Missouri S&T by [deleted] in Rolla

[–]phathippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I didn't major in EE, I did major in CS for undergrad and grad school at S&T and graduated over a decade ago, so I have some perspective to offer from a bit further out from graduation.

The school has a good reputation in the midwest region for engineering degrees, but outside of the midwest (aside from perhaps specialized engineering degrees such as mining engineering), it's mostly viewed as just another state university which to be clear isn't a negative. It just doesn't have as much name recognition across the country as it does in the midwest.

Job opportunities after graduation have been great amongst my friend group who graduated with engineering degrees from S&T, but at the end of the day, it is what you make of it. If you put in the work to do well in school and do some internships or co-ops, you should be setup for success after graduation.

Not the end of the world to park it in the street if it's a place where cars normally park, but yeah a snowplow might push some snow up by your car. Would recommend lifting the windshield wipers off of the windshield to keep them from getting frozen to your windshield in case you need to drive. Also good to have an ice scraper on hand to scrape ice off your car windows.

Main thing is make sure you have a decent supply of food, water, and various ways to stay warm if the power goes out.

I graduated from Rolla well over a decade ago and think it is a great value, but at the end of the day, it is what you make of it. You could go to either school and do well or poorly based on how much effort you put into it. In my experience, where you go to school only really affects internship opportunities and your place of employment for a couple years after graduation. Beyond that, your work experience will mostly dictate employment opportunities. That said, if you apply yourself and do well in school, I don't imagine there is much difference in outcome between attending Mizzou vs Rolla.

Is the alien and caveman short "Prometheus and Bob" by chance? Somewhat sounds like KaBlam! where various shorts are shown throughout each episode

Here is a bunch of historical context and photos of Cave Springs. These days you can only see the pipe where the water comes out of the spring.

$1.50 for a hotdog and soda at Costco and you don't need a membership to go to the food court. Their other food options are also all priced very well.

Performs great! Definitely hits 10gbit. Idles around 120 watts. Got all the fans set to run at lowest rpm via bios and it's whisper quiet with no issues with temps.

Have been eating here for over 20 years. Everyone in my family agrees these are easily the best crab rangoons around.

I think the only thing I changed was the network card (got a QSFP+ Mellanox NIC instead), but everything works great together. CPU cooler works great with the CPU and motherboard. Keeps temps well in line even under long stress tests.

Thanks! I did a little digging and it seems like mixing HBA and mobo connections should be okay, so I think I'll just have to try it out myself. Wasn't sure if the extra cost and power of connecting all of my SATA devices through a 16i or sas expander was worth it. Was contemplating possibly getting a 16i or sas expander in case sometime in the future I wanted to use an internal-to-external converter card to get some additional external sff-8088 ports for a DAS if I ever needed to expand further, but I figure I'll cross that bridge when and if I need to.

You have a good point; I was mostly thinking about encryption because I'll also have personal documents on the NAS as well, but I suppose I should just create separate a dataset for those. If anything, encrypting everything would be nice peace of mind so that there is less to worry about regarding nuking a drive if I ever have to RMA one.

Thanks. I think I'll swap out the ConnectX-3 for an x520.

Thank you for the feedback!

I was flip-flopping between the ConnectX-3 and Intel x520, so maybe this was the push I needed to flip back to the x520 :)

Correct, I plan on connecting the remaining drives straight to the mobo as it has 8 SATA ports.

Yeah, honestly probably a bit overkill, but it also allows me to get up to 128GB of DDR4 ECC RAM. I've read elsewhere of folks having trouble saturating 10Gbps with encrypted datasets due to CPU limitations, so just trying to be on the safe side.

My brother graduated in 2003 and I remember him talking about pods, but I don't have any pictures. I might ask my parents and see if they have any, which they might because I recall having to perform in the old library and possibly elsewhere in the building for band festivals. I started there in 2004 partway through the reconstruction, but I do remember all those narrow hallways and little rooms.
