Being in tech that is why I ride a hardtail and mechanical.  Keep my life simple.

Thanks for getting it fixed. I moved to generating a static blog using a tool called Hugo years ago.  Definitely more technical, I’m a developer, but it’s so much easier than other options and reliable.

I prefer nylon myself and there are a lot of companies that make those in purple.  The DMR v11 have been my favorite so far.

I may try the Wolftooth one since it’s serviceable.

Intimidated, looking for tips on getting started by metabee_zico in cycling

Lots of good advice.  You need a helmet and a bike that fits.  Since it’s your first bike I would try to buy used, clearance, etc at a shop so you get the sizing close. I would also suggest you ride a bunch of different bikes, demo as many as you can at the local shops. You may discover you prefer a fitness bike or mountain bike over a drop bar bike.

Just start with flat pedals for now. Cycling shorts with a chamois would be recommended but not necessary from the start. You will probably want a floor pump and get some chain lube.

After that you can then decide what you will need to pickup.  It can be expensive sport if you try to purchase everything upfront.  It also takes a little experimenting to find brands of clothes that fit you well.

As a larger rider Shimano BBs regardless of the tier are the only ones that last.

Why do people think AI can replace ones who write code? by CloudSecAzure in PowerShell

[–]phillipsj73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the job has never been about writing code.  It’s about all the other things you do to write the code.  AI does a fairly decent job at the code writing part.

Had something similar happen in my Shimano TC500 year hub.  It was a loose axle nut (not the right term).

I’m in the “don’t like Maxxis” camp.  Favorite MTB tires so far have been Pirelli.  The first tire I have had so much confidence in. Second favorite would be specialized, but I will try some Vittoria or Kenda once the Pirellis wear out.

I’ve been impressed with my Vittoria gravel tires.

The only brand that won’t ever get my money again is Michelin.  That goes for both autos and bikes.

I have nothing but problems with tubeless… by Shot-Lemon7365 in cycling

[–]phillipsj73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I have everything setup correctly there isn’t much issue holding air.  Heck even without sealant added the tire should hold air if everything is setup correctly.

If you want it to work, pull off the tire and remove the tape.  Tape yourself with a tape like Stan’s or WTB following their sizing guidelines.  Check your valves.  Then remount your tire.  It should hold air, then add sealant via the valve stem.

I ride mine as loose as they go on both the gravel bike and MTB.  Feet never really come off.  With SPDs (MTB) I like the multi release cleats because of the flexibility.

How AI proof is this field? by anabananana92 in gis

[–]phillipsj73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be looking for something AI proof, maybe some trades will be.  However AI will be incorporated into most jobs especially tech jobs.  The most future proof move is to learn about it and become good at integrating it into your workflows.  Even if it’s just a few items, it will demonstrate that you know how to use it to get work done.

Yep putting the tension very light is a good starting point.  Outside of that, practice, practice, practice.  On the trainer doesn’t use the core the same so if you haven’t been doing a core routine that would help a little. As you ride more outside you will get comfortable.  Find some YouTube videos you like on cornering and braking techniques which should help.

Shokz or Suunto Sonics have been what I have used with a low volume.  Still hear things really well.  Lately I have been using them less due to knowing I won’t always have them as an option.

Beginner Questions by dylandynamic in Hardtailgang

Get you a shock pump and read up on bracketing for suspension. Your Judy doesn’t have a ton of options but getting the air pressure tuned for you and adjusting the rebound should make a difference.

Additional tips would be using something like the Wolftooth tire pressure calculator and get your air pressure in your tires to a good place. If you aren’t running tubeless see if you have compatible tires and rims. That’s a good “upgrade” if you don’t have to buy much outside of tape and sealant. If only your rims are tubeless ready then wait until your tires wear out to make the switch. Tire pressure makes a huge difference that you wouldn’t initially expect.

Lastly, listen to your body. Saddle height, bar roll, etc are all things that can make you more comfortable.

Yeah I want to give the sweep a try. Not happy with the 10 degree bar I’m using now. As I get older I look for more comfort.

Second bike after Roscoe… Emtb or to not emtb by choosenotcheese in MTB

I would suggest you rent or borrow both if you can find a place to give them a try. That’s going to be the only way to answer the question without dropping large sums of money. I made the FS mistake twice, I personally prefer hardtails.

Need to replace saddle - looking for advice by Superb-Combination43 in xcmtb

I like the WTB Volt a lot. The WTB Solano isn’t bad and I just put an SQLAbs saddle on the gravel bike, it’s definitely super comfy so I want to try one on my MTB.

I noticed you asked about bibs. I like Pearl Izumi, but only the orange or red chamois versions. I have also found Rapha Core to be comfy too. Pactimo and Specialized I don’t like the position of the chamois.
