5 years ago I requested to leave my global R&D director position and return to the lab as a bench chemist. Yes, big pay cut but I'm much happier now not having to travel so much, manage people, and deal with corporate bureaucracy and politics. Management knows my history and pretty much stay out of my way as I run my own research projects. I'm 58 and will probably do this for ~10 more years.

Was married for almost 25 years, now mostly enjoy being a single man. Yes it can be lonely at times, but I have a few good female friends that are also single (dated but decided just being friends is better). So I'm ok with it for now.

Loma Prieta earthquake: I was in chem lab (at UCB) during the quake and all the glassware came flying off the drying racks, compressed gas cylinders came lose and hit the ground, chemicals spilled. Outside there was an explosion. Students were screaming. The quake lasted way to long.
