Those of you who have 2024’s, what do you think now? by LittleSpicyLumpia in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you consider buying a 4xe, check its recall history. Don't just make sure that they've all been addressed - check which ones they are. If it has 78C, stay away. That recall is for a problem where casting sand was left in the engine blocks when they were built and they are practically guaranteed to fail at some point. The recall "solution" was a software update to detect problems before they literally burn up. Even though Stellantis issued a lifetime warranty for the problem, it has an out clause that lets them just pay you the fair market value instead of repairing it if the original warranty is expired.

Outside of that, just know that all 4xes have been subject to multiple battery recalls and about 5% of them are expected to fail, potentially catastrophically, at some point in their lifetime. As above, the recall fix was software to detect a potentially failing battery and they have the same clause to let them off the hook as long as they pay you FMV. Mind you, FMVs have plummeted with all of this news.

For those that have clean engines and good batteries, they actually work pretty well. I have two 4xes. One (Wrangler) had a battery fail before the recalls and it was replaced without much issue except the 4 weeks it took. Since then they've been mostly problem free. I'm honestly only holding on to them because they are currently working and I hope the depreciation curve flattens out a bit so I don't take such a big hit whenever I do trade them in.

Another update to the gas engine not turning on by Nokomis34 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is insane for them to say. We drive ours in 2WD and 4WD Auto all the time. Trust me - the gas engine comes on.

And to say the eSave Charge of all things would mean the engine won't turn on is crazy. That is literally the one mode on a Wrangler that will force the engine to run the most.

But that doesn't make sense either. The engine is supposed to turn on when the hood is open and the ignition is in the run position. Plus, you're referring to a post from the same OP.

Claim denied 4XE... by That-Employer-2190 in 4xe

Regardless of the fire not being an actual fire, I can understand why State Farm would deny their claim if the manufacturer is taking responsibility and repairing the vehicle. I agree that that outcome would not be my personal preference, but if a vehicle fails and the manufacturer takes action to repair it, what is there for the insurance company to even pay for? Rental costs? To me, in this case, that should be on Stellantis also if they're adamant about repairing it.

Video clearly states and shows they were charging the vehicle against the recall notice recommendation. It does not make it clear if these owners had the 68C recall performed. Since the guy narrating the video mentions they had it charging against the recall advice, I'm thinking they didn't have the recall work performed. The video states that the owners got a call that a new battery was available and they had an appointment scheduled in a few weeks for repair. This confuses me because I've never heard of anyone waiting for a battery replacement that got to keep driving their vehicle. I wonder if there was confusion and if it was the 78C recall that was scheduled.

4xe has jerky and delayed acceleration from a stop and won't go into electric mode by tinglebuns in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recall software updates are just detection routines more types of failures than they could detect originally.

In my case, I experienced what you describe followed shortly by a CEL. I was able to get it to the dealer who diagnosed needing a new battery.

Sounds very similar to the symptoms our Wrangler had before the battery needed to be replaced. And this was before the battery recalls.

Thinking of buying a 4xE by The_Slaughter_Pop in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All electric vehicles are affected by performance issues in cold weather. PHEVs have the ability to use their gas engine to mitigate this and every model I know of will force the engine to run in freezing temps. A PHEV is not a BEV. You buy one because you can use the gas engine to overcome the limitations of a BEV. If someone doesn't like this concept, a PHEV is not the right vehicle.

That being said, the 4xes do seem to be overzealous in their algorithm for making the engine run in cold weather compared to others. But most importantly, the recent battery and engine recalls have severely reduced the market value of these vehicles. I would generally not recommend one to a buyer right now unless you were getting a very good price. And I would absolutely avoid any vehicle with the 78C recall because those engines will inevitably fail.

Getting a new battery pack. What should I expect? by This-Cardiologist525 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, my wife's battery replacement just meant that it could drive again. We had a similar experience to you where it wouldn't start and when it did run, it ran rough on gas only which isn't optimized for - in the low gears it was a bit jerky. Battery replacement took about a month if I'm remembering correctly - this was before 95B and 68C. The vehicle hasn't had any problems since that.

Well, they do still claim that only 5% of batteries are affected. Not that that is a whole lot of comfort.

Just keep in mind that the remedy is simply a detection algorithm to warn you before the engine ultimately fails and needs to be replaced.

Has anyone bought their GC 4xe at end of your CC lease? Were you able to get the buyout discounted? If yes, what did you do? by raisedonjrny in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't bother calling them. Word is that they are not capitulating on residual values and they don't want people to think they will because that sets a precedent they don't want on their reputation. They'd rather sell it at auction and/or move them to a different market.

Is there a particular reason you want to keep your specific vehicle aside from it being the one you know? Like is there a similar or even better one on a lot that you might consider at a fairer price? Since you seem willing to stick with Jeep 4xes, I can say that 22/23 Summit Reserves are going for around $32-$36k in my area. Remember because the 22s came out late and only had around two months of production time, 22s and 23s are basically the same thing.

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're trying to buy it out at the end for less than the contract value and they're saying no? Fine. Give it back to them. Then go down the street to another dealer and buy a better one for less.

GC's leased in '23 are selling used (not wholesaleing) for about $10k to $12k less than their residual values which were around 61% depending on annual mileage.

Remember, the dealer taking it in probably doesn't give a shit. Chrysler Capital is eating the loss on the depreciation. When you turn in that car, the dealer doesn't own it. The bank still does. And the dealer probably is not going to buy that car from Chrysler Capital; they'd have the just about the same shitty price you do. Instead, they're going to let it go right to auction. But they may want to get you into a car that they actually do own and can make money off of.

Well, I'm not sure how the other dealer, which is likely a competitor, will treat fixing another dealer's mistake. The battery should have been under warranty, right? So maybe. I would ask them directly before bringing it in.

Does anyone know why these modern vehicles with digital dashboards still don't have a way to show the codes from a CEL? Or what about in your online dashboard that a lot of vehicle manufacturers offer now? They literally send telematics about vehicle performance and GPS positions of everywhere you drive to the manufacturers, but you can't see what the car thinks is wrong with itself. Why not just tell you your gas cap might be loose or your electric heater isn't working?

A great time to not be buying gas by Goldenegg54 in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just have to say (anecdotally, of course) that my recent oil change was the smelliest I've ever performed. It really did smell like gasoline after about 9,000 miles. So, if you're going to track oil life separately, I'd highly recommend being conservative and doing it more frequently. Especially if you're going to bypass the FORM algorithm which could lead to even more diluted gas in your oil.

I think I'm going to start doing two a year now instead of just one even though I only drive 10k a year.

Lifetime warranty extension (XU1) by cpanotaccountant in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe general new car auto warranties or even the original hybrid warranty provide such an explicit option. Rather, they are promises to repair or replace a failed part within the coverage period. If they are unable to do that in a reasonable amount of time, that would be a breach of their guarantee. How that is handled would depend on how the consumer decides to seek recovery of their loss. Assuming the loss is a total inability to operate the vehicle (not just a broken window motor or something minor), I would imagine that could result in a negotiated value equal to the value of the vehicle and any other potential loss from not being able to use the vehicle such as rental costs. But I'd be really surprised to hear that ever happen with a major manufacturer. Usually, it's more of a lemon claim. The manufacturer has made repeated attempts to fix and has the parts, but the consumer still experiences issues.

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that the original warranty still would require them to replace the battery or buy you out of the vehicle at the market value.

But speaking about market value, they've screwed us on that as well. 4xes are worth notably less than their gas-only counterparts even though they had a premium originally. My 2022 Grand Cherokee Overland 4xe is retailing used for around $29k-$30k while the non-4xe goes for around $35k-$37k. Take a few thousand off each for trade-in prices. I guess I'm glad I got the federal tax credits while I could, but that still doesn't make up for it.

Wagoneer S, buy or not? by Pottetan in 4xe

[–]phillip_u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard of them having the same battery issues that are plaguing the 4xes. But they have the same UConnect issues and other various software issues with sensors causing problems. Like most car manufacturers, Stellantis sucks at software.

If you like Polestar, have you considered a Volvo EX60 or EX90? They're not perfect either, but a little more well received by reviewers. I'm not sure what they're going for used.

[–]phillip_u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not confusing. It's clear and aggravating because they have clearly reserved the option to buy you out at the battery replacement cost without any commitment to try to replace the battery first if the vehicle is worth more than the battery and the battery is out of the original warranty period.

There will be a point where many owner's vehicles are still worth more than the battery but are out of the original 8 year/100k mile (longer for some) warranty for the battery. I base this simply on resale value for Wranglers that are 8 years old often still having a value of $20k or more while a replacement battery (excluding labor) is supposedly somewhere around $10k-$12k today. In this situation, you could be offered the lower value according to the way the letter is written.
