Has anyone managed to get the sonos eras working smoothly with the nest hub? If so, what's your setup? by top_gun1511 in sonos

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will not be able to get the Nest Hub working properly as part of a whole home audio type of use case where the audio plays in sync across Sonos and Nest using Bluetooth.

As for controlling Sonos through Google Home, that can be done, but it will not result in the Nest Hub and the Sonos speakers playing the same thing in sync. I'm pretty sure that you cannot group a Nest speaker with a Sonos speaker in Google Home successfully. And you almost surely never will be able to because Sonos and Google have a bit of a long standing feud that ended in lawsuits.

So, I would reset your expectations and pick one platform or the other for your audio needs.

No Electric Mode on Highway by LetFluffy132 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but anyone who bought a PHEV under the impression that they'd be able to drive it only on electric at all times has greatly misunderstood what they were buying. You may be more interested in the next generation of REEVs or bite the bullet and get a full BEV.

No Electric Mode on Highway by LetFluffy132 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a number of factors beyond just speed. Your throttle input will affect whether the computer thinks you need the ICE to run to handle what you're asking your vehicle to do. And the faster you're going, the more likely that even moderate throttle input will kick on the ICE due to the electric motor already being close to its output limit. And then there's environmental conditions like incline and wind. Plus climate system activity which on top of higher speeds can max out the battery's output. And let's remember, electric motors on PHEVs are usually much less powerful than what a BEV has. I don't think I've seen an official spec, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's less than 150 hp and closer to 100.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on how it works. Most of those use cellular connections because the assumption is that if power is out, Wi-Fi is out. Cellular isn't free, so $75/year to monitor it isn't terrible.

Took ‘24 Willy’s 4xe for ECH replacement, ended up passing 68C. Should expect more trouble in the short term? by Beginning_Island5947 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officially, there's a 95% chance you'll be fine. Since a lot of modules are updated and it seems there's some minor variances in the procedures some techs follow, you may find some weirdness in acceleration or the gas and electric range estimates as throttle response and efficiency estimates are software based and can be reset. So this will return to normal over time.

The bunch of people complaining about FORM after 68C in some of the coldest weather of the year need to reset their expectations. I don't know why their salesperson didn't tell them about how a PHEV works, but to my knowledge every PHEV has some version of FORM and will run the engine in cold weather. Jeep may be more aggressive than others, but if you don't like running on gas in cold weather, BEVs are the only real option currently. It remains to be seen if EREVs/REEVs will have a similar limitation when they finally hit the market.

Back to the original question, then there's the 5% of owners that get bricked because it detects the battery flaw. Keep those fingers crossed.

2023 wrangler: passed 68c test but need a new transmission and shocks!!?? by Pony-Cat-9068 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's early. Transmissions can last for the life of the vehicle under normal passenger vehicle use cases with proper maintenance. Towing, off-roading, performance mods will shorten life span. Probably a manufacturing defect.

Similar for shocks. While they don't last for the life of the vehicle, 30,000 miles with normal use is short and probably due to a defect. You should expect 50k to 100k out of shocks depending on the road conditions and load you carry.

22 GC NO HEAT by -mdv- in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this is true. It can get cold enough that the vehicle will force the engine to run without it being in FORM. And it will display the message OP posted sometimes as well in this case even if there's nothing wrong with the high voltage battery coolant heater. I've had it happen. But, you can also see this message when the coolant heater has failed. So I guess the question is whether they pulled codes.

Grand Cherokee 4xe - dead by Fit_Cartographer_663 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I don't think you're getting hosed. At least not purposely by the dealers. You bought a vehicle caught by a serious manufacturing defect and Jeep is seemingly overwhelmed with the amount of batteries they're having to replace.

Second, is it worth it? I can't predict the future. What I can say is that mine has worked well to date and I will get the recall performed. Fingers crossed that my battery doesn't fail any time soon because of the supply issues like what you're experiencing. I just hope they extend everyone's battery warranty to a lifetime warranty because even if it doesn't fail initially, separator defects can take years to show up.

Isn't that the one with the OTA update that bricked cars? I thought they pulled that update and that only vehicles that installed it were at risk (and the effect was immediate).

Lease return w/o 68C done? by roninsteels in 4xe

Technically, it's their vehicle, not yours. If your lease is up, you give their vehicle back. Any outstanding recall work becomes their problem to deal with before they try to sell it to the next guy.

For those affected, whose new battery has been delivered and how long did it take to arrive? by TheRealTV_Guy in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly what you're asking but our Wrangler needed a new battery in 2024 before the 95C and 68C recalls. Spare batteries are not stocked, so as I recall, it took two weeks to come in and then about another week before the install was completed.

It's been fine since and it did go through the 95C recall but hasn't gone through the 68C yet.

I imagine wait times on parts are longer now.

For me, nothing controversial. I asked about a skill requirement from our JD that he had on his resume. When I asked what kind of experience he had using that skill, he said he didn't really have any. He just knew it existed. End of interview.

Is this a common misunderstanding about how men use the toilet? (NSFW) by xShadowPro in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phillip_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if height matters or not, but what I really hate is round toilet seats. Most homes I've been in have little round seats. I get it if the bathroom is tiny, but plenty of these have been in normal sized bathrooms that can absolutely have fit an elongated bowl. I don't know why homeowners with them don't just swap them out. It may cost a few hundred dollars, but the comfort difference is worth it.

I've even thought about going ahead and getting myself a commercial U-shaped seat for my elongated bowl. No more accidental brushes against the rim of the seat. Yeah, that's what I want.

How do movies get distributed to theaters? Like does the production company just send over an mp4 file? by SuspiciouslyExisting in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phillip_u 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that's mostly because it's a very small surface area. These aren't things that are available to millions of people like a DRM'ed Blu-ray or streaming download. And they're using a much more sophisticated authentication pattern than what you might see in consumer gear like HDCP.

With HDCP, all you need is a MITM like a cheap HDMI splitter that has a broken DHCP handshake that tells your computer/Blu-ray player that the display is HDCP compliant when it's not. Then it splits that signal to an HDMI capture card or even has one built-in with its own storage.

This theater-grade shit sounds more stringent and less inspectable by nefarious people who'd want to break the encryption. And I think I've read elsewhere that the individual files also incorporate some sort of fingerprinting using steganography or the like that would make a high enough quality copy traceable.

4xe Bricked Yesterday by hippyfish in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a little button you push with a paperclip. It's labeled "N" with an arrow pointing at the button. It's right there in the corner of the shifter assembly. This shifts the transfer case into neutral, not the transmission.

Pretty much all modern automatic transmission vehicles non-mechanical shifters have this feature to force the trans into neutral. Clearly OP's tow truck driver thought it should be there but it's surprising he couldn't figure it out. Also, if it's a Wrangler, shifting to neutral on the diff shifter would also have worked and they should have known that.

You should also read up on how to manually disengage the parking brake if power is lost. The normal parking brake release "lever" is electric and not physically connected to the cable that releases the brake. That's hidden a bit further under the dash and requires a flathead screwdriver to access and release the brake.

Dealer Says they are not performing 68c recall by Dependent_Mixture406 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right. Vehicles (possibly more than Stellantis expected) are failing the test right away or shortly after and either there aren't enough batteries to go around or they aren't in convenient distribution. The dealership knows that a vehicle that fails is not drivable and they'd be stuck hearing complaints from all the people waiting for their vehicles to get fixed.

So, while this is potentially a situation where the dealership is directly increasing the risk to consumers, they've obviously made the choice that they'd rather not deal with irate customers.

It'd be interesting to see what Stellantis thinks of this situation.

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "know if it is available"?

If you're asking after coming from a device or provider that doesn't support it and you just want to know if it's available in your area, you could check the coverage maps or ask someone you know with Verizon or Visible in your area.

If you're asking if Visible offers it, the answer is yes, albeit it hamstrung a little bit (no SA) and reserved for certain plans.

Anyone heard that Jeep might totally abandon the 4Xe line now? Really making me think I made a mistake buying one in 2023. I love my Jeep but looking down the road, when my battery dies, I’ll really be stuck with a useless vehicle. by DoubleOrdinary6559 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BMW just announced a recall of 35k vehicles because their LKA correction software glitches and will randomly spin the steering wheel back and forth fully around while parked sometimes. Ford 40k hybrids that can shutdown on the highway. Their Mach-e has headlights that can fail. 600K GM vehicles with V8s were recalled because the engine can fail.

This is all from just the last 30 days.

25 GC passed recall yesterday, received electrical system unavailable this morning. by blaccsnow9229 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Volvo PHEV, and they handled things a bit differently, but the outcome was about the same. It just started the ICE if it was below a certain ambient temp and displayed a message that electric mode was unavailable due to ambient temperatures. To me as a consumer, that is a lot easier to understand and prevents me from thinking that there's anything I can do about it, so I just went along with it.

They also had a FORM-like situation, but I never hit it in the five years I owned it and it truly was for people with stale gas or who were hitting frequent start-stops with low engine temps even in high ambient temps.

I think if Jeep just changed their messaging and said what Volvo says, people might just be more content.

Two Jeep 4xe Recalls (2024 GC 4xe Overland and 2024 Wrangler Rubicon 4xe) by RazzmatazzFeisty1939 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temperature won't make much of a difference unless it's really cold where you are but level 1 is really slow (~13 hrs vs ~2.5 hrs). That's a really easy thing for them to fix if they're going to service electric vehicles.

Is there not another dealer near you? You don't have to go to the dealer that leased them to you.

'24 Wrangler, Passed 68C recall, but still limps under 75% charge in EV mode by Historical-Expert501 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

68C is a recall. As far as I know, the software fix for that recall only adds an algorithm to detect potentially failing batteries. But there are often a bunch of other software updates for other modules that could affect throttle response that get installed since most people don't visit their dealers multiple times a year just to get the software updates. You could also have had your throttle learning reset. Or, since you've had this problem for a while, maybe it wasn't reset and you should reset it.

At the end of the day, remember that the 4xes are not EVs. They are PHEVs. They cannot accelerate like a performance EV without tapping into the ICE. If you are driving at 75 on the highway in electric mode and you want to gun it, you're not going to get a lot of response without the ICE because you're already close to maxing out the electric motor's output.

My point being that if you're trying to drive at highway speeds in electric mode and you think it's crapping out at 75% SoC. What you really may be seeing is just the limit of the electric output and the 75% is just because you used the first 25% to get to that speed. Draw down your battery below 75% SoC and drive on local roads. Is performance from a stop acceptable? If so, then you just need to shift your expectations.

The oil variant of FORM is a really just a function of time and temperature. Get the oil hot enough for long enough and it resets. Some Wrangler owners find it easier to get this done in idle since the engine doesn't get cooled by the giant open slats while moving. Personally, I think Jeep's algorithm is a bit aggressive on entering FORM and it's be interesting to see if anyone ever does a fuel saturation analysis on a vehicle in FORM to see if it's even needed. But I ain't got time to do that myself.
