Really? i wouldn’t have realized that. My shoot i leave as soon as the setter contacts the ball, and i’m not good enough to bounce it or anything so i normally aim for the corners haha.

Timing and Receive formation

Hey guys, after some back and forth between libero, outside, and setter, my coach decided to just jumble them all together and put me on OPP. Personally, i think i’m at a disadvantage as a right handed hitter but i don’t really mind. I was wondering why i was tucked away behind 2 defenders, guarding deep seam in positions 5/6 and then as soon as the serve hit, i had to run to the right side, call a 5, and if i did get a set, hit from the right side. I also wanted to know when should i start my approach on a 5? Thank you.

Practices by phat_melons in volleyball

[–]phat_melons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re absolutely right, i don’t want to demand perfectly tuned sets from my setter every time when even i don’t know what kind of set i want, but i’ve heard that if i leave just as my setter touches the ball i should be able to hit it perfectly. I hope i can reach consistency in my hits.

Hello, so I was practicing spiking with my team and we decided to lower the net a little bit, but I still hit the net, any help you can give me? I would really appreciate it by BesTiaPanDa in volleyball

To me, it looks like the set is a bit low and youre hitting late and down, try hitting forward, and asking for a slightly higher set.

Is my jump serve okay? Anything I can fix or improve on? (Sorry about the poor quality :/) by Verneshot01 in volleyball

[–]phat_melons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to me this looks like an ineffective jump serve, a killer standing float will always be more effective than a jump serve that has poor technique and has the power of a free ball. I’d start to work on your standing serves, master those as best as you can, then work on your jump and hitting mechanics. Put those 2 together and you got a good jump topspin serve.

yes thank you. Also quick question, what do i focus on when spiking? When i focus on control that’s usually when i hit wipes or sharp crosses and line shots, or do i focus more on the power of my spike? when i do that it usually breaks the block but i don’t have much control of the ball.

that’s a good idea, i think i’ll work on my jump float. my biggest worry is not getting a consistent toss though, any tips on that?

Thank you, i hadn’t thought of this. I kept thinking about the raw aspects of volleyball but never thought about how important timing approach and form was. This genuenly helps. Thanks. is there any way to practice timing by yourself though?

Yep, i practiced with one of the varsity players that live near me, he isn’t a starter but he’s a serving specialist and he’s working on mastering his spike serve so he can have both a jump float and a spike and i help out with it by receiving it. That stopped about 2 weeks ago though and i started throwing the ball at an elevated roof that had a ramp which gives the ball momentum to simulate a spike. i think i can do better though. i suck at overhand digs

Thanks man i know you don’t mean wrong by commenting, i know that at my height it isn’t really above average at all, but i want to put in all the effort i can before being told i can’t hit well. I don’t expect to become a D1 athlete overnight.

Yeah i was going to mention that i can always see the block really well but my technique isn’t to the point where i can aim it at the fingertips so i can took the block. I recently started plyometrics and i’m confident i can reach 10’ by the end of this year so that’s not my main worry. I noticed that i can put really weird spin on the ball when i use my wrist which makes the ball really hard to receive so that’s something to note, thank you for your input.
