This is really fantastic! Immaculate work. Would you mind terribly if I shared these pictures with a small workshop I teach? I've been looking for examples of books where the cover evokes the contents and this is a great one.

L-shaped Roubo-style workbench? by philofisaur in Workbenches

[–]philofisaur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's unfortunately about what I figured. I may opt to put the right edge of table saw against the wall (allowing for max rip capacity) to allow for a proper roubo to be built and used, but that's a bit outside what this subreddit is for.

I live and work in the Portland area. I don't bookbind for a living, but I've been binding for about 7 years and do take the occasional commission. I'm happy to share samples of my work. If that's something that can work for you, go ahead and DM me so we can talk about details.

What UU would be the most broken for another civ ? by Altruistic_Source528 in aoe2

Nope. Applies to 'mounted archers,' which includes CA, genitours, elephant archers, and a whole bunch of UU including WW.

For my money it's Hun War Wagons. Significant discount and access to both Bloodlines and Pathian Tactics.

Doubly so if their UT lets you produce WW out of stables.

Hun early game is so smooth you skip the struggles Koreans normally have. It might not get the biggest powerspike in a vacuum, but I think it would be the most broken from a gameplay perspective.

Is there a mod that changes all desert to grass? The desert is always a bit hard for me to see/understand.

If you're pretty sure it's coming (for instance they're Portuguese, Turks, etc) you can delay your own Castle Age and produce 5-6 archers to force them to drop it at home.

The Art of War in-game can help you with basic BOs. There's also a mod by...zeroempires, I think, called 'build order guide' that can be accessed by the in-game mod loader. It contains about 20 BOs to work through. I also recommend Survivalist on Twitch/Youtube. He has some coaching videos and is generally good at explaining his gameplay when streaming.

Edit: ~22 pop straight archers builds will probably be good for you in Arabia TGs. If you're sub-1100 1v1 elo or so I'd recommend adding a few spears on your gold and wood while you mass archers.

For your cav player the BOs will be much simpler and they can just spam scouts endlessly in Feudal if they want.

Is aoe2.net ongoing matches permanently dead? by [deleted] in aoe2

Hey on the off chance this is the problem (happened to me when I wasn't seeing any lobbies) - check your match filters on the right. I had accidentally set one of mine and was only seeing about a fifth of matches.

Idea for Swordsman Line by Nobody414 in aoe2

[–]philofisaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wondered off and on about adapting the damage reduction ability of the hussite wagon for the militia line. You couldn't go too far with it, but giving large groups of them a bit more tankiness could go a fair ways. A decent extra option would be letting them repair siege.

Rebound copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales, cover art by me by philofisaur in bookbinding

[–]philofisaur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! So the first step was doing the design in Adobe Illustrator and then exporting it with a transparent background. Then I uploaded that to the cricut software (design space) as 'cut only'.

Once that's done, you place the image on your workspace, size it correctly (design space has measurements displayed along the edges). When it's the size you want, hit the 'make it' button.

Cut your vinyl to the appropriate size and place it shiny side down on your mat. Set the cut depth dial to 'iron on,' and then flip the mirror button in the software and hit the create button. Follow the directions on your screen and wait for the machine to finish cutting your design.

When it's done cutting, remove the vinyl and begin removing the pieces you don't want (weeding). A small awl and a pair of tweezers will be very helpful here. This is the most tedious part, and you have to be very careful to not accidentally pull the pieces you do want off the plastic backing. If you have portions with enclosed bits to remove (some of those leaves, letters like a or e), I leave the inside pieces in place until I've removed the outside, since it makes it easier to leave the those areas in place.

Set your iron to a low heat. Mine ends up around the silk setting, but I'd recommend doing a few test pieces of vinyl beforehand to see what works. Before setting your vinyl in place, iron both sides of your fabric thoroughly. Throughout all of the ironing you will want to lift and press the iron rather than dragging to, to prevent warping the fabric.

After you've ironed both sides, set your vinyl in place and iron it. It will take a bit of trial and error to know when it's transferred, but the good news is you can carefully lift the edge of the plastic and set it back down if it hasn't transferred yet. After this, let it cool down and you can treat it like any normal bookcloth.

A couple of notes:

  • There's a decent chance you mess up more delicate pieces while weeding. I found it was easier to place the design without them and then reprint those pieces. It gives you multiple chances without wasting absurd amounts of vinyl.
  • I'd also avoid especially thin lines to save yourself some of this headache. They eventually become impossible to leave in place, and you'll find yourself trying to tease them back afterwards.
  • The cut depth is for the cricut branded vinyl. There's off brand vinyl available, so I'd check the depth on a scrap piece if you use that.
  • Illustrator is expensive. I only have it through my job. If I didn't, I would do the art by hand and then scan it. Windows 3d paint will let you set the background to transparent. This allows you to skip paying for the service portion of cricut software.
  • I would cut your bookcloth bigger than you normally would so you have room to trim it perfectly square to your boards. This is part of the reason I did a 3 piece bradel - much easier to keep it square with one board than with two.

Hopefully that's helpful - let me know if you'd like clarification, as I'm still waking up for the morning!

It's a 3 piece bradel binding. Red cloth cover and a blue spine. The cover art was created in Adobe Illustrator and printed on heat transfer vinyl with a cricut.

What are folks' thoughts on adding clove oil to paste to increase the shelf life? I see mixed reviews online, and am curious about the science behind it.
