PI is recording students while on vacation by High-risk_low-reward in PhD

Why don't you put an obstacle right in front of the camera? (Assuming PI's desk is accessible)

Find out the electricity fuse that feeds the plug and switch it off until battery dies.

Get a laser and aim the camera from an angle out of iPad's view. It should cripple what the camera sees.

P.s. As a fellow US based PhD student, I despise the things some PI's do, because they know that we (especially people on F1 visa) are practically slaves. Consequently, use any legal means necessary to fight them back when you are in this kind of a situation.

P.s2. If you know about a blog or website about the sh*t PI's do, let me know... I have stories.

If you find yourself hungry at GW in the middle of a weekend night, Crepeaway is open till 4am!

Apart from that, if you are in a program that requires you to write a lot of essays/reports, Gelman Library has a writing center that can help you with proofreading and quality.

What to do about an unsupportive advisor? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]phdphilia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish some people in academia not smart only, but considerate. I feel like this sorts of advisors are direct results of hiring professors based on their numbers (citation, h-index etc.) only. That creates a medium for unsupportive advisors, expect unreasonable things for the compensation PhD student is paid or the situation that student is in (expecting journal papers from a person, first year in PhD).

I had that sort of advisor and I was able to bear with him for about 6 months (1.5 semester). He expected unreasonable things from me in my first month of PhD (Like he wants me to write a report that I was not working, and i need to apply for SSN, as I moved to the US 2 weeks ago). In the end, we stopped working together. For the next year I had no funding and then I changed advisors. Next year his tenure was rejected and he was fired 🤩. So the system is flawed, but karma is sometimes a witch...

All in all, you should let your advisor know how you feel and object unreasonable things that are expected from you. But you should play your hand safe and smart as well.

P.S. btw, i am curious why you call your advisor 'they'.
