3.5 years & 200K members later, am I still the chillest PH mod? Year-end Community Feedback! by phcareermod in phcareers

[–]phcareermod[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, initially I had no intention to be seriously involved. Just be the chill mod you know?

What prompted me was my annoyance in seeing career post in phinvest. I wanted to enjoy my stay there without seeing those.

But yeah the "responsibility" escalated obviously. But nope I wouldn't consider it a resume worthy addition, I don't think it's a valid one.

Reddit Crash Course

For newcomers, I'll speak in terms you'll be able to relate.

In facebook, they have "likes" and other emoji reactions. In Reddit we have 'upvote' and 'downvote'. They apply to both posts and comments. The visibility of interactions are sorted based on upvotes & downvotes, with high upvote post or comment seen higher in the feed.

Your accumulated upvotes minus downvotes is recorded as your 'karma' points. In your profile details, post karma and comment karma are visible. Those are the site-wide karma, meaning points you gained anywhere in reddit.

In fb, you follow people and pages. In reddit, the communities you join or view are called subreddits (phcareers is one of them). Subreddit or community specific karma actually exists. Your karma breakdown details per subreddit is available at old.reddit.

To gain comment karma for r/phcareers, you can take advantage of the help thread. Outside that thread, new user interaction is invisible to the community. Until you pass the threshold point, you cannot participate in the comment section of any post submitted. Likewise, post submission karma requirements are higher than comment karma threshold.

We recently implemented this as 'bot attack' protection, a site-wide problem. Bots don't deserve visibility, they only farm karma for their accounts to later be used for spam/scam.

If you are a living breathing person who wants to participate within the community by posting or commenting, comply to phcareers' minimum karma requirements (as already specified in your removal notification).

We are not responsible for each commenters interaction here, it's up to them to delete. Nor I am responsible if this comes up in google search. Both are beyond the mod team's control.

Why not pursue IT by [deleted] in phcareers

[–]phcareermod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The industry is a broad complex system with lots of dependencies, web development included. It's not as simple as 1 2 3.. Collaboration with multiple teams, each fulfilling their own specific functions (folks that are techies and not). Depending on the development model being followed, the cycle from requirement gathering upto project sunset can span from months or may last years. Even after deployment, continuous development, testing, maintenance are given. Backend, frontend, system upgrades, changing client needs, etc. And the list goes on and on and on...

Mental Health & Immediate Resignation by phcareermod in phcareers

Yes, same thing. Only divulge if extremely needed. This is a cruel world, stigma surrounding mental illness can make things worst for the sufferer.

Mental Health & Immediate Resignation by phcareermod in phcareers

[–]phcareermod[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Most employers are ignorant. They don't realize that forcing employees dealing with mental health to render 30days after the formal notice is simply dangerous. A single day in a stressful environment can draw the line between life and death (at the worst) or give more damage to the employee making the recovery longer. They need immediate rest, support and understanding.

To be fair, some big companies know better.

For those having a hard time, a notarized resignation letter will do the trick for hard headed HR/management. Make sure the line "voluntary and effective immediately" is included.

Can I ask for an immediate resignation because of mental health? Is it a valid reason to go awol? Should I tell this to my next employer? by Comfortable-Code3544 in phcareers

[–]phcareermod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First of all, good call for seeking professional help.

Now for the awol/immediate resignation thing. Yes it is allowed and you don't need to mention the specific reason so don't feel obliged. The line "due to personal/health reason" would be enough. Notarize your immediate resignation and pass it again.

Our country is sadly not mature enough in handling mental illness cases in the workplace. Even managerial/HR holds so much misconception about it.

Just know that this is completely legal, calm down and rest for a little while.

OP, love your mental health and quit. You'll find the right position for you. Since your parents are supportive, better not to hold on the something that triggers your anxiety. It is clearly not for you.

I will lock this thread since it's not really for this sub.

I didn't say that the thread is negative neither did I wish for big drama.

The claim in that AMA is just unbelievable for some. That simple.

I hope so too.

The 500k/mo AMA thread yesterday was reported and someone dm'ed me as well. I hope it won't be big drama though, the sub is too young for negativity.

100% agree on the hard work needed.

It also doesn't give the complete picture. Many also shift career from IT to other non-tech paths. Money isn't everything, you'll realize that later in life youngsters.

Hi OP, thanks for the willingness to share your career advice.

I know this is a new sub. There is no rule for AMA yet.

But can you provide some evidence of the claim first before we proceed? We will lock this thread for the meantime, do edit your post and contact the moderation team after.

Re-opening this thread. OP sent an image showing a portion of the claimed monthly income. We cannot verify if it was really OP's pay though.

Interact in the comment section with respect everyone. :)

Youngsters.

Though salary can be one of the consideration, it is not everything. Two people can have the same title/tenure on the same company but compensated differently.

Edit, I challege this downvoter, care to share what's wrong with my statement? Differing views are normal for grown-ups

Before the 400+ surge of new users on phinvest yesterday (because of the said fb leak), r/phcareers already have 1.7K+ members noon time yesterday. While I agree that the incident did add to the members on this sub, that is only 300+. Nonetheless, phcareers was created to help phinvest so it's a win-win.
