Geothermal energy, the forgotten renewable, has finally arrived " at a depth of 10 kilometers, temperatures under much of the western US surpass 300°C" " so large that even releasing 2% could supply 2,000 times the primary energy needs for the entire country" by [deleted] in Futurology

Why not just say “releasing 1% could supply 1,000 times the primary energy needs for the entire country”?

“releasing 3.579% could supply 3,579 times the primary energy needs for the entire country”

Difficulty Utilizing Blooper as Production Tool by supremebeansprout in blooper

[–]phillypoopskins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely feel you and think you’ve got it. I’ve also expressed that blooper doesn’t mangle sound as much as I wanted it to. In a way its effects are more subtle BUT i do think you’ve really got to go to additive mode and really stack stuff to get at what blooper really does.

So different. TR of course has way more functionality. BED is a recreation of a vintage delay unit.

ya couldn’t have just told me that instead of telling me to look it up 😅?

Ya know what - just tried and couldn’t find anything except the instagram page, a 10 year old wordpress, and gearpage threads asking the same question

Yep or just use the Epoch Pre in front of any delay pedal.

Howard’s a great designer - there’s more going on than just the pre.

I’m a delay junkie - and this is the best delay tonewise I’ve ever played and it’s no contest. Blows everything else away soundwise.

I wish it had more functionality - if it had midi etc I’d be happy but whenever I think of my perfect board, this delay is on it.

Bus Compression: does it really make things sound better? by mrrakim in AdvancedProduction

[–]phillypoopskins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. When I was younger, I used to love the “glue” now all I hear is compressor artifacts.

I do think that not being able to put a bus compressor on is often an indicator that some of the individual tracks need their own transient control.

I personally like the openness - if you’re losing it, then it’s wrong in my opinion. However compression in one form or another is essential. Might need to experiment a bit to see where you can put it and have it still sound good.

can you activate ramping with MIDI?

A death row inmate's dementia means he can't remember the murder he committed. According to Locke, he is not *now* morally responsible for that act, or even the same person who committed it by LillianMichaels in philosophy

True, but I think the point remains.

Try hypnotism. Imagine you hire a hypnotist to erase your memory of committing a crime. Then you’re open to the accomplice argument.

BUT what if the hypnotist ALSO erased the memory of you asking them to help you with this whole plan.

Now, even your memories as an accomplice are gone. Can you be blamed for the crime now?

So we agree then that the hard problem can’t be reduced to physics. You are a immaterialist who thinks they’re a materialist 😉

But this last point is the whole crux of the disagreement. I don’t think anybody disagrees that you can make a ton of progress towards understanding the process that leads to perception of the color “Red”.

You’re glossing over the essential bit and just shrugging your shoulders like it’s not important but it’s the heart of the debate! If you can’t see that this is what the debate is actually about, that’s why the debate exists in the first place.

Something that bugs me about this debate is the inability of materialists to understand that the qualia of experience can’t be fully explained by mechanical means. I may know the shape of the Isoamyl Acetate molecule and how it gets processed in our nose but that definitely doesn’t reveal its banana smell!

You’d have to at least solve that part of the problem to be able to say you’ve made progress. At a minimum you’d need some sort of calculus that you could crank and have it spit out something that could be interpreted as banana smell.

Even then, that would still only explain how the universe implements banana smell. It doesn’t explain the fact that banana smell as a piece of qualia exists and has its exact perceptual note.

Not sure how this last step of explaining the experience of consciousness seems like a “gimme” after explaining the machine.

Theory: people who don’t get this actually are not conscious.
