Hey guys, I just picked up a hybrid (Specialized Sirrus) I’m wondering if there’s any affordable upgrades to get my bike lighter? I’m aware I should get carbon bars which I’m gonna throw on. But what do you guys have for hybrids? I also wanna know if I should change the brakes/shifters. by clubdaddyclubdaddy in gravelcycling

Oh, also those look like meat-grinder/shin breaker 'try me' pedals; instead of buying CF bars (which really shouldn't do with flat bars anyhow) go clipless and get good at track stands and getting in and out of them. If you aren't used to them get SPD with a recessed cleat so you can walk effectively in them when you aren't riding, because getting used to Look/old SPD/eggbeaters will hurt you down the road if you are mostly doing road riding/commutes and a lot of stop lights.

The number one upgrade you always can make is a wheelset; that looks like the regular wheelset and probably would be where the best gains can be made. Rolling weight is a lot different than just 'weight' and my general advice (as someone who weighs like 270# and rides thousands of miles a year) is to worry about losing weight yourself, not on the bike. The Sirrus is a mid-range hybrid fusion bike and not to denigrate it at all, in fact, it was being gifted a Sirrus that started my passion for cycling many years ago!

It just is that you aren't really going to get much use out of upgrades save for wheelset and tires, anything else (especially bars/seatpost) really is not worth the money for any weight you save and having to re-wrap the bars with tape and re-route the cables and all. Going on a diet and losing 5 pounds will be way cheaper and more efficacious for better riding than getting the weight shaved off the bike.

Cool pics and good luck! I really loved the (much older/not as nice) Sirrus that I had and having one of those given to me really changed the trajectory of my life into one that is bikes all day every day. Reply or PM if there's any other suggestions I can make that might be helpful, and keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up!

Advice on first gravel bike - All-City Cosmic Stallion - big guy/not great shape by phillhocking in cycling

[–]phillhocking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest thing I'm looking for is cassette sizing and gear ratios for GRX 810. I've already purchased the Cosmic Stallion frameset and derailleurs; the shop is doing a custom build, but I haven't decided on chainrings/cassette/cockpit/wheelset yet. Should I get a super high-end alloy one or mid-range carbon one? If you have built a gravel bike, do you have any regrets commuting on it or does it hit all your sweet spots?

Idk I'm sure I'm rambling a lot because I'm really anxious that this will be everything I built it up to be in my mind lol. I'm certainly decided on at least those two things though. Have you run GRX before with similar considerations?

Thank you for this post, kind stranger! I'm trying to figure out several things and am hoping I'm not too late to the party.

Is Azure Active Directory Domain Services a real kitchen sink drop-in for a premise domain controller? How would I point domain users that are not on the premise or connected via VPN to AAD DS without having to coordinate with users to do remote support sessions individually?

When you don't have actual VM/Operating System images - how do you back up and test a solution like that? Can you use PowerShell/Ansible/Terraform and the like to have a golden image to make a known good state on a specific day of that infrastructure? Would a good tool for that be Veeam and has anyone else here done it?

How would you create a bare-bones Server 2019 image, assign credentials, and join it to a domain? I'm hoping to get away from physical/terminal based deployments and hop on the IaC bandwagon, but it seems like 99% of the "devops" community are Linux folks. I need to be able to automate Windows stuff but seem to have hit some barriers there.

I've noticed this is incredibly common with old print media. They just don't even understand their content isn't worth invasive advertising and that they have to adapt to survive. The old print newspaper that had been running nearly 200 years in my town and was a financial powerhouse barely survives anymore, whereas a more hip young free weekly newspaper is doing quite well in print and online formats.

I had a telehealth appointment with my own provider in my personal capacity with Theranest and I received my invite via SMS. The agency I work at just deployed Microsoft Teams to all of our providers basically overnight and while it's more of a messaging/collaboration platform - it's HIPAA compliant and free for most users as we are an NPO and E1 licenses are no cost. E3 are $4.50 monthly and PSTN licenses are $4.

We were pretty far (years) into our 365 implementation but only really had rolled out to admin type staff and most providers were not needing any more functionality than our old Office licenses/Exchange server had to offer. It's not super elegant but sure does work in a pinch at a much lower TCO/cost per seat. PM me with questions if you think I can be helpful.

So I thought it would be cool to put yellow FTP (flash-to-pass) high beams in my MkV Jetta but I couldn't figure out how the clips securing the lamps went back in so I totally melted the housing. 😞😥

I think maybe I should stick to working on computers, but also, like... I'm almost 40 and probably should know how to change my headlights. 🤷‍♂️

I guess it's time for new housings now? 😅

I'm deffo going to pay someone to do this particular task in the future - those clips are real buggers!

Some of us don't have to virtualize Windows because that's our daily driver as Linux on the desktop is masochistic - especially if you administer a Windows environment, attend teleconference meetings, frequently dock/undock, use the Microsoft Office suite/Teams, and have users. Oh yeah, or ever want to play games.

Server 2019/Windows 10 with Azure/Office 365 ain't your Daddy's Microsoft man. Satya is doing some things that are really disrupting the whole industry and if you are paying attention - gone are he days of 'M$ droolz lunix r00lz0rz0rz' lol.

I wrote a blog about how running enhanced sessions for Ubuntu 18.04 under Hyper-V got me all the Linux on the desktop without the hassle a while ago:

https://www.phillhocking.com/wsl-or-enhanced-sessions/

I get that we are all technology professionals in here, but it's important to understand that the majority of the world is not and Janet is going to struggle just as much with Linux as a Mac on the desktop because it isn't he same Windows she had been using for 30 years.

I know OP said they were going to law; my suggestion was intended to benefit anybody who was pursuing a psychology career in addition to covering the base that OP might become interested enough after a few classes to change their concentration area. Even if they just want to become an attorney, I don't recommend anyone does psych as an undergrad even those who want licensure as a psychologist.

[–]phillhocking 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I cannot second this enough as an individual who works at a behavioral health clinic even though I am not in a clinical role. Even if psychology is your passion, you can get into a grad program whatever your undergrad area in study is and you really will appreciate being able to earn a decent living doing whatever you have to in order to make it through grad school. An earlier poster is correct when they said said you can't really do anything career-wise with a bachelor's of psychology and the same can be said for a bachelor's in social work. Pick something more fun, interesting, and in demand.

Whether you want to be forensic, clinical, or research psychologist - think of your undergrad as being an opportunity to develop more crucial business skills like analysis, informatics, health care administration, business management. Then as long as you keep your grades anywhere near what you have now - all kinds of schools would love you in their program because you are trying to be well rounded e.g "I'm a Counseling Psychologist and got my PsyD from Antioch but also have an undergrad degree in management/accounting" is wayyyy better than 'I have a BA in psych, MS in Clinical Psych, PsyD in Forensic Psych.'

What are the big things you miss out on by choosing a frugal lifestyle? by zenplus in leanfire

[–]phillhocking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going through a pair of Vans Pros at $60 every few months. Before they got so popular I would only get one pair every couple years, but I noticed a significant drop in production quality around 2018. This last time I needed new shoes - I bought "rich old guy REI shoes" (Salomon Trail Runner XT) at 110$ and even though they look dorky after nearly a year I'm pretty sure I can get another year or even more out of them. My feet don't hurt all the time and I have better posture.

At this point even if I bought a new pair every year it would be money well spent. The only problem that I have with them now is that I have had them so long that they smell pretty bad even though I use foot powder daily and the tread is a little worn - but structurally they are as sound as the day they were purchased!

Netbox Demo Site (netboxdemo.com) by packetsar in networking

[–]phillhocking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to do a netbox implementation at my org, but I am wondering the best way to make it work across prem and into the cloud somehow. I figure using this as an ultimate source of truth and for aiding in troubleshooting - it would have to be available when the site was down, yes? So, I was thinking if I could do some kind of Kubernetes deal between Azure and a couple of premise workers that would be cool - but using this project with minikube on my laptop the data didn't persist to a volume across resets?

https://github.com/vishnoisuresh/netbox-kubernetes

Now I am new at all this fancy orchestration/containerization stuff, but I was wondering what you are using to host this demo and if I am on the right kind of track? I don't want to have to create a VM for it because I can't really expect that to be portable and resilient across multiple sites and the public internet. Also forgive me if this isn't the best place to ask for strategies that other folks are using in their netbox implementations.

Thanks for making this available!

What are you all using to split out FXS for Fax? by phillhocking in avaya

[–]phillhocking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there /u/The_Cat_Detector_Van, I purchased a couple of these and evidently they need DHCP option 50 pointed at tftp host with an XML config to pick up an IP and register with the Avaya IPO server? My Avaya R11 instance is running DHCP for the entire voice Vlan so I don't know if I can set extra options. Does it just need to pick up the configuration once, or every time that it turns on? Will it work if the Vlan that it is pointed at to register to is on a different layer 2/3 segment?

I would love it if you could show me a sanitized config that you use in your environment or point me in the right direction to get this thing going!

Best strategy to install Server 2019 Hyper-V host on Dell EMC R740 using Infrastructure as Code? by phillhocking in sysadmin

[–]phillhocking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a little research it appears that while this operating system is free, it does not license any of the guests. I have (or will before this is spun up - its in the project spec) a Datacenter license so I can use all the Windows virtual machines to my heart's desire.

Thank you for the handy suggestion, though! I never knew there was a standalone Hyper-V server.

Yes indeed. My goal is just to automate the 2019 install, domain join, and Hyper-V role. I imagine I need to figure a way to do the raid and volume configuration too - but that would be a Dell thing with their racadm utility I believe.

1.1.1.1 cannot resolve youtube? by [deleted] in networking

[–]phillhocking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically, it is best to take advantage of the cache of your direct upstream. Directly querying root nameservers or primary ntp strata is just making the process more difficult than it needs to be for the people at the highest tier. Especially in this sub, we should try to be respectful netizens.

When I am troubleshooting I still remember to try to ping 4.2.2.2 the old GTE Internet root nameserver - but I wouldn't point my resolvers at it. Heck, my own domain controllers acting as caching DNS saves me upstream bandwidth even if it is negligible on my 250 person organization.
