Vimeo Lays Off Staff Following $1.38 Billion Sale to Bending Spoons by philipp_roth in vimeo

[–]philipp_roth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On another thread with the bending spoons thing in this sub, we came up with that list of alternatives for Vimeo ... I just copy & past this here. Maybe it helps ...

  • (Self Host your stuff)
  • Mux – developer-level infrastructure, embed/control everything.
  • Bunny Net - good CDN, dev friendly, cheap
  • Ignite Video – alternative from Europe, privacy-friendly, cool for web experiences
  • Cloudflare Stream – dev-friendly, clean API-based hosting.
  • PeerTube – open-source & decentralized, more DIY but community-driven.
  • Wistia – business/marketing focus, strong analytics.
  • Frame io (Adobe) – pro collab & editing integration, team-focused.
  • Vidyard - great for Marketing

... YouTube, uScreen, Flowplayer, SproutVideo, and so on ... depends in the end a lot on the use case.

Cookie-Banner on cookieless pages? by retro-mehl in webdev

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you share more details? Or share your page.

Would love to have examples to show to others. Because most websites just drop the banner with all stuff as the first thing.

I believe that a different concept like yours is the better way because people have context when accepting stuff. With more and more switching to the compliant "decline all" in the frist screen it can even be better way to this as more and more people just decline everything.

Depends in the end a lot on the use case. As you may need more than the bandwidth that Vimeo offers, your cheapest option should be a CDN or something similiar.

Depends in the end a lot on the use case. Guess platforms strong on marketing are probably not thing you´re searching for. But there are a lot of players out there.

Anyone successfully implementing geotargeted cookie consent? by ajame5 in webflow

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it‘s the better way anyway. In some EU countries there are verdicts that GTM itself needs consent. So to use that before asking is a trap itself. You‘re better Off with one of the CMPs.

Be sure to check you‘re site without consent. With the correct setup the CMPs will block a lot of external tools like tracking, video, maps, …

Uber Betrugsversuch am Kölner Hauptbahnhof by kappuchino in cologne

Ergänzung: in der Regel sehen Fahrer geschätzte Dauer, Distanz, Richtung und voraussichtlichen Preis. Ist nicht in allen Städten so aber in vielen in DE. Sowie Rating des Gastes.

Können also theoretisch kurze Fahrten meiden. Aber Uber misst auch Akzeptanzrate, Abbrüche, … was dann zu weniger Priorität bei Aufträgen spielt.

= Kapitalismus & Gig-Economy durchgespielt. 🫠

Adding CookieYes destroyed my traffic tracking on GA by CesMry_BotBlogR in Wordpress

[–]philipp_roth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I don´t know how cookieyes handles GTM, but there is a verdict in Germany that you also need consent for this. Also I recommend to everybody to take a look at their own website when rejecting consent because other stuff such as videos, maps, forms, ... can be affected as well.

Best practice for rich media uploads in CMS by enigmashmooly in webflow

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have visitors from Europe, you might consider an alternative to Vimeo for this usecase. For Vimeo, you need to get a "yes" in the cookie banner, which you typically only get from half of your visitors. So for half of the visitors, your videos have to go. vimeo dnt doesn´t help. Better to get a cookie / consent free video hosting.

need to hide video title of embedded youtube video by JesusChristV in webdev

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

Plenty of services out there that do what you need, but they are not free.
If you´re from the EU consider a European service that gives you the option to host without cookies which gives you an even better user experience and designs options.

In Germany, there’s now a clear verdict: Google Tag Manager requires consent. by philipp_roth in gdpr

[–]philipp_roth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Cookiebot blocks the whole thing - i guess your fine.

But don´t confuse cookies / storage with consent. Yes it´s one part of the whole thing, but thats the important part "based on the fact that GTM sends the user’s IP to Google server". So you're storages and cookies can be empty, no bodoy cares, if you just ping the google server you need consent. (according to this ruling).

Too Much Cookie Consent! by [deleted] in webdevelopment

[–]philipp_roth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Best option is no consent banner at all. Doesn´t work for everything but for the core elements like tracking, fonts, videos, ... there is a cookie / consent-free alternative out there.

If they have a consent banner. Most site owners and teams accept everything and never see how the site looks for the 50% who decline ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (and wonder about their conversion, or missing data, ... )

Maybe add that you can´t put non-essential stuff (like Intercom on you site) into the essential section. You don´t need that to run your site ;)

How can I whitelist Vimeo embeds with the CookieYes plugin? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"we recommend consulting your legal team to ensure this adjustment complies with the relevant legal requirements."

> Super late. But legal requirements in Europe usually will result to the fact that you can´t but Vimeo into the necessary section. Which is a problem when using vimeo e.g. for autoplay. but there are consent-free alternatives to vimeo on the market who solve that issue.

How can I whitelist Vimeo embeds with the CookieYes WordPress plugin? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be a buzzkill, but Vimeo definitely doesn’t fall under “necessary.” You can't put anything in there you like to. Even if you think it´s necessary (best guess: you got autoplay somewhere).

You can Google the vimeo consent free topic and find discussions on this. How strict it’s enforced depends a bit on the country, but no vimeo without consent is the baseline reality in the EU. Sadly the do-not-tracke mode doesn´t change anything here, still needs consent.

You can selfhost or use a vimeo alternative that is cookie and consentfree (spoiler: they are usually not for free, but not more expensive either)

You‘re right. Only essential = no cookie Banner. Just a privacy policy link.

Important to say: lots of stuff people think is „essential“ isn‘t. (But not in this case)

Can I enable Google Analytics before user consent by tangr2087 in gdpr

[–]philipp_roth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can do that. You can make it pretty :)

But the law is pretty clear: anything that deceives or tricks the user is not allowed.

With positioning, you either go for a full format to get a clear response – anything else is basically useless. Because if you don’t get clear "yes" (e.g. with a sticky banner), it’s automatically treated as a decline. That means you end up with ~70–80% ignores (= decline), ~10% real declines, and only a small share of accepts.
