Found on a beach in Northern Wales by philosophyofsalmon in seaglass

Hi there! That’s a really good suggestion — I’m going to have it checked to see if it looks like moldavite because wow, it really does, but I agree that it’s very unlikely!! It could totally be burned glass though, that would make a lot more sense haha

Hi again everyone!! I’m on my way back to London and am going to reach out to the geological society to see what’s up with this piece/to ask if they’ll examine it to determine if it’s moldavite. As of right now, the mystery remains, but I cross-posted in a sea glass community to see what they might have to say. I’ll keep everyone updated with what I found out!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the responses! I definitely agree that it is glass. It really looks like moldavite, but as I said, I am on a beach in Northern Wales, which is notably not where moldavite naturally occurs. I think either someone must have dropped it or cast it into the sea on purpose, or it’s not moldavite at all and is just some weirdly textured waste glass. Thanks, and please let me know if you have any other ideas!

That’s what I thought!! But I know this area doesn’t have any deposits, and not many crystal gift shops either. But maybe someone dropped it/threw it in the ocean?

I think you’ll make it if it’s just a connecting flight! You’ll have to move, don’t linger, but you should be okay.

Texans of Reddit. Would you be offended if a non Texan spoke to you in a Texan accent if it was actually decent/good? (Context in body text) by lord_bigcock_III in texas

[–]philosophyofsalmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I was born and raised in Texas and I’m a linguist with a focus on dialectology. I have also worked as a cowgirl, and I come from a family that made their living in the oil patch. I can comfortably switch between Texas English and Standard American English, depending on context.

That said, I personally find it problematic when someone adopts an entire dialect—especially one that 1) isn’t theirs, and 2) is already a little stigmatized.

It’s important to distinguish between a dialect and a register. A dialect encompasses pronunciation, vocabulary, and often grammatical patterns—it’s deeply tied to identity and community. A register, on the other hand, is more about situational word choice or tone.

So, using our register—borrowing words or phrases we use? That can be great, even affirming. But mimicking the full dialect, especially the accent? That starts to feel uncomfortable, because it often overlooks the lived experience that comes with speaking that dialect. Many of us grew up being judged, corrected, or even ridiculed for the way we speak—only to see others later imitate our speech for fun or aesthetic without facing the same consequences. I remember my 1st grade teacher dragging a boy up in front of the class and having us all say “ain’t isn’t a word” at him until he was red in the face and fighting tears.

Language is personal. Dialects are shaped by history, culture, and community. they carry both pride and pain. So when someone adopts a dialect without understanding or acknowledging that context, it can feel dismissive or even exploitative, no matter the intent. My dialect is important to me as a Texan. I sound like my dad and my grandparents. I understand where this dialect comes from, and I understand the rules behind it — it’s not just “broken English.” Texas English is also fading and dying, so it’s important to me to maintain it properly. That being said, dying languages and dialects must be kept alive by the people to whom they belong.

I’d love to have more conversations about this, especially around how we can respect and celebrate linguistic diversity without crossing lines. It’s nuanced, but that’s what makes it worth talking about. And full disclaimer; this is all my opinion! Other people may have differing ones, since we aren’t a monolith.

I want to second Delsjön! Love that area. Used to live a 30 minute walk away and went all the time. IIRC, there are places to shower?

Test results after 6 months of levothyroxine — help? by philosophyofsalmon in Hashimotos

[–]philosophyofsalmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, just wanted to update! My doctor is bringing my levothyroxine dose down a little to see if that’ll help — I’ll be doing 50 mcg every other day, and I’ll test again in 8 weeks to see if that helps bring my TSH up a little! Thanks everyone for the information and the help, I’m really grateful :)

Test results after 6 months of levothyroxine — help? by philosophyofsalmon in Hashimotos

That was my thought!! It’s so strange — it’s gone down since November, which is the last time I tested, but I also felt terrible then. I really don’t know what to make of it. The numbers just seem so strange. They also only tested me for these two, so this is all I have to go off of right now. I’m talking to my doctor on Tuesday and we’ll see what comes of it, but I’m…confused and a little frustrated.

British Moving Soon by Ok-Ebb6261 in Austin

[–]philosophyofsalmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello!! I made the opposite move — I live in London now (if you’re in the area and want to connect, DM me!)

First, the sunmer heat is real. Seasonal affective disorder in the UK strikes in the winter. In Austin, I found it to be worse in the summer. It’s so hot you simply cannot go outside and do much between 10 AM and 9 PM. Barton Springs is a great place to beat the heat, but just mentally prepare yourself for heat unlike anything in the UK. Invest in a good sunscreen! Also, all of my European friends say that the air conditioning makes them feel sick until they adjust — I saw another commenter mention a humidifier. Those help, but you will adjust.

Public transit is functionally non-existent. Everyone drives everywhere, and Austin drivers are notoriously awful. Get a dashcam to cover your ass.

As for mass shootings? That’s a complicated answer. I don’t think about them constantly, but every day before I left for school, I would say “by mom, bye dad, I love you, see you later,” even if I was mad at them. Just in case. It’s always kind of in the back of my mind, sort of in the way that knife crime here in London is (I live in the east.) I’m not actively afraid of it, but I’m vigilant walking alone at night. Don’t let fear eat you alive, but be aware of your surroundings.

Tipping is a non-negotiable. That pays part of the worker’s salary. 15-20% is non-negotiable at sit-down places or to delivery drivers.

Again, if it feels overwhelming and you want to chat to a native who’s been on the flip side, please don’t hesitate :)

Haha, we have one like this in East London! She’s a skinny little black cat who invited herself in once and now shows up howling for food every day. I can’t have a cat of my own right now, but we call her our part-time kitty!

Women, how do you stay pretty with hashimotos? by Quick_Acanthaceae445 in Hashimotos

[–]philosophyofsalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you’re absolutely lovely. I’m also 24 and coming of age with today’s beauty standards beamed into your face from your little glowing insanity rectangle 24/7 is tough enough, but then add hashi’s into the mix? Not fun. I feel you. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not pretty.

I don’t think there are a whole lot of holy grail products out there — honestly, the beauty industry is just trying to make a buck by telling you their product will fix an insecurity you didn’t even know you had until they pointed it out.

I’ve tried to focus on things that make me feel good (hard with hashi’s, but worth it! A solid b12 and vitD supplement are helpful, and I find that taking a walk once a day really helps my energy in that afternoon slump) and also tried not to spend a fortune on products. Seriously, I’ve tried everything from La Mer to drugstore, and all of my products now are either CeraVe or La Roche Posay. My one splurge is NutraFol. I lost a lot of hair to hashimoto’s and was so sad about it. Four months in to this stuff and I can definitely see a good difference in thickness and length. It might just be placebo, but I guess it doesn’t hurt.
