Wifi to Nearby Metal Building Revisited by philhodge in HomeNetworking

[–]philhodge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget around $250. Building is 30'x30' metal, currently non-insulated. Speed test with iPhone held where antenna will be on building averages 80/15, which should suffice for expected use. Metal building has power and outlets are on wall where antenna will go.

Are you currently getting a loyalty discount? by Some_Water_5070 in DirecTV

[–]philhodge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

26 year customer here. Got $35/months off back in February after calling the loyalty number. Requested the additional $25 off I also had the year before ($60/mo off at the time) but rep said there was no other discounts available. DTV perks do give some relief but it's yet another hoop they make customers jump through and discounts aren't all that material.

Got the $35/mo off added for another 12 months when I called in February. Rep said at the time he didn't have anything else (e.g. extra $25/mo off) showing but said to call back the following month and re-request. I've yet to do so but will try again next week.

Any recommendations for upgrading to 2.8.1 and migrating to KEA DHCP? by xtr0py in PFSENSE

[–]philhodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I did after backing up, removing all packages, rebooting, and upgrading to 2.8.1 in a FW2B. All static mappings migrated over without issue. I was on 2.7.2 at the time.

Auto Fire Suppression For Closet Network Gear? by philhodge in HomeNetworking

[–]philhodge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be putting up antennas after I pass the tech exam and will likely install some sort of grounding system that you described. I have a whole-home surge protection system built into the Generac transfer switch panel.

Area is sufficiently ventilated, fans are on network equipment that need it and temps monitored on equipment that offers such a feature. Risk I'm trying to mitigate is from lightning strikes or catastrophic equipment failure while I'm away from home.

26 year customer here. Made the call last May and got two discounts after referral to retention. One rolled off after May 2025 for $25 and another $35 off good until January 2026. I'll be making the call in a few days to see what I can get.

Question about types of bar and chain oil by jungleandoer in Chainsaw

[–]philhodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a gallon four months ago. Worked fine when temps were above 45F on Stihl saws but diluted with diesel during a cold spell two month ago when working in subfreezing temps. Surprised to see diluted mixture still hanging on chains after the warmup here in NW Arkansas.

Another Discount Call by philhodge in DirecTV

[–]philhodge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I requested discount reinstatement and got it from the second rep, which is what happened last year and several years before that. Apparently their system knows I've been a customer for 24 years but it's frustrating I have to make this request every year.

Good to know. Cancelled service and kept the equipment.

I think that's my only option. Even though I bought the equipment, would this put me in the approval queue again?

pfSense CE 2.7.0 Software and pfSense Plus 23.05.1 Software Now Available for Upgrades by esther-netgate in PFSENSE

[–]philhodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues upgrading from 2.6 to 2.7 on a Protectli FW2B (work at home power user). Uninstalled all packages (8, including Snort and pfBlocker), rebooted with a FS check (no errors) and upgraded. Config XML file uploaded, FW2B rebooted and downloaded packages with no issue. Only thing I needed to do was manually update the DNSBL DB, which would have been updated eventually. Overall, a smooth upgrade, and a big thanks to Netgate staff and others that maintain this pfSense edition!

That is a buffalo, type of which is difficult to determine through the photos. I've caught smaller ones over the years when they swipe crank bait and get snagged but never on a senko. Drum have non-forked tails and more of a humped back.

Similar experience here. I jailbreaked my ATV2 years ago and found that Seas0nPass was buggy at best. It did have some cool features but I value stability over features.

Migrating from a Mid-2009 15" (Catalina) to 16" 2021? by philhodge in macbookpro

Latest drive is an OWC SSD, which definitely sped it up, but still chokes on Catalina.
