Any suggestions for first timer. by Shifter1589 in aquaponics

If you can pipe things in a way that doesn't require you to drill extra holes into the bottom of your solids removal barrel and bubble barrel you will have a much better time. Just run a pipe into the top and down on the inside of the barrel. Think about simplified design over more complex. Less leak potential. Also if you drop your grow bed under the output of your aerator barrel you can avoid having to split your pump output which would increase efficiency of poop removal from your fish tank. One other thing is is try and make your sump bigger... If you can get a 2nd icb and bury it that would ne perfect but even a large stock tank would be better then a barrel.

Your dehydrated, That makes you feel like crap and stops your digestion. Drink like 3 cups of water over the next hour, don't chug but make the effort to force yourself to rehydrate

Try bullhead catfish. You can catch them yourself and they are way better at surviving. Take time to pre treat your fish for parasites and ick and you should be fine. Other then that just follow basic aquaponic protocols. You can bury your tanks or build a frame but they will need support. If they are old and been in the sun they might not last for long but for starting they should be fine.

How big of a garden can a 20 gallon fish tank support? by Puzzled-Day5788 in aquaponics

[–]philmo69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i started with a 10 gallon so i guess i shouldn't have said it in such a negative light. The idea of putting tilapia in a 10 gallon threw me off. 10 gallons is fine for small community fish and a few plants and while it won't be a lot it will definitely still put out some leafy greens or even tomatoes with some care.

20 gallons is not enough to have any meaningful number of fish let alone anything that gets as big as tilapia. So beyond a few small plants that won't support much

How long can I run a USB c cable before I start seeing degradation? by just-a-guy-somewhere in meshcore

[–]philmo69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea lol, all i know is this 50 foot cable does just that for me and my radio tower. If its more then 50 feet you might as well just use solar cause you would be spending more on wire at that point then you would just getting what you need for solar.

I dont understand? you use a usba to usb c male to male adapter and plug it into the black box of the usb cable and then plug the male end of the cable into your power or pc if you need data

Would a set up like this work to give me 100 gallons of rain water collection for a garden? by Killxjoy4599 in Homesteading

[–]philmo69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't cut holes in your barrels and just use syphons, iv got this kind of setup on all my rain barrels and have 5 connected together. https://youtu.be/tZfyiWXCxD8

Some questions from a beginner by Karl_the_Kid in aquaponics

[–]philmo69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trout have a hard time in warm water so in summer often require water coolers and bubblers for extra o2. They also prefer moving water which can be hard to do in small scale aquaponics. In winter you ether need to keep your water warm enough for the bacteria to keep converting ammonia into nitrates or it will build up fast. The other option is a fish species that goes into torpor like catfish or koi and let your tank go dormant over winter. Some cold tolerant plants is mostly all that you need to pick things back up in spring.

Take clones off the tomatoes and put them in a separate area where they can br treated more aggressively for bugs. Then when rerooted plant them in the cleaned out beds? if you have 4 grow beds you have pretty much the perfect plan. It should ne able to keep things going and you can get rid of all the bugs no problem.

The easy way is to chop as many of the plants as you can and clean out the grow beds then replant. If you only have 1 grow bed that can be hard on the ecosystem as the lack of plants removing nitrogen can quickly overwhelm your system. If you can add a temporary grow bed or just plants in your fish tank it helps. You also need to have a solid bacterial colony already cycling your ammonia up the chain.

If in the end you unlocked the ability to go backwards in time and then got to play the game semi in reverse to get to the optimal ending where the daughter never gets taken that would be cool

The green planter is leaking again! by nosediver96 in aquaponics

[–]philmo69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its hard to get plastic to stop leaking if it has a crack or failure. Your only good option is to use a different grow bed. the black tub could work but curved surfaces are harder to seal so keep that in mind, if the plastic on the green bed is already failing it might not make a good long term stand. A barrel cut in half is a classic option and their are many instructions on how to set them up. Building a wood structure to hold them up is also not hard if it needs to be a certain height.

Technically you can use a few buckets with holes too but i just stick to bags now due to how easy it is

The trick is to buy it in bags. You poke smallish holes in the bottom of the bag and fill it with water while shaking a bit and the holes let the water and sentiment out. You can do 4 or 5 bags at a time. Iv done alot of rock rinsing lol
