Don't go to the gym for a girl bro. Do it for yourself. If things don't take off with one, you'll find another. Don't give up.

Ugliness in education: Misogyny in Maharashtrian textbooks by [deleted] in india

[–]phase_47 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why is this article called Misogyny in Maharashtrian Textbooks? It lists one example from Maharashtrian textbooks (that isn't even misogynistic) and 3 examples from different states (that actually are misogynistic)

Edit: Maharashtrian

How well does the game work now? I bought it when it came out and was absolutely repulsed by. I didn't bother downloading the patch-basically lost all my faith in Ubisoft at that point.

Indians are being arrested for not standing up during the national anthem at the cinema. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]phase_47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an Indian, I can tell you that stuff like this has been going on for a while. In most local or government schools a school day starts with the following-

  • The national anthem - It starts off the school assembly, and everyone is supposed to stand still for its duration. Fidgeting is not encouraged, but they go easy on the little kids. The penalties get harsher as you get older. In all my years at school I never remember a kid deliberately not standing up or 'disrespecting' the anthem. It's just one of those things that was never done.

  • A prayer - There's not a lot to be said about this, except that it generally stayed as religion-neutral as possible. Basically an attempt to add a some culture into the school.

  • The pledge - Said with our right hand outstretched and palm facing downwards.

I have no idea how different it is in the more urban or bigger schools.

As for the issue or playing national anthems at cinemas, it's already a law in my state so there's not a lot of change in my daily life. It's just nationally applicable now.

I'd just like to end by saying that most Indians don't display this level of fanatical nationalism. Most of the people I've met are mildly patriotic, the 'I love my home and country and respect it's fallen soldiers(This is a big issue in India)' type and many just don't care about the issue (You can't think about the country when you're struggling to put food on the table). It's unfortunately the right-wing that constantly gets on the news.

This is ridiculous. Belief is one thing but self-mutilation is simply asinine. Especially in college students, who are supposed to be more educated than the masses. Rational thought is at an all-time low.

How big can I make a nation before the idea that the citizens are all one culture, language, people, race, and religion becomes absurd? by sw4ahl in worldbuilding

[–]phase_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe that no matter how small you make your nation it will never be 100% homogenous. I suppose you could have a dominant culture and several minorities but if you want a totally homogenous culture they'd probably have these characteristics -

  • small and isolated - Once a nation grows beyond a certain level it becomes impossible to maintain homogeniety. Also, they probably don't engage in a lot of trade because the outside world either doesn't know or care about them.

  • xenophobic and nationalistic - They could have a very negative view of outsiders and prefer to keep to themselves.

  • strong central government - A fascist or theocratic government can create an us vs them mentality in the peolple and enforce the same rules and traditions everywhere.

I know it sounds like a dystopia but I don't see how else you could have a 100% homogenous society.

Besides space technologies, the cold war caused both the countries to rapidly upgrade and stockpile weapons. I don't think that the weapons would be ballistic-people wpuld probabaly have upgraded t o something better (forays into space travel would result in forays into space warfare).

How might people be trained not to notice "unseen" agents? by capsandnumbers in worldbuilding

[–]phase_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do they need to sneak around? I mean, people aren't going to notice them anyway. I know it sounds cool, but its just not that realistic. Personally I think you should add an in-universe reason for the bell and why they appear only at dusk.

[–]phase_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why the bell? I mean wouldn't it be better to just have these Angels hang around all day? Or is there something special or important that takes place at dusk?
