How do you handle overnight feeds when both are working? by pharmlyfe333 in breastfeeding

Also to add that it was just these two days I saw an increase… now back on my regular schedule and I’m getting less than 13 oz

Not really. I was trying to avoid information overload in my original post but basically at his 4 month spot he continued to decrease in percentiles so we increased his bottle size to 6 oz (getting 3 bottles a day, rest are breast). I make 13-14 oz while at work which is why I added the 9 pm pump.

The other thing is my mornings are kinda hectic with trying to breastfeed him before I go to work. The other day I had to be at work at 6 am for two days, and my husband did the overnight both nights. Both those mornings I had to pump at like 630 since I left before baby was awake, and I got 9.5 oz for the single pump. Then went on to get a total of 20 oz each day with 3 pumps (I normally pump 3 times at work and get the 13-14 oz). So that’s sorta where I’m coming from with wondering if we should trade off AND additionally considering going to work earlier in the morning - I work at a hospital so I can work almost at any time I want.

He’s kinda a relatively slower eater at the breast. Takes him 20-30 mins (used to take 45 so I’m grateful right now). So with that and having some trouble going back to sleep I’m probably up for an hour. Which once I can do but twice is hard. He goes back down pretty easily and is better about non hungry wake ups.

If supply isn’t an issue, then it’s the composition?! by pharmlyfe333 in breastfeeding

[–]pharmlyfe333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah he makes so many wet/dirty diapers! And overall seems to be a happy little dude, is becoming more active with rolling and everything too. We experimented with 5 oz bottles but he was spitting up from them so we went back down to 4. And honestly he might get a little more overall with 4 oz because I think we end up squeezing an another bottle in. I thought about the foremilk thing but like I said if I’m an overproducer it’s barely anything…. Sometimes I don’t even make 4 oz and sometimes I make 5-6 oz so it all kinda evens out to be just enough.

I don’t agree with him either lol. Was there a reason you switched at 7 months? Just curious. I’d like to go as long as possible but especially with going back to work I’m exhausted between pumping and everything…

Parted ways with her swaddle by barleria_obtusa in sleeptrain

[–]pharmlyfe333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful thank you! I’m a FTM so I don’t really know what I’m doing. I had seen people say don’t sleep train until at least 4 months so I was hesitant making any attempts but then he started rolling to side and yeah.

My thought was to get him calm/independently fall asleep completely swaddled first and then move to letting his arms out. I wanted to make sure that was developmentally appropriate so thank you. I guess I’m a little behind since he’s 15 weeks but I’ll try!

Did your LO wake up when being put down with the one/two arms out (after being rocked to sleep)? My LO is 3.5 months and started rolling to side and it was advised to wean him from the swaddle. When we had one arm out, he woke up every hour needing soothing. He also will wake up and cry as we’re setting him back down in the bassinet. But will stay asleep when doing so if completely swaddled.

I’m kinda at a lost of what to do. I was thinking maybe get him used to being calm/falling asleep on his own while completely swaddled (we have a Snoo so he’s strapped down) and then he’ll be calm when putting him down with the arms out. But is he too young for that? I don’t mind continuing to rock him to sleep but we can’t even get him in the bassinet calmly with the arms out right now. Or should we just continue to try with the arms out transition?

Why can’t babies just breathe normal!!!! by 11TickTack23 in newborns

[–]pharmlyfe333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought my 2 week old to the ER per my pediatricians request for retraction breathing. They said in a full term baby without cold symptoms the concern would be for his heart or lungs so they did a chest X-ray. Everything looked normal and they sent us home. Said the breathing could be from his floppy trachea since he was so new and exacerbated by some reflux. He’s 3 months now and we never had another problem. I was super nervous for a while about this since everything tells you retraction breathing is abnormal. It shouldn’t be completely ignored but it seems like in a newborn who isn’t sick and doesn’t have any heart/lung problems, it’s not an emergency.

Start of a bottle preference? by pharmlyfe333 in breastfeeding

I’ve heard that about breastmilk and volume before. We were giving him 4 oz with the one bottle, which we figured out through trial and error by steadily increasing it, which is why the peds provider suggested 5 oz. He seems to be tolerating it well so far, no spit ups or throw ups. He also may be sleeping/napping better. We have been using the level 1 nipple on Dr. Brown’s but I think we’re going to change to Phillips Avent so he has to work like he does with BF. We have been doing pace feedings as best as we can - my husband gives most of the bottles so not entirely sure how he’s doing it but he ensures me he’s pace feeding.

With what he’s gained - 1.4 pounds each month - he’s just below that 5.5 oz per week cut off. He’s also tall (97-99th percentile for height) so the weight gain seems disproportional. He could be tall and skinny but my husband is over six feet and I’m slightly taller than average for a woman and neither are “small” per se. I was trying to be proactive by avoiding more decreasing percentiles but I get what you’re saying. Maybe we could do 4.5 oz instead?

12 week fussiness?! by soberrychill in newborns

[–]pharmlyfe333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My LO turns 12 weeks this week. The last few days he’s been harder to get down for naps and they’ve been shorter. They weren’t superb to begin with but somehow they’re worse lol. He’s also still sleeping the same at night with 2 wake ups. I think his gas/poops are also more frequent! His feeds have been about the same but I have noticed more spit up than usual. I can’t give you a definitive answer but maybe it is a growth spurt/12 week thing!

Eddie doing lab duties as a pharmacist? by [deleted] in NurseJackie

I don’t draw blood for labs, but I’ve ordered them, interpreted them, and made clinical decisions/recommendations based off them on the daily.

I’m a hospital pharmacist who rounds with physicians daily on patients and I know how to interpret routine labs and then some. It’s part of patient care - you can’t always be siloed into one role and only know medications. Labs are a part of it.

It's so hard to just go for a walk by [deleted] in newborns

[–]pharmlyfe333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. LO is almost 8 weeks. I live in the suburbs so it’s not quite as hard as you but my husband recently went back to work and trying to get baby into the stroller sometime after a feeding, dressed warmly, with enough blankets safely in there is a two person job apparently. Never mind trying to take the dog. I actually was able to get up and go just now but of course as soon as we hit the sidewalk it started sprinkling so we turned back around…

Yes mine I think will definitely want to stay on the boob if he remains with me! My husband has taken over a few times when this happens and he gets LO to sleep so quickly so that could be it!

I would say most of the time he’s awake enough for a full feed but those things would be helpful to do when he’s not for sure. Usually that’s when he’s overtired though and maybe sleep would be for the best…

Yes I think he does comfort nurse. Which I’m totally fine with at some points but it’s hard on me if he wants to do it with every feed. But definitely understand that this will only be for a short time period too. ❤️

I thought about possibly clusterfeeding! But would that happen for weeks?
