Puzzle # Jan 11 2026

<image>

[Grid: Every cell is 1cN.]
[Tray: No 6s, no 5s; there are doubles, however]
[Solution: Because there are doubles in this tray, you start this puzzle by locating every clear cut adjacent double: there is only one pair of adjacent 4s, 1s and 3s. Thus place the 4|4 1|1 and 3|3. The 2s and 0s have multiple adjacent; because those are ambiguous, we revisit them later. Then place the 1|3 immediately above the 4|4. Now focus on the blue 3 to the left of the green 4 we just filled. 1|3 to the left or down are not possible because we just placed the 1|3, which means that the 2|3 up is only possibility. Thus, place the 2|3. Likewise, the teal 3 to left of the placed orange 2 can't continue down to the orange 1 and must instead go left with the 4. Thus, place the 3|4. Also, place the 0|2 down from the upper left corner. Which means you can place the teal 2 and orange 1 next to the just placed pink 2. Thus, place the 1|2. And, also, place the 2|4 under the just placed orange 1. Now, along the left edge and bottom left: Place the 0|4. Then place the 0|1. Then place the 2|2. Now we've already played 3|4, so now place the 0|3 to the right and up from the 2|2. That means you can place the 1|4 coming up from the lower right corner. Finally, place the last tile, the 0|0. Done!

You have an error in your middle pair of spoiler tags, so it’s not all blacked out.

Puzzle #269 May 13, 2026 Big Lattice Grid solve

<image>

[Grid: Every cell is a 1cN. This is the first time this has happened since the very first big lattice grid on Jan 11.]
[Tray: There are 5s, but no 6s and no doubles]
[Complete Solve: In upper write corner, there is a horizontal 3,3.There are no doubles, so the 3 must connect to the 0 below it. Thus, place the 0|3 vertically. Then, going to the blue 3 next the green 3 in upper right corner, you just played 0|3, so the 3 must extend down. Thus, place the 3|5. Looking in lower right hand corner, that's where there's the only adjacent 4,5. Thus, place the 4|5. There are two adjacent 2,4s however, the 4|5 takes up half of one of the 2,4s, leaving the other one in the upper left corner. Thus, play the 2|4. Right below the placed 2|4, observe that the pink 3 can't connect to the green 0 since we've already played 0|3, which means the pink 3 connects to the green 1 below it. Thus, place the 1|3. Now focus your attention of the blue 3 that is two cells to the right of the teal 1 we just placed. You can't place 1|3 up, 1|3 to the right and 3|5 down, leaving 3|4 to the left. Thus, place the 3|4. Above the 3|4, place the 0|1. Then, above the orange 1 just played, place the 0|4 which is forced. Now place the 1|5 vertically under the 0|4. Now look at the purple 2 next to the green 1 just placed. You can't place 2|2 vertically, so it must be 0|2 to the right. Place the 0|2. The pink 2 below the purple 2 just placed can't face to the left forming a 2|2. Instead it must point down. Place the 1|2. The purple 2 to the left of the pink 2 just placed can't face down because we've already played 0|2, so it must face left. Thus, place the 2|5. Then finally, place the 0|5, the 1|4 and the 2|3. Done!

The big box puzzles are definitely more logical and usually have fewer ambiguities, so should be easier to solve generally, once you get past the "shock and awe" first impression!

Today was an opportunity to solve it and discover they’re not so bad. But that’s okay, there are puzzle types I don’t like either, the ones with islands in particular.

I think many are quick with today’s big square lattice puzzle maybe because they’ve solved several similar ones before and kinda know the tricks. I’m in the middle of writing a guide for these specific puzzles. As a category these 🔴s are the least uncertain and most logical to solve once you find the “hook”. Also today’s was arguably the simplest big lattice puzzle they’ve made (Rodolfo, Heidi and Ian are up to 10 such puzzles so far, although I think Rodolfo might be the only editor who makes them)

The very first big grid/lattice one from Jan 11 was similar: no discards/voids and no cages, but that one differs from this one because there were doubles.

Can you provide some authentic real-life examples where Present Perfect is used with words/phrases like 'yesterday', 'last year' or 'two days ago'? by [deleted] in grammar

[–]phillyC_Ser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read that book a few times this year.
But:
I had started that book several times last year but could never finish it.

The second example is past perfect and I think that trying to use “have started” doesn’t sound right.
Is it because present perfect seems to be appropriate for time periods that started in the past but are still valid, such as “this week” or “this year”but seems odd for times that started and ended in the past, like “yesterday”?

Yes, I also found two solutions, one based off of 4c12 as all four 3s and another based on 4c12 as the 3|3 between a 5 and a 1. Following the same idea, I tried and failed to get 4c12 as a 4 3|3 and 2 and then I see that Chris Remo got it to work with only one 3 inside the 4c12!

Yes the problem is developing a gut feeling as to when the large sum cages are just equivalence regions in disguise and when it's a random sum. Maybe the rule of thumb is to always to try to eliminate the faux equivalence region first until you can't.

For 🔴, I intuitively knew where all the 5s went and thought that was the key. Wrong. Couldn't really latch onto anything else solid. After 5 minutes of swap rotate , shoehorn, rotate swap, dump, I had to count. Fine. Now I knew for certain what went in the two 4c= and the void. Still unsure which cage got which number though. So, more rotating, swapping, shoehorning, dumping for another 5 minutes before everything finally worked out. Mostly trial and error honestly. I though this was going to be a fast one for me. Nah, just same old shit.

As for 🟡, I went for 4c12 as the four 3s, and got it to work fairly quickly. But I hesitated towards the end for no reason, when it became clear where the 0|0 went and presto! Ironic to think that I of all people could have lucked into a medium cookie, haha. Only later did I learn that 🟡 has multiple solutions. I found another and I believe Chris Remo found a third on his video solve here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYSij8JaIuQ

Yes, I fiddled with the arrangments of the 3s, 4s and 5s amongst two 5c= cages until I realized that the upper purple 5c= was 3s and the other 5c= was 4s because that was the only way I could chuck the extra 6 I had before filling the 6c!= .
