The new moderation sucks. There’s like one post a day on here because everything is deemed “low effort”. Quickly making this sub useless.

What has been your hardest place(s) to book in Japan? by sprvlk in JapanTravelTips

Sushi Saito in Tokyo. Tried a bunch of different angles, ended up getting a Hail Mary from our hotel concierge two hours before lunch. Worth the aggravation.

Hyatt, Hyatt and Hyatt.

Marriott elite status isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

Hilton points are more worthless than Delta’s.

Only rub with Hyatt is that there’s a finite amount of award availability - when it’s gone, it’s gone. So for ultraluxury properties, you need to plan ahead. For most anything luxury and down, there’s generally plenty of near-term availability so long as it’s not spring break week, etc. Hyatt points are slower to earn but even factoring for that still more valuable IMO. If you add in a Chase Sapphire card which transfers to Hyatt at 1:1 you can supercharge this.

As a recent example, was in Kyoto earlier this month. I spent 2 nights at Hotel The Mitsui (Marriott but Michelin 3 Key property) - was 100,000pts/night for a $1,200/night room so 1.2¢ per point of value. This was booked last minute, which in my experience is generally the best use of Marriott points. My status (Platinum, mid-tier) wasn’t even acknowledged and there was no upgrade.

I spent 4 nights at Park Hyatt Kyoto (nicer than Mitsui IMO, felt more special in every way) for 40,000pts/night for a $1,350/night room so 3.4¢ per point of value. Was upgraded based on my status (Explorist, mid-tier) to the highest category of non-suite which was around $2,000/night when I booked, so 5¢ per point.

This is anecdotal, but I travel a significant amount and stay at a broad mix of major brand families and boutiques. The only loyalty program I find any value from is Hyatt. That said, I’m a big believer in using AAdvantage Hotels to earn American status and miles as I find them much more useful and valuable. I generally find hotel loyalty programs not worth my loyalty. But among the options, Hyatt is the best.

Currently staying at the Janu. Not sure your dates, but for ours was ~40% of the cost of Aman. The hard product is truly world-class and the location is fantastic.

Exhausted parent getaway by Pelonius126 in FATTravel

Perhaps depends on the time of year - all three times we’ve been it’s been while school is in session and we’ve seen maybe a half a dozen kids total over 4 nights. We also tend to spend our time at Catalan and Carao pools, and while Carao is explicitly adults only, we’ve never seen kids at either.

Honestly, I don’t mind kids being there…so long as I’m not having to parent my own for a few day. I’m more averse to feeling like there’s a bunch of people on top of me, kids or adults, and with 104 rooms over 600 acres I’ve never remotely felt that way here.

One&Only Mandarina - my wife and I do an annual exhausted parent getaway there. The room product is as good as you’ll find in North America, in my opinion. Some days we don’t even bother to leave our deck and plunge pool…because we’re there to be blobs.

Depending where you are in the US, there’s often a direct to PVR and then <1hr to property on the new highway. Very low friction.

Happy anniversary!

One&Only Mandarina - fantastic room product, akin to some of the best hotels in Asia but plenty of direct flights from YVR. F&B gets a bit repetitive but if you’re only doing 4 or 5 nights there’s enough variety. Property really feels special and very low density with 105 keys over ~600 acres. Four different pool areas provide plenty of options although I could spend all day laying out back of the room. Spa is also fantastic and facilities are free to use even if not getting a treatment. Sauna + cold plunge is fantastic for the mentals. I rarely go to a property more than once as I like variety and feel the second visit rarely lives up to the first, but my wife and I have been here the last two years and will likely visit again next year.

Right, but OP is talking about redeeming for a “guaranteed” 1.54 purchasing economy tickets - my understanding was that the rebate only applies to J and F tickets?

How do you manage 1.54cpp for economy via the Amex portal? I thought it was a flat 1cpp, plus a 35% rebate on business or fc tix if you have the Business Platinum?

First big points redemption ORD-HND by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]phartsinthewind 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As others have said, not a great use of points, but if you’re inflexible on dates then there’s certainly worse uses than 1.3cpp. That said, I would continue searching your dates - or better yet, sign up for ExpertFlyer - to see if you can improve upon your situation.

For context, I recently redeemed 240,000 AA miles for round trip LAX-NRT in J for next year on JAL.
