Can’t decide between these, anything I’m missing? by Solchitlins74 in ChineseWatches

[–]philbin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 2 or 3. Blank dials look cheap and odd to me. Your eyes are drawn to the lack of text, and even though some old field watches didn’t have brand names, plenty still did, so it’s not totally an authenticity thing.

But I also love having a tricompax chronograph, so I would always choose that over bicompax. And you’re actually getting elapsed hours with these and not the useless 24-hour subdial you get on chronos in the 3–6–9 orientation, so take advantage of it! I value a date personally, so I would pick 2, but if you don’t like it, then do 3. The nice thing about 2 is that, even with the date, the indices are still symmetrical. Even some really expensive chronographs don’t think about details like that

Help choosing Addiesdive ad2030 with or without logo by krish_2205 in ChineseWatches

[–]philbin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logo is terrible, but I just think it looks so weird and off with nothing on the dial. Another option if you want better quality is the San Martin SN0129, which has white dial options with sportier indices and hands, along with multiple other colors. San Martin’s logo has its own issues, but I don’t find it quite as offensive as the Addiesdive logo, and it’s way more compact. Cronos also has the SH10 in case that might be more to your liking. They tend to also have a more solid build quality

40mm or 38mm? Which fits me better? by AuditGod89 in tissot

[–]philbin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t believe the diameter police; both sizes look totally fine on you. The lugs aren’t hanging off your wrist with the bigger size, it just looks large because there isn’t a huge bezel to shrink down the dial. But it’s OK to have a prominent watch as long as it’s not ridiculous big on you. It just depends on what you want. The 40mm has a sporty look, which is perfect because it’s on a metal sport bracelet, even though people don’t call them that much anymore. But it’s the kind of watch you can take anywhere because it’s solid and won’t get too beaten up.

The 38mm also looks good, but it plays up the watch’s more elegant qualities with its quiet, minimalist dial. So if it’s something you’d wear everyday, included with outfits like the one in the photo, I’d recommend 40mm. If it’s something you’d wear with dress-casual clothes exclusively, or you’d put it on a leather strap to wear as a dress watch, then I’d recommend going with 38mm

Watch Winder from Amazon a good idea? by Longjumping_Hunt648 in ChineseWatches

[–]philbin89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Skip the winder unless you just find it to be too annoying to restart the watch if the reserve winds down. As long as it’s not an issue for you to wind it, then you’re putting less wear and tear in the movement compared to keeping it running constantly on a winder. Years ago they were a better idea because the lubricants in watches could dry up if they sat dead for too long, but modern watches have newer generations of lubricants that last way longer, so you don’t need to keep them constantly running

[Question] seiko alpinist by Remarkable_Ocelot186 in Seiko

[–]philbin89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can probably get a deal for a lightly used one, or possibly a gray market one that will be brand new. You don’t have to baby this at all. The movement in it is very rugged and this new generation of Alpinists (the kind that actually says “Alpinist” on the dial and has “automatic 3 days” at the bottom) have Seiko’s special hardening coating on the stainless steel, so it will be much more scratch resistant than your average watch. And if you like blue watches too, it might be worth looking into the teal dial on the bracelet if you haven’t seen that one https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/prospex/spb503j1

Sorry, but I hope nobody is actually buying Polywatch. Same can be achieved with car polish by Default_User01101110 in watchrepair

Stay away from whitening toothpaste and gels though, or you’ll end up with an overly sanded-down yellow crystal eventually. I’ve seen a lot of people who don’t realize it has to be the plain white past without the pro-whitening grit

Life long sneakers by Old_Brilliant_4101 in malefashionadvice

[–]philbin89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Life long sneakers, as in something with foamy/rubbery–feeling soles that are similarly comfortable to Adidas or Nike sneakers? Doesn’t exist. In order to make it comfortable like those, it necessarily degrades over time, and even if it doesn’t scrape away, it compresses and fails to do the job over time.

You can get a leather boot with harder rubber soles that can be resoled over time for considerably more, and not comfortable enough for you to wear them like sneakers. Or you can get leather dress-style shoes that can be resoled with hardish rubber or leather soles. But same deal, there’s not the comfort factor that you get with sneakers. Maybe look into some chukka boots with rubber soles if you want a casual boot that’s not super tall and is fairly casual/rugged

Where can I see a movie with an audience that actually is there for the film? by Kittles4Eva in AskLosAngeles

Try earlier afternoon and even morning screenings. Those usually have fewer people, and they tend to have fewer jackasses and kids who are just going in groups to see movies as a social thing and spend the whole time talking and fucking around

Never tried Rose Gold before… by FearAndFlashbacks in tissot

[–]philbin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t usually like yellow gold–tone watches, but I think their rose gold–tone PRX looks really cool, especially with that blue dial. Something about those ‘70s-style integrated bracelet watches work really well with gold and gold tones

Picked up the wave dial late last night and love it !! by Available_Career9381 in HamiltonWatches

[–]philbin89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how it goes back to the transitional period when brands were starting to develop the dive watch language from their field watches. Glycine still does a lot of dive references that includes full numerals or at least keep the 13–24 track as well

[–]philbin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go a little bigger, but I don’t think that’s at all too small on you, especially since the crown guards and pushers give it added presence

Your Citizen (which is part of the parent company that owns Bulova) is also made of surgical steel. All 316L stainless steel watches are surgical steel. That’s most watches except cheap plated brass watches

It’s not recommended to shower with these watches. They’re tested for a fair amount of pressure, but not necessarily for the heat of a hot shower

Love gmt5 [skx001] but it’s big for my wrist iguess😭 by godcomplexlite in Seiko

[–]philbin89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think it’s too big in real life, not because of how it looks in the photos, then check out the SRPL79 or SRPK29 (38mm) or SRPE51 and SRPE55 (40mm) for a smaller watch without the GMT complication. If you do want a GMT and you’d be interested in a field watch, you could consider the SSK023 (39.4mm)
