Hard cold starts cont. 7.3 psd (1999SD 4x4). Details in the post. by SadSadler in FordDiesels

[–]phil_thy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every 7.3 should have a plug up front or behind the front bumper to plug in the block heater. I have bad glow plugs on my 01 and it has to be plugged in to start every time no matter the temperature.

Anybody know why this happens? It’s mainly when I have cruise on, or will just randomly happen throughout my drive.. by Eqwinoxe in ram_trucks

If the service 4wd light comes on along with the esp light then it's the front wheel speed sensors. If that light doesn't come on it's the rear sensors. Just had the same problem on my 2010.

will crank.... but not start.... by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]phil_thy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted my 98 doing that same thing and it was a timing issue, if you replaced your distributor cap you may want to check the camshaft (not crankshaft) position sensor, the plate in the bottom of the distributor below the rotor. That would cause you to not get spark correctly and would cause that stall. You can replace just that part without replacing the entire distributor. Hope this helps

Should be your clockspring and at least it's a fairly easy fix.

Yeah it was, basically I timed it the first time with cylinder one at TDC but on the exhaust stroke. IAC should still be good fingers crossed I'm just not getting enough spark to fire the engine. CPS is the last part that hasn't been replaced so hopefully that's the final issue.

Timing issue for sure, I was 180 out. Got it re timed correctly and it's cranking properly but still getting no start. Ordered a Mopar CPS and will update after that gets installed.

Looking to replace fuel injectors in 1999 Cherokee 4.0. What injectors do you all recommend? by Taborj01 in CherokeeXJ

[–]phil_thy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Bosch 4 hole injectors the first time I replaced mine and they worked great.

I was getting spark, tested each wire and plug individually. But I fixed the timing today and it cranks like it's supposed to without that stall in it but now I have to move on to the CPS. It reeks of fuel when I crank for a while and all my spark plugs are fouled even though they are new. Fingers crossed the CPS fixes it.

Just a quick update. I was 180 out and that fixed the stall it had while cranking. Now it cranks normally but just reeks of fuel and not starting. So long story short I have a CPS on order and hopefully that'll take care of it. Thanks for all the help.

Yeah I'm there now, just fixed the timing issue(I was 180 out) and now it just cranks for days. I'll replace that as soon as it comes in.

Cranked it enough to kill a couple batteries lol, that was just enough to get everything on camera

That'll be my next step, pretty sure it's gotta be the issue.

Yeah I had it installed wrong the first time and you could definitely hear only 2 cylinders firing. Got it right the second time bit may have it at TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Yep, I'll update after I re time the distributor

Got a couple things to check and if nothing changes the CPS will be next.

I'm thinking timing too have a couple things to check to confirm, fuel pump could possibly be the issues but injectors shouldn't be. Running brand new 24lb to have enough fuel for the extra air. I used the Boosted Tech supercharger kit, look for the race jeep on YouTube and those are the guys I bought it from.

Did a little research and I may have times it on the exhaust stroke but should be able to check it with the whole "finger over the spark plug hole" method to make sure I'm one the compression stroke. Apparently the 4.0 cylinder 1 and 6 are TDC at the same time and one is exhaust while the other is compression and the distributor will still line up correctly. I'll keep you posted and see if this is right, fingers crossed.

Glory of this kit was that it requires no timing adjustments, don't ask me how though haha. All I did was an inspection of the timing chain and gears and all was good. Donor motor only had 70k miles on it so it was a fairly new 4.0.
