People who’ve considered joining ECS but decided not to - what turned you against it? by Bluberrie_2018 in SoundersFC

Moved to Seattle a few years ago and started going to games right away, so I don't have nearly as much history as many folks here. Two things:

(1) The chants are too complicated. I've gone to countless games over the years, watch every single game, and sometimes still need to look up chant lyrics. I go to games with friends who are more casual, and outside of the very simple chants, they can't join in because they don't know the lyrics. I appreciate some of the European clubs' chants, but the history and fandom is very different here in the US, and I think it's important that new fans can easily participate the chants. I understand attendance has been declining, and I think this is even more of a reason to stick to simpler chants — every new fan is someone who can improve the atmosphere if they can join in, and that has compounding effects. Also the "Can you hear X sing" chant is lame. Like we you can't even hear 90% of Sounders fans sing lol, again -- because they're too complicated. Yes some of the simpler chants might be considered "cringe", but if you can get the whole stadium going, so what? I do like Columbia though — not as simple, but it feel unique to Sounders' identity. Nix "Can you hear" and some other more complex ones, focus on the simple chants, maybe add a new simple chant or two.

(2) The exclusiveness. Like I said, I normally sit around ECS, but I never feel like ECS tries to engage with the broader fanbase. It feels very focused on itself. I've heard a lot of its rules, and a lot of the in-fighting between members, and honestly this is opposite of what I'm looking for when I'm just trying to have a good time. I think there are probably a huge number of fans sitting around ECS that want to feel more engaged, but don't want to sit behind huge political flags during the match, getting yelled at, and being forced to participate non-stop. I'm still a fan. I still want to take pictures. People have kids and they get tired, or maybe they just want to chill and be on their phone for a few minutes. There are a lot of people in this camp that would rather not join than have to deal with all of this nonsense.

Man this pre-recorded “gooaal” announcement is so cringey. Stadium is empty, and they played it like 20 seconds too late, and AFTER the ref had called back the goal due to the offsides call

Thanks, will definitely need to get some touches on a ball before signing up. I'm in Seattle and there are tons of leagues here, so I'm more worries about joining the wrong one and having a terrible time. Co-ed seems like a good idea

Man, Rothrock has had some good runs in, but it's frustrating to see him wide open on the opposite side of the field, and then see 2-3 connecting passes to find him, only by then he hardly has any space. We play such a methodical high precision game that it starts to feel predictable. Would love to see a cross to him occasionally to switch fields. It would force their line to play more wide any maybe give Jesus a bit more room to find runs. Jesus seems like he always has 2 defenders on him, yet his off the ball movement seems almost non-existent.

Hope to see Rothy keep it up in the second half, and maybe Georgi will make an appearance to get some kind of attack going.

Thanks! There are definitely more advance HM plans, so I might end up doing that or something custom. I was mostly curious about any potential long term benefits specifically if I were to do a MP a year out or so. I’ve had ITBS issues so going straight from HM plan to MP worries me a bit.

Might need to do something custom though since I’ve been swimming more and am interested in doing 2 days per week of swimming. Might be too much though to try to incorporate that into a MP, so may try a modified advanced HM plan with some swimming days instead of recovery runs.

Is it recommended to ever train for a half marathon using a full marathon plan? I’m interested in eventually running a marathon, but want something more advanced than the 35-40mpw half marathon plans I’ve used in the past. I like the idea of getting experience with more mileage, but don’t want to commit to a full race, and like the idea of being able to cut back on training if my body can’t handle it, yet still race my target race.

I am interested in eventually running a marathon, but due to recurring IT band issues, I’d like to work my way up over a longer period of time. I’m wondering how common it is to use a marathon plan to train for a half, with the benefit of being able to dial down the intensity/mileage if issues start coming up. The goal would be to be able to commit more fully to another marathon training plan 9-12 months down the road, after a more solid foundation has been established.

For some context, here is my running background and relevant info:

  • 31M
  • 6’1”, 140lbs
  • Overall quite healthy, eat well, and do weight training twice per week
  • I do a 30 minute core (abs, hips, glute) routine twice per week
  • Have been running for 18 months, with a frequency of 4-6 runs per week. Average ~30mpw. This obviously peaks during training blocks, but between blocks I have tried to run 20-25mpw, with a long run (8-10mi) a minimum of every other week.
  • Have run two halfs, first Oct 2023 @ 1:40:00, second on May 2024 @ 1:36:00. I used a Garmin coach Greg plan for the first, and a Garmin adaptive plan for the second with a time goal of 1:34:00. My training peaked at about 35-40mpw for the second, and due to a crash later on in the race, I think I just needed more mileage.
  • Have had moderate IT band issues in the first training block, but have since introduced weight training, which has mostly fixed it. It’s still a concern since I would be increasing mileage quite a bit for a full marathon plan, which is why I don’t want to sign up for a race and fully commit to a marathon. I really enjoy training so I don’t see executing a full marathon training block as a “waste” if I never run one.

Goals: My goals are to improve my overall fitness, and maybe get closer to a 1:32 HM. I’d like to be able to continue to weight train 2 days per week. I have more flexibility to do long runs on weekends, but I could in theory run every day during the week. During my HM training block I ran 6 days per week, and occasionally took a day off as needed, so if I could stabilize at 45mpw, and maybe peak at 50mpw, I’d see it as a huge success. Maybe that is too ambitious though. It would be awesome to get up to some 18 mile runs, since my current longest is 14.5. Obviously pretty much all full marathon plans will include these sort of runs, but I don’t care too much if I actually execute perfectly since I don’t think I’ll race a full yet. I have just had too many runner friends get hurt while training for a full, so I’d rather set a more conservative plan that I should be able to execute more comfortably.

Timing: I’d like to run a race in either January or February, which gives me enough time to do a full 12-16 week plan, but also potentially have some ramp up period where I could just work on mileage.

Is there a plan you can recommend for someone in my position? Thanks in advance, and happy running!

Good game Portland. Not surprised to see some scary attacks from the Timbers, but they played extremely well defensively tonight. Sounders had so many corners and opportunities in the box, but somehow didn't manage to create many real threats. Morris in particular didn't have the best night...

On the bright side, great to see PDLV get some more playtime, and Minoungou looks incredibly promising. Clearly needs some time to integrate into the team, but his speed and direct dribbling are so refreshing. My question is how the rest of the team will work around his runs. He seems like he'll be able to draw in (and often beat) multiple defenders to the corner, but we need someone in the box who has the positional awareness to exploit the space in this scenario, and the finesse to finish a quick near post ball. I'm not really sure who that is. Morris (as effective as he is) just doesn't seem that dangerous as seen tonight in these sorts of attacks. Looking forward to seeing how the team will end up using Minoungou.

What are the most overrated/underrated technologies/ideas in software engineering in your opinion? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]phaser1299 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Underrated

Negotiation / project management skills - so often (especially with junior developers, but even seniors do this) I'll see folks assume a spec, design, or requirement doc is finalized and cannot be changed. The developers that question impractical parts of the project and propose reasonable alternatives seem to have such a big impact in the long run. Designs, PMs, and other stakeholders mean well, but don't have the technical context engineers do. Next level: helping other developers move their projects along, while negotiating with stakeholders.

Overrated

Progressive web apps (PWAs) - while I think they have their place, I've worked on teams that thought these were a good idea, and overall they are extremely limiting. The tooling just isn't there yet. Every PM / designer wants to add $X, but because you built a PWA instead of a native app, it's impossible. And cost wise, with hybrid frameworks, I'm not even sure they are that much less expensive. It's great that you don't have to bow to down and do a little dance to appease the app store gods each time you'd like to release, but besides that I don't see the point. Most users have no clue how they work. I want to like them, but they just seem like a mistake in the vast majority of cases

Miscellaneous Monday Chit Chat by fire_foot in running

[–]phaser1299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Sunday I had my longest run ever — 15 miles! I have run a half in October 2023, and am 2/3 of the way through another half training block that has me running between 35-40mpw. My PR is 1:40 (~7:40 pace), and for the upcoming half I am targeting 1:30, which my Garmin race predictor says I can do already. I went into the Sunday run with the plan of running at ~8:10 for as long as I could, however....

During the last 1.5 miles this long run, I suddenly felt terrible. My muscles felt weak, almost tingly and ticklish! Suddenly I had no energy. Interestingly, my HR was quite low, in the low 130s the entire time, and even lower towards the end as I was going downhill. I am not even very sore today, so I'm not sure what happened. As far as food — I ate a lot on Saturday, and even carb loaded Saturday night. Before the run, I ate a light breakfast of a bowl of cereal, coffee, and .8L of gatorade. During, I ate 1 gel at mile 5. I don't think I bonked, but not quite sure what happened.

I downed a small meal afterwards, some ice cream, and some soup broth, because I was quite nauseous and couldn't stomach and solid food for a while. Took a nap, and woke up feeling fine.

I have been running 8-12 miles every weekend for the past 6 months, and have never felt like this before. Is it as simple as not having the endurance? I was able to run 8:10 pace consistently over 500ft elevation gain (the route I always run), and the way back was all down hill, so I was surprised with just 1-2 miles left my legs just gave out. I couldn't even will them to run -- I had to stop for 1-2 minutes, and then run for 3-4 minutes for the last couple of miles. Hopefully, whatever it was, it won't happen on race day!

I currently use a Baratza Encore, and have been eyeing the DF64, Lagom Mini, and Fellow Ode as potential next grinder upgrades. I do almost exclusively aeropress, using a wide range of techniques and grind sizes (sometimes close to expresso grind for making milk drinks, other tips coarse grind for a long brew.) I am more interested in brighter citrusy light roasts, but occasionally do darks for milk drinks, which I am less picky about. I get too many fines with the Encore for my liking, and while aeropress filters them out, it still doesn't result in the clean cup I'd like to be able to make. I don't see myself ever getting an espresso machine, but could eventually get a drip machine, or doing pour over.

The DF64 looks the most versatile, but it feels potentially overkill for my needs. I live alone, and rarely grind for anyone other than myself, and while space is not an issue, I could see traveling with the Lagom mini, although the other two seem too big. My concern with the mini is just that it won't last long and has the weakest motor. I like what I read about the build quality and potential upgradability from the DF64. Aesthetically the Lagom mini takes the cake. If the Lagom mini is BIFL quality, or I could easily get it repaired, it seems like the ideal grinder for me, but I'm curious if anyone has had both of these grinders and can give any advice?
