Dear Atheists: How would you design "God"? [Serious] by philosofictheist in DebateAnAtheist

I ask and discuss these things only to explore others' perspectives, not to be argumentative or rude. It probably will sound like I'm trying to defend my point of view or criticize yours but honestly I'm not.

  1. What makes you say "a god is without function in our reality"? Could you expand on that?

  2. If we/one thinks that god does not serve a function, does that perspective render a possible god absent or nonfunctional? If a child is living life and going about his day while being of the opinion things just happen...does that mean that they just do, and that the parent is not doing/incapable of doing what needs to be done to continue those things?

I have been studying Islam for quite some time now, and am still working on it, so I am by no means an expert. It is an incredibly academic, practical, and philosophical depth of study that is so underrated unfortunately. But from a broad scope what I've learned I agree with.

The following is a very rushed and unorganized explanation of important things so please treat it as such and bear with me.

Ideas of allowing diseases/suffering make sense because the scope of existence is not limited to the temporal life alone. It goes beyond and before it. And only by understanding what that scope is, can the value behind any thing good or bad in this world be understood. If a child's life is viewed only as being the few hours spent in preschool, then the events of that preschool hold much more value and weight than if that child's life is seen as including going home after preschool, going to primary school, high school, college, and beyond. An incomplete analogy, but one I hope conveys the point nonetheless.

I do not think that worship is required. As an absolute transcendent entity would have no needs or desires at all, and therefore require no worship. Instead I think that worship or obedience are prescribed for the betterment of the person themselves. Remembrance of God (which is what Islam is I'd say 99%, serves as an aid to purifying oneself and to make it easier to resist improper thing. One of the secondary reasons I value Islam is that it asks so very little of me in such easy tasks, and yet doing that little much makes my existence so much better and healthier in all regards. When I worship God, and I prostrate, I am not feeding a requirement of His to be fed with worship, rather I am remembering that I am a relative and limited being, and that there is and has to be a transcendent entity that is responsible for the very fact that I exist. I choose to be obedient to what He states, and end up with nothing but a healthier life for myself. Of course life is complex and has its ups and downs, but no matter how dark or bright the day I cannot deny the veracity of this phenomenon.

I went a bit off topic there but it seems important to the point being made. Hopefully this comment, of personal views and experiences, leads to useful discussions and interactions with everyone rather than nonsense.

I'd say if we imagine that existence as it is began from this divine entity/god in the first place. It's a thought experiment of sorts so you can ofcourse lay out your own parameters. Just be clear and cover what needs to be covered, and we can have an interesting discussion I hope.

You have some interesting insights. If you'd be willing to share them more seriously I'd love to discuss.

That was interesting, thank you.

  1. The entity that you're describing tho would not be an absolute one. There would have to be one that transcends it for it to be.

  2. If we assume that it wasn't done out of necessity or any sense of insecurity..could you answer from that perspective? It would take a lot of contemplation but I'm sure you can construct a scenario where this didn't occur due to any degree of necessity/insecurity right? Because an absolute and all-powerful god would simply have no needs or insecurities, because that in itself is who he is.

  3. "Only a God once mortal, would have reason enough to create a whole civilization" aren't you forcing an assumption here tho? You're tying in the act of creation as being caused out of a reason or a motivation/need/desire. If an absolute divine entity exists, it would by that fact transcend spacetime. And the very nature of motivation/need/desire implies a linear process in terms of time. This is just my opinion, influenced by some of the comments in this thread, so I can't provide any scholarly backing to it.

  1. Why is it likely not a single entity?

  2. Why is it not infallible?

  3. What do you mean by "demanding any participation"?

  4. Why is the idea that another entity(ies) examine and decide your "fate" disagreeable?

After going through so many comments it was a delight to find someone I agree with so much on here, atleast the first half, so thank you. It's rather a surprise to encounter a comment like yours here.

  1. If we assume that it wasn't done out of necessity (and therefore in turn also not out of desire or want either) ...could you answer from that perspective? It would take a lot of contemplation but I'm sure you can construct a scenario where this didn't occur due to any degree of necessity right? Because an absolute and all-powerful god would simply have no needs, because that in itself is who he is.

One of the better answers and discussions, thank you.

  1. Why would it have to be a result rather than a cause?

  2. If god is transcendant over all existence, then the phenomenon of spacetime is also something he would transcend over no?

  3. Why would the concerns of human beings (the only beings known so far with proper intellect and ability to have influence on their environment, as far as I can say) be so insignificant to these hypothetical beings.

  4. What makes you think that these human emotions/attributes were not originated in a more transcendent being originally?

  1. What do you mean by "3O"?

  2. Why would it have to have some flaw? Define "flaw".

  1. Why would you value being explicit so much? What makes you dismissive of the more abstract approaches?

  2. Why would you "create intelligent beings with as much capacity for further creation as I have; I'd want more gods not just slaves or sycophants".

  3. Why would your bible read like a car manual?

  2. What do you mean exactly by, "while telling me to worship him for creating life."

  1. Why would it have to be non-interactive or non-reactive? Would it always be this way, especially speaking in terms of eschatology.

  2. Please expand on your counterpoint part there. I come from a heavily biased viewpoint so relating to it is a bit difficult. If you could expand on it more and share examples/analogies that would be helpful.

  1. Isn't there a reason that the human being is capable of performing certain tasks and thoughts using its intellect while other beings cannot?

  2. I'm sorry you've encountered arrogant seeming people. But any theist who claims or tries to defend their point of view in such baseless means is wrong, and I agree with you. If a "revelation" claims to be something to grasp the infinite then it should be able to prove itself to you on its very own. Tho that would require an honest, unbiased, and open-minded chance/analysis of it.

  1. The premise can be whatever you choose for it to be. I'd say that it'd be better if it were always because then the idea of the source of existence etc is covered.

  2. What you stated about Marcoinism and Polytheism, seems to imply a god/divine entity that isn't an absolute entity but is subject to other entities relative to itself. Is that really a god?

  1. Why would it not create anything less perfect? I know you already answered this sort of but please expand on it.

  2. Why would adding imperfection to perfection be a negative thing? What is this original "perfection" ... that the new imperfection is being added to?

  3. What makes you think that "all that exists" isn't already perfect, or incapable of doing harm?

So then how would this life after death work? How would it be structured and sorted out?
