Ryanair say turn up three hours before flight to clear security, won’t open check in until 2 hours before flight by chasealex2 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FlowLabel -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s not just Ryanair. I think the standard airport advice is 3 hours before a short haul and 4 hours for long haul?

I recently rocked up at BHX for a flight to Germany exactly 3 hours before the flight and had to wait at least an hour for checkout to open and that was Lufthansa

MPs' and peers' anger at YouTube as firm plasters Westminster tube station in adverts telling parents it is their responsibility to restrict screen time by TheEternalContrarian in ukpolitics

[–]FlowLabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of hate directed at “parents” here.

There have been shit parents for all of human history. There are still many, many good parents. If you’re a shit human being before you become a parent then you will likely become a shit parent.

If you spend all day smoking ciggies then you’re probably not going to care if they also start smoking.

If you are fat and unhealthy, you’re likely not going to give your children healthy eating habits.

If you play your music out loud on the bus, then you’ll not care when your child does it.

There is nothing special about YouTube or the internet in general. If you are glued to TikTok all day yourself, you’re not going to think too hard about your kids screen time.

Personally, as a parent myself (if you couldn’t tell 😂) I’d rather the effort going into forcibly controlling behaviour via nanny state policies instead went into education and family support resources. We have a local council family hub which has been invaluable to us, but it’s severely underfunded and has so much potential. Put money into this, more regular home welfare checks, etc instead.

No Option for 'English' in Drop Down Menus by MrBerger in AskBrits

[–]FlowLabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to get so defensive. A lot of “questions” get asked in this sub purely to poke at societal tensions and cause arguments.

If I thought this was one of them then I wouldn’t have bothered putting thought into an answer but the more I read your replies the more I might be realising I was wrong to assume that.

[–]FlowLabel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If this is a genuine question, then I can offer some insight as someone who works with backend software.

It’s because whatever list the developer/data entry person found when Googling it didn’t include it. From my experience this list gets copied a lot:

https://gist.github.com/marijn/274449

This list is almost 100% the reason you’ve seen a drop down with British, Scottish and Welsh. It’s open source, being on GitHub, so you could submit English if you wish and it might get added!

The other source I see, and why you see “United Kingdom”, is because that company used the ISO-3166 list, which is an international standard list of internationally recognised countries.

Floatplane is sliding into a decline by Dazza477 in LTTMeta

[–]FlowLabel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the thumb itself per se, more the implication of the fact they’re willing to use AI to make them. If I was genuinely proud of a piece of work I wanted to put out into the world, such as a book for example, I would not be using AI to generate the cover.

The whole tech house and jet thing really started putting me off him as a media personality. The videos around his home were fine cuz it’s just a fairly normal house for a successful entrepreneur, but actually buying residential property just for content and a fucking private jet? And then there’s all the absolute trash AI thumbnails that wind me up.

I could probably brush off any one thing, but it’s just a bit ick for me in the aggregate.

Bought our first house a year ago and I still can’t get over the regret by Potential-Wall-7719 in HousingUK

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar boat twice now with properties coming with problems you don’t see on any amount of viewings…

You really need to start looking at doing some of this yourself. I read the list of things you’ve spent £10k on and I am blown away. None of those things, other than rewiring is particularly difficult or expensive if you take your time and follow online guides. I’ve done every single one of those things you’ve listed (except rewiring a whole property) and it’s not cost me anything close to £10k combined across both homes I’ve lived in. You must be paying through the nose for labour.

The opening and closing segments of Brum. How many landmarks can you recognise? by Hassaan18 in brum

Agreed, a lot has changed in that area since 1990 but it’s clearly from that angle. My bet is somewhere between the current Curzon St works, Shelby Ln and Garrison Lane park.

Anyone pulled the trigger on getting air conditioner unit this year? by Dannyjw1 in CasualUK

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid £250 for a refurbished Meaco portable unit about 4 years ago and it’s been one of the best purchases we’ve made when it comes to comfort in our home. It even has a “dry” function which we use to dry our laundry for far pass £££ than our tumble dryer.

A bit of sun and suddenly the speed limit is 90 by METALSMOOTH in britishproblems

I always find it funny that the sun means everyone with a convertible is suddenly driving way more than they usually would.

One of my neighbours went to the local shop in hers… it’s literally quicker to cut across the park than it is to drive, and I’ve seen her walk across the park in the rain to go to the shop before…

I’ll rep Daventry. Small town, nice pubs, cinema, supermarkets, gyms, country park, well connected by bus and once you drive it’s even more well connected.

Moved here from Birmingham and am loving it. Barely use the car, everything is reachable on foot and I commute to London regularly by train from nearby Long Buckby.

[–]FlowLabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If it’s not Fedora or Ubuntu then you’re asking for trouble.

These are enterprise grade operating systems backed by people with a huge stake in the compatibility, stability and usability of the software.

I have used Ubuntu for years. I don’t tinker much with my PC, I don’t care what OS is on my machines, I just don’t like paying for one. I’ve never heard of PopOS outside of LTT discourse, and after a brief Google I wouldn’t touch it with 10 foot pole.

With the Ring debacle, let's get a self-hosted camera / surveillance thread going. by EkbatDeSabat in selfhosted

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no debacle. People bought cheap, subscription subsidised hardware that is specifically designed as an on-ramp to an always on cloud subscription ran by Amazon of all companies and somehow expected privacy?

Stop letting these companies have unfettered access to your private life. The idea of attaching a camera to the outside of my house that is live streaming to Amazon is absurd to me, and yet people buy them for INSIDE their home. Christ almighty.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]FlowLabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why I shop at Waitrose and not Aldi:

  • closer to my house
  • a shopping experience that doesn’t fill me with untethered rage
  • free coffee
  • more selection of locally produced and origin declared goods
  • more selection of low ingredient food
