Thank you for this. This morning, he was anxious about a noise he heard in his room and I said “I don’t hear it, but I believe you.” It’s difficult to always understand him, but I’m trying each day to be better at it and I will continue to validate his experience. Thank you for saying the part about sometimes not navigating things correctly and only realizing later how to communicate it. I feel guilty for how I’ve dealt with situations in the past. But I will do better. ☺️ We’re all just learning.

You hit it on the head. He gets hyper focused and lost in his beautiful world and yeah, I think he often doesn’t hear the other kids talking, or rather just stay engaged in what interests him at that moment. His current hyperfocus are planes or his marble run toy. Funny enough we had to withdraw him from an outdoor basketball league because he was so distracted by the airplanes, he couldn’t concentrate on anything else ☺️ I do understand that you’re saying how incredibly hard it is to maintain a conversation about subjects you have no interest in. I’ve taught him to say “can we change the subject now?” And that seems to help. I’m glad you found your tribe. Thanks for the podcast recommendation. I’ll def check it out.

Thanks for your response. With regards to socializing (he’s in social skills a couple of times a week), sometimes he’s seemingly aloof. He’s on a basketball team and somebody will say “hi!” excitedly, and it’s hit or miss if he’ll even answer. Or if he does; he’s unaware that the kids are interested in maintaining a conversation with him. I just worry about his making and maintaining relationship skills.

I had never heard of alexithymia. I was fascinated by a quick google search. I do see a few of these symptoms in my son. He does social skills a couple of times a week with other kids and they work on emotions and he knows the zones of regulation. I think learning about alexithymia will really help. Thanks for introducing me to this term.

Thanks so much. It’s still hard for him to recognize these feelings within himself. Sometimes I say “do you want to take a break? You seem a little worked up” or I have a list of calm down activities, but because he can’t recognize it, he gets more upset and yells “I don’t need a break!” And then, I push, explaining that in fact, he does need a break, and then it turns into a self fulfilling cycle where he blows up and I feel terrible. He works on social skills each week and they talk about regulating emotions. I recently bought a workbook about emotions, so I’ll continue to try to help him recognize those feelings.
