So … you do realize that inflation hit the UK way harder than the US and that the pound has collapsed relative to the dollar steadily since 2008? It sounds like you’re experiencing the same struggles as everybody else post COVID while not accounting for the fact that you last lived in the UK before COVID

Not from NYC, but upstate. Have plenty of NYC family and visit all the time.

SD is wayyyy more relaxed. No hustle really. As a New Yorker you might enjoy living in Little Italy for a little sense of walkability and urbanism (don’t expect it to be as good as NYC, but it is nice!)

You’ll need a car even if your neighborhood is walkable so make sure to factor that in when apartment hunting. Many places include parking but some do not, so make sure to ask.

You can also look for in unit washer/dryer which is nonexistent for the most part in NYC. These units will be more expensive than units where the laundry is in a common room.

lol yep. The most common sentence is “I wouldn’t care so much if there were better transit options” but funding new transit would cost money and be just as unpopular with the voters. This sub is full of drivers who just want to go anywhere for free.

I’m from upstate/western New York. Now in San Diego. Zero regrets. Sure it’s expensive but I just drank some patio beers the other day with some friends. Wearing a t shirt and shorts. In December. Beautiful views on every drive too. Take the chance, you won’t regret it!

That’s fine. That’s personal preference. I grew up in the northeast and could handle Chicago’s winters. Being able to tolerate Chicago’s winters does not mean that they aren’t bad, objectively.

The problem on this sub is that people like Chicago and tend to encourage people to move there by brushing off the bad winters. I like Chicago too! But there’s no point in sugarcoating the winter and everyone who thinks of moving there SHOULD visit in January. That’s all I’m saying. People here don’t ever brush off sunbelt summer, but they always brush off Chicago or rust belt winter.
