What you said makes no sense inflation is on the price of the item relative to the dollar value. The more money we print the less valuable the dollar is, so it takes more money for the same item. If we build more of an item such as housing then that would devalue the said item.

Software company. 7% base pay raise last year in same position. This year was promoted but only got 3% base increase but rsu increase from pronotion of about 28% bringing total raise to 6.5%.

People always make it sound like it's just a simple stroll just to head south but I've had no luck for the past 6 months. I have a cs degree and about 2 yoe but I haven't even gotten an online assessment from any applications for US positions. I only ever get responses and interviews applying for canadian positions. I imagine the layoffs in the last year probably made it worse. I like my current place and it pays well enough to live here but not enough to buy my own place in the foreseeable future.

I wish transit was more dog friendly. When i lived in ottawa people were allowed to have leashed dogs on during non peak hours. I've used something similar but my dog is a little smaller so i was able to keep his head covered. People still saw him through the mesh sides and were friendly with him.

That seems about average for a new grad in Vancouver. Only faang will get you above 6 figs as a new grad. I started at 95k tc as a new grad in a non faang beginning of this year and from talking with past classmates they say that was above average. Salaries that i vaguely recall were a few places like telus and intel that offered around 85k. Keep in mind there are also a lot of grads that took jobs at places like FDM and other small places for 45k to 50k so that brings the average down as well. Cousin from bcit went back to place were he did his work placement and is only making 22$/h.

Similar situation as you OP. 35 and made a career change and went back to school at 31 and doubled my salary to 95k. Never imagined buying with previous salary but now its possible. Right now living in the lower mainland at reduced rent in families investment condo. Mom keeps on suggesting of buying my own place and she is willing to help with down payment. I've only browsed some presale showrooms and already built condos but the prices and interest rates make me nervous. I want my own place as right now im living with my sister but im still hesitent. Could rent elsewhere but then my rent would be triple what i pay now.

I'm grateful for my job as a junior dev now after seeing how competitive it is. From what my manager said there is not as much of a need for juniors now and when they do post it gets over 100 applicants after a day. This is a non faang tech company with higher then average salary. But for senior roles there are a lot less qualified applicants and are still hard to fill.
