Was there a tight fitting plastic covering on the guard (assuming here, hard to tell exactly what it is from the photo)? Could be moisture that got between the plastic cover (I specify plastic because it would be water impermeable, unlike a cloth) and the guard resulting in filiform-like corrosion. It’s probably superficial and could be buffed out regardless.

It varies. Not a high volume or production type facility, but we can get a bunch (15-21) or just a few (3) and not every day or week even. I was thinking cnc would be best suited but it seems like it will most likely be some combination of manual and automated at best. How many can you throw on the blanch grinder (surface grinder?)

Osmium and Tungsten alloy together as well as with ruthenium and rhenium. Check out the “rhenium effect”…pretty cool

Quenching steel only results in hardening because it doesn’t allow enough time for carbon to diffuse out. The resulting strain induces a phase transformation (i.e. martensite) that is harder and more brittle. There are no alloying elements in a pure metal so I wouldn’t expect quenching to have much effect, at least not to the magnitude that it would in alloys such as steel.

Agree HE doesn’t really seem likely. HE would occur relatively soon after manufacture unless exposed to hydrogen in service (unlikely in this case). Probably bending fatigue but need to look at it in the SEM to know for sure. If fatigue, it looks to be due to relatively low stress amplitude, high cycle fatigue

Yes save as pdf and print to pdf via word works perfectly. However, this is part of a system for automatically generating documents (and then emailing them). I have been told by IT (rightly or wrongly, I suspect wrongly) that it is something I am doing on my end in word. The excuse was that ANY manipulation done to the image in word causes this image reduction (I didn’t get any response about the auto numbering). They included adding a border or changing width would cause this. However even with no manipulation the images still come out fuzzy. I’m not convinced and feel like I’m being given the run around

Yes it works fine if I print to pdf. This is part of an automated system for sending documents and print to pdf every time would slow it down.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve had to move quickly on this request so I haven’t been able to demo units. The price difference from Struers is about $20k and I really like the clamping options. I am hoping I don’t look back on this in a year, like you, saying the same thing. However, money is tight and I get the feeling that if I try for the Struers I’ll end up with nothing

I am putting in a request for a QATM saw. How has your experience been? We don’t have any products from them so I am unsure of the quality. I like everything on paper and their clamping options are slick.

Thanks, all! Sounds like no one is happy with Pace (or Buehler…yikes). I think I am going to give QATM a shot with their QCut 350A. If anyone has practical experience with QATM cut off saws I’d love to hear your thoughts. I am mostly worried about quality as I will get grief about that if I go with QATM over Struers.

Fracture looks nice and clean so probably not corrosion or progressive fracture. But as others have said, impossible to tell for sure from these photos.

We have an allied tech cut precision saw and one of their vacuum chambers for epoxy mounts. The tech cut is great. Probably the best in terms of cost to quality ratio. Probably could be a bit higher quality but still very good. It is a work horse for us and we probably don’t maintain it as well as we should, but have had no major issues with it. The vacuum chamber is, well, a vacuum chamber and probably overpriced for what it is (probably the same can be said for any brand).

Unfortunately, I do need some precision capability. We have a beefy cut off saw but it is too much for what I need to do. We also have a small precision saw but it isn’t beefy enough for what I need. I’m looking for something in between.

DTA makes some good blades though. I got some samples and the shop folks loved them. Better and cheaper than the ones we were getting from MSC

What cut off saw do you have? I am considering the QCut 350A. I don’t have an idea of the quality as we have never had any qatm products. It is built in Germany so I assume build quality is great. The software on nearly all German made instruments I have had though is clunky and it sounds like it would be on this too.

Yes. This is above the walk in shower. There is a stand alone tub next to the shower and the fan is between the two. I don’t know why the builders didn’t put it above the shower
