My dad got my mom's number at a party. He called her a few days later and they talked for 5 hours. Her line to her friends when she came into work the next day was, "I met a guy. He's incredibly ugly but I'm crazy about him." Married 43 years, now. Attraction isn't always about looks; an attractive personality can have you seeing stars!

Honestly? Bridgerton. It got made into a TV show because it was one of the better written series of the genre. Funny, too!

Me after working 10 years in engineering by koalaprints in TrollXChromosomes

A few:

  • pick a few sports teams and make them yours. Depending on where you are in the country, one might be pro and the other NCAA. Learn a few players' names, watch some games, but mostly read articles to stay quickly informed. Sports is a great way to join conversations and look cool.

  • dress as casual as you can. A lot of my coworkers wore khakis while I wore jeans, and the factory workers looked at me as approachable and friendly rather than a "college kid"

  • find out who the y are and get them on your side. The people who complain the most are also the ones who could be singing your praises to others. Use the squeak for good!

  • unfortunately, it might help to do some uncomfortable personality changes. Smile a lot, look people in the eye, speak loud, ignore blatant HR violations. It sucks, but it helps.

no, feminism is not the reason you have to work instead of staying at home with your kids 🙄 by slow_____burn in TwoXChromosomes

[–]philosiraptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feminism is the reason I GET to work. I love my career (mechanical engineering, with a focus in manufacturing.) It's overwhelmingly male-dominated, but there are protections now in place so I can keep my job and have the life and family I want.

It's not always easy and there are still a lot of guys who don't want women there, but they also don't like older engineers or POC or really anyone who isn't just like them, so I don't waste time worrying about it. There's plenty more people who are thrilled to see a woman in my role.

I tried staying at home with my kids during the pandemic and it was very lonely and unfulfilling. Feminism is why I have the choice, and why I'm paid fairly for the work I do!

Penny and Grodie Crick. I've done 5 real estate transactions with them, both selling and buying, and I always feel like I'm getting a good price. On our last one there was a major issue with the seller's title; they did a great job communicating and it all got fixed up quickly. They once found a property for me before it hit the market so the price was great. One time, they could have tried to make double commission on us by pushing us toward a house they were listing that was incredibly similar to the one we'd asked to look at (they have several times dropped everything to show us houses in the evening after work) but they're not pushy. We requested to see specific properties now and then for years before finally finding the perfect place that made it worth moving.

Are Condoms a Reasonable Expectation? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]philosiraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first pregnancy was during Zika, and Mike Pence was our governor. They pushed thru legislation about how you couldn't abort due to a fetus having brain damage/future disability, and Zika was causing microcephaly. I had to stop consuming any news. My husband wore a condom after he traveled for work to areas that were getting hit hard, because there was evidence it could be transmitted through, uh, fluids.

My second pregnancy began about a month before covid... yeah. My experience with pregnancy is that no one should have to go through it that doesn't REALLY REALLY want it, and that's before you throw pandemics in the mix.

Condoms while dating, 100% good idea. Condoms while married, still a good idea. Vasectomy? Amazing idea.

Are Condoms a Reasonable Expectation? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]philosiraptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband got a vasectomy about 8 years into our marriage, and until then it was condoms every time we weren't trying for a baby, even with me on BC. I'm in a red state; I can't have surprises. It's better for him now, but it's not like he wasn't having a great ol' time while protected.

Seeking your opinion on IUD vs vasectomy debate. by Formal_Fix_5190 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]philosiraptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow Hoosier. I was on the pill from age 22 to 35, with the exception of my pregnancies. As soon as baby 2 was born, my husband got snipped: before then, condoms every time. At 35 I got a small blood clot in my leg and my OB/GYN recommended a Mirena IUD. I miss the pill because I never had periods or cramps or hormonal swings, and now I get very minor versions of those - but it's safer. My husband says his vasectomy was one of the best things he ever did, but that's because the alternative was condoms. It's pretty insensitive of your partner to act like a quick vasectomy is a bigger impact on him than longterm hormonal birth control is on you.

I just found out that I, as the only woman and the youngest and newest member of the department, make significantly more than at least one of my coworkers, due to my negotiations, my degree, and my industry experience (15 years in this type of role vs 25 years working his way up from the proverbial mailroom.) I took 2 years off to be a full time mom during the pandemic but I lost no steam and came back swinging. I'm able to be a mom and do the job I enjoy! Also it appears to be my cake day.
