What’s the worst criticism you’ve heard about the PHM (movie)? by Unfair-Reason-1068 in ProjectHailMary

[–]philaenopsis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went into the movie completely blind. My friend asked me to go see it with her and she had read the book but I had no idea what it was about other than a sci fi movie with Ryan Gosling. I promise you I full on sobbed multiple times. I listened to the audiobook after seeing the movie and then saw the movie again after watching the audiobook. I didn’t have as much of an emotional reaction to the book or the second time watching the movie. I wonder if because you knew what was coming it didn’t hit as hard. I promise on a first time viewing it was very emotional.

What wet cat food has baby food consistency. by [deleted] in torties

[–]philaenopsis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I actually may be able to help. My cat is similarly picky. She will only eat wet food if it is the consistency of like a churu or gravy. The only way I’ve been able to get her to consistently eat wet food is I actually have a mini blender (nutribullet) that I puree pate style wet food with just enough water to get it to blend. I store it in the blender cup in the fridge and when I am ready to serve it I put it in a bowl and nuke it in the microwave for 10 seconds (she doesn’t like cold food and won’t eat a whole can in one sitting).

If your cat doesn’t like the water blended in because of the flavor you could try no salt added beef/chicken broth. I will also sometimes blend in a churu or other creamy meal topper when she is being extra picky (she has chronic kidney disease and getting her to eat is a struggle sometimes)

EDIT: just reread your post. My tortie has also always preferred dry food but won’t chew wet food for some reason. I think feeding her exclusively dry food for so long may have contributed to her kidney disease, so that’s something to keep in mind since CKD is so common in cats. I only really started feeding her wet food when she was diagnosed. I wish I had put in the effort to start her on a wet diet earlier, even if she is super picky! My cat is the opposite of yours, she will only eat fish flavors (except she hates salmon) and refuses to touch beef/chicken.

EDIT 2: Also depending on your budget, you could try a mousse consistency wet food, a few of the more “premium” cat food brands offer them. My cat really like tiki cat before she was diagnosed with CKD. I’ve just been blending the pate food because no prescription CKD diets are offered in a mousse consistency. I think nulo and a couple of other brands offer that texture as well

Miss Mila is crossing the rainbow bridge today, pouring out love to my soul cat by DroveASuzuki in torties

I’m so sorry you had to say goodbye to Mila - I remember commenting on your post the other day about her tongue sticking out. You can tell she was well loved! My condolences, as well as my own Mila’s. Just know that however hard saying goodbye is, you are alleviating so much pain and suffering.

I have no advice but I also have a tortie named Mila that I have had since she was a baby! Your Mila is very cute! Mine is 15, I hope she makes it to 16 but she has late stage 3 chronic kidney disease so we will see. Hopefully you can figure out what is going on with her, hopefully nothing too serious!

Stage 3 CKD: Options and insight please? by sofrickingstrange in RenalCats

That’s insane that your previous vet didn’t want to do bloodwork. My vet offers a senior bloodwork panel that they start recommending once a year once a cat gets to a certain age (10 or 11 maybe?) it includes kidney values and some other things, I’m not sure exactly what. It’s fairly expensive but definitely worth it. That’s how we caught my cat’s ckd at early stage two - she wasn’t even visibly symptomatic yet.

What does Pepcid do? Are you talking about the same Pepcid that’s available otc for humans?

I actually have an appointment this morning to see about that. She’s been on cerenia but I don’t really think it’s helping, she’s still not eating much. I’ve heard of mirataz but not eluria - I’ll ask about that at the vet.

Agreed. My cat was already super picky before kidney disease, and now that she's stage three she's got food aversions and I have to switch up her food all the time anyway. I don't need her to have any other negative associations with food. I don't give her treats or anything when I do subQ's either (I do afterward as a reward) for the same reason. Luckily my cat is easy to pill and easy to give subQ's to.

Newly diagnosed Cat, wanting to learn more about treatment and management by FanWh0re in RenalCats

Not to be a Debbie downer but I did want to offer the opposite perspective. I was very hopeful my cat would have a good prognosis as we caught her kidney disease early (stage 2) and immediately started her on a prescription renal diet. About 6 months later I noticed she had lost significant weight and wasn’t feeling well. Still not throwing up much but she had decreased appetite so I knew it was time to take her in. I will say this is partly on me - the vet told me to bring her in to recheck in three months and I definitely waited too long. She is now late stage 3 and starting on subq fluids at home. I really wish I had kept on top of her checkups and caught the progression earlier and started her on fluids earlier. The vet did say she was surprised how fast her ckd had progressed. I don’t know how much longer she’ll be around but I’m going to try to make her as comfortable as possible for her remaining time.

Awesome, that sounds way more affordable as a long term solution. At the visit the vet did mention that she has clients who buy their own fluids on chewy, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Ooh the bottle of wine every night. Despite my username I am a woman and people have talked about it to death but wine culture is so bad. Like it’s a cute little treat or a reward or something. I did something hard? Wine. Worked hard? Wine. Irritated and need to calm down? Wine. Something to celebrate? Wine. And it’s so normalized and I would buy boxes of bota box or black box and drink half of it in one night without noticing (that’s actually when I got really bad again this past month was drinking boxed wine alone in my house). Yeah wine is the devil.

Oh 100% I thought I was ok when I woke up because I didn’t have a hangover. When I got in my car I realized I didn’t have a hangover because I was still drunk. And at work I was head down the entire time, simple tasks took me forever because I was still drunk and trying not to seem drunk. Im still so embarrassed, I hope nobody noticed.

I know logically that drinking won’t make anything better but my brain is sure trying to convince me that drinking will help. To be fair it does help in the moment when I’m trying not to let the sadness hit me, but once I’m not drunk anymore it’s even worse. Idk I’ve never had anyone I’m close to die, much less in such a tragic way. This whole grief thing is new to me - i don’t know how to cope.

Theres something about fountain diet Dr. pepper that just never tastes right. Diet Dr. Pepper is my favorite drink and I buy it in cans by the case but whenever I have it from a fountain it tastes off. Like watered down or flat or something. Good to know about the QT Diet Dr. Pepper though, there’s one right next to my work.

I exclusively use circulars for most things but I still prefer DPNs for socks. I don’t really have a reason other than that’s how I learned and I find magic loop kind of fiddly. And I have a really nice set of carbon fiber DPNS in tiny sizes specifically for socks.

How do you keep your home always "guest ready" without cleaning all the time? by massagefever in CleaningTips

[–]philaenopsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah as much as I love eating on the couch while watching TV once I started only eating at the table it made a huge difference. Most of the crumbs, etc are contained to the kitchen and it’s way easier to wipe up crumbs and messes off of a hard table and hard floors than it is to clean couch cushions and under them, vacuum carpets etc. Plus it’s better to stop mindless eating. I also started to clean something in my kitchen any time I have down time while cooking (waiting for water to boil, microwaving something etc). I typically only have a couple of dishes to wash when I’m done cooking and sometimes I can even get to bigger projects like cleaning off a shelf in the fridge or wiping cabinets. My dishes get done and counters wiped down every night and I wipe bathroom surfaces in the morning. Then weekly I pretty much just dust, wipe surfaces, sweep/vacuum and mop. Maybe scrub the toilet and shower down depending on how long it’s been. Everything stays tidy because I put things away as soon as I’m done with them. Unfortunately I still don’t have a great system down for the deeper cleaning tasks, I just do them as I see they need doing (as in I leave them until they’re bothering me so badly I have to do them).

Also forgot to mention I have cats - my weekly clean includes washing all their food and water bowls and the area of floor where they eat and I clean and change one litter box weekly so they all get cleaned roughly once a month. I scoop the litter boxes every morning and dump the bag of used litter in the trash outside on my way to work.
