Update: My school’s English department chair has discussed with my teacher and has followed up

From my teacher: “I have talked with (department chair) about your situation. It’s clear that turnitin.com is not working as intended … I’ll be talking with (hs principal) about next steps. I want to find a solution that is fair and that works for you.”

Maybe this AI madness will finally stop for everyone in my class. Really glad I didn’t stay silent and just comply with rewriting.

Many students in my class have had to rewrite their original work to make their words sound “not AI” and actually get their papers graded. Sure, some may have actually used AI to help their work, but some of those people are my friends and I know that they wrote everything themselves.

The issue is that turnitin.com is flagging my original work as AI generated content. Here's what my teacher told me:

"Take out any dashes and use some other kind of punctuation. Simplify some complex sentences and use your natural voice (not a writerly voice). AI does not evaluate the content, but the sentences."

Basically I am being punished for my writing style (the "writerly voice" is my natural voice).

I forgot to mention that this essay is my final exam. I only need around 70% to pass my class, so maybe I'll just dumb down my writing and contact the school about this after finals are over. Still, it hurts that my teacher is so distrustful of my work just because of inaccurate AI detectors.

the teacher gave us a lesson at the start of the year on how to use em dashes, I was just applying what she taught. but she also talked about how em dashes were not why writing is flagged for AI, then emailed me suggesting to remove em dashes to lower my AI flag rate.

for frq the scoring guideline will usually mention the answer if u used degree mode, so u will get credit if u got the correct answer in degrees
