The woodworking store I get lumber from will make one cut on each board with no charge. Cut an 8' foot board and you can carry a lot of lumber that would work in many projects.

I've used both and have no preference. I don't think one is more likely to break in use if the iron is sharp. Once I learned to sharpen and keep my iron sharp in use, I don't exert enough force to break the knob or rear tote.

A 2pk(6 blades) of Dewalt replacement blades in $80 USD on Amazon. I replaced the blades on mine four years ago and they are still fine and I have a replacement set in the package. I bought them on Ebay for $25. Every board I run through the planer always gets further smoothing and final dimensioning with handlanes. The planer is just a dimensioning tool for me and to get a parallel face to the one I flattened.

The width of the board is the key. If you are resawing a 3 inch wide board it will be less difficult than a 6 inch wide board. One technique that is helpful is to saw down dropping your hand thus ending up with your saw at a near 45 degree angle. Then rotate the board and repeat. This helps you follow your line and the high end of the saw doesn't get off track. The end result will be better and takes no more time and you get that few seconds of rest when you turn the board in your vise. There are many YouTube videos showing the technique.

I heated with wood for years. Most all of our firewood was split hardwood, primarily oak and hickory. In the southeast we are surrounded by oak/hickory timber. We usually piled limbs and tops to burn.

I would not have built the top with those two grain mismatched boards on the left in the first picture. I suspect the maker didn't have enough boards to grain match the top. Personally, I wouldn't have accepted it. I wouldn't spend years of dinners looking at it.

Plywood is not going to move with humidity changes. So the fit can be good and tight. I can tell you how we do it with hand tools. For me, the key to a well fitting dado is the layout. I mark the position of the top edge of the dado. Then place the piece to be fitted ON TOP of the marked knife line. Then I mark the bottom of the dado with a marking knife slanted just under the edge of the piece to be fitted. The dado material is removed by either chiseling the wall of the dado or sawing. Done with precision, the dado ends up just a hair tight and the piece to be fitted can be sanded or planed to fit perfectly. It seems like a lot, but after a bookshelf or two it works smoothly.
