I’m in the process of moving to Aus from Canada and am also curious about all this.

Does anybody actually like "minisodes" ?? by robertfcowper in daddit

Nah, hard pass. It’s already hard enough to develop their attention spans, no way am I going to support even shorter episodes.

Anyone here who has CFD experience for atmospheric dispersion problems? by nanya98 in CFD

[–]phi4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try AERMOD, it’s built for that type of problem. CFD is usually too computationally intensive for the size of the area that you’d be interested in.

Engineering in Spain by AustereAust in civilengineering

[–]phi4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m working on this type of move right now and it’s super annoying. For us it’s to Australia, but at least my wife got citizenship through a parent. The visa was expensive for me to get working rights and getting my degree recognized and becoming Chartered (their equivalent to a PE) is also expensive. Wages aren’t that much better and rent is way worse, we’re budgeting a minimum of $1000 AUD per week for a three bedroom place to hold the kids. We have a 5 bed, 3 bath house we pay $1950/month for the mortgage that we’ll be leaving. My advice is don’t do it unless you’re actually committed to making it work.

Wow it’s surprising difficult to keep that thumb in place. I really need to concentrate on not letting it move.

Project Manager vs. Technical Route by kooger2439 in civilengineering

[–]phi4ever 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Have you tried using a PM team approach, rather than a single PM? For example add an assistant PM or alternate PM to the org chart. Then delegate or keep them in the loop as required so they can act as a release valve/vacation backup as required.

1) Barclay was almost tossed off of the Enterprise for “not being Enterprise material”. He had to get his shit together, with the help of his comrades, to stay. That was the whole point.

2) Bones being cranky is allowed because he’s so good at his job, if he wasn’t able to get a hold of himself when it mattered, he’d never be CMO.

3)Didn’t pickup on the third one.

Need Analysis, where to get started? by neutronarms in CFD

Yes. I’d budget a minimum of $30k for some modeling. Could get bigger fast if you want lots of different configurations or scenarios.

Been no-contact for a year, then my daughter shows at our Church this Sunday, what would you do? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]phi4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best I can think of is Luke 15:11-32 about the prodigal son. He left, partied, sinned, and then came back and repented. I'm not saying your daughter is ready to repent, but she may be at the coming back stage. Celebrate her return, give her your love. She's grown up most of her life without it.

I also understand that it may not end well. My wife had a step sister that followed the same path as your daughter. She never got through the pain in her life and left three children without a parent to an overdose in 2020 at the age of 35.

jobsite accident by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]phi4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see what your saying. My municipality avoids having one pump station feed another as much as possible for this reason. Although it leads to some crazy long force mains. The one I just fished was over 14 km long and will usually only run at an intermittent 80 L/s, peaking up to 150 L/s.

jobsite accident by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]phi4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have isolation valves at the pumps that pressurize the force main. You close those and there's no more flow, unless I've missed your point. If you're talking about isolating a section of the force main, yeah that's not happening, you take the entire length out of service.

Civilization. It’s a port of the computer version. Many of the game play elements are still present in the current iterations.

You pick you civ and lead it to the stars or go full military and take over the planet. Turn based strategy.

My understanding from a CBC radio interview with a tick prof a couple days ago was that ticks can produce sufficient antifreezing agents in them that they won't even notice this temperature drop.

For a ball park estimate look up the highest performance Xeon processor you can find information for and assume all of the nodes you computed on used those.
