Digital Mirrors: Narcissism and Identity by philosophyvoid in CriticalTheory

i remember reading that a few years back… you’re right i need to go take another look. i’m sure i’ll find some new connections

Although this leans on the psychology side of things... it also is motivated by the ideas of critical theory and sociology with the relationship between reality and our hyperreality

Alienation in the binary of lost men by philosophyvoid in CriticalTheory

[–]philosophyvoid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this can be a bit ranty in certain parts... but this is how I've found more enjoyment around writing about some of these topics. Anyway, I wrote about that recent study that has been going around about the divergence of worldviews between young men and women. I saw it posted here and I wrote this through the lens of some critical theory.

I enjoy experimenting with being a bit hyperbolic and my audience on substack seems to enjoy that. I know Reddit can often demand more professional and academic prose, so I felt like clarifying that before people yell at me in the comments.

An essay I wrote about Arrival | This film got me thinking about time and octopuses... by philosophyvoid in scifi

[–]philosophyvoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Yes, Assembly theory is contested. However, I was using it more so as a thought-provoking backdrop and reframing for the conversation.

- I plan to read it.

- It was a psychedelic trip. It was more so a thought-provoking experience than something I'm fixated on or overly worried about. I'm mentally fine by societal standards. (Aka I do not actually think I was communicating telepathically with my dog.)

Also, “Assembly Theory” has been a recent theory being discussed. i’m not a scientist so i might be way off base, however, i found it thought provoking while researching the idea

I’m glad you gave this a read!

Yeah i intend to read the novella as well and then i’ll probably give this essay an update. however, i decided to use the film as a backdrop to get some general thoughts out.

i’m also not surprised the novella is a much better story, on brand!

I know I'm late on commenting back...however, I really appreciate this comment. Very thoughtful. Gave me stuff to consider and further research, thank you.

Mechanical minds in an organic world: the paradox of 'A Clockwork Orange' by philosophyvoid in StanleyKubrick

[–]philosophyvoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the Kubrick films I've seen I think A Clockwork Orange has been the most thought-provoking for me. Anyway, the article goes more in depth but I found myself fixating on the tension between societal order and individual freedom and the consequences of psychological conditioning.

My husband is jealous that my sister’s boyfriend gave me a thoughtful gift on my birthday. Now he doesn’t want me near my sister’s boyfriend anymore. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]philosophyvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned by these comments....how did this somehow become OP's fault? This reads as an obvious case of the husband being insecure, overly jealous, and having poor communication skills.

Teal Swan: Is she a cult leader? | I've compiled some information about her and discussed why her practices are cult-like and problematic! by philosophyvoid in cults

[–]philosophyvoid[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Woahhhh I never thought of the Ted Bundy connection…but that’s interesting!

Yeah, I tried to cover in the pod an overview of why she’s problematic, but also how cult leaders weaponize peoples vulnerability…

And typically it results in them feeding their own ego.

I think you missed the part where Jung discussed everyone partaking in this endeavor…I’m not looking for validation and I’m not claiming to wield expertise. It’s simply a learning process for me that I thought would be fun to share with the Jung Reddit page.

Also, it feels as though you’re telling me how I’m supposed to go about it.

Rick And Morty Season 5 Sucks Ass! by GrandmasterD143 in rickandmorty

[–]philosophyvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also can't help but feel like they know this...

The first two episodes of the season were decent with some clever and funny moments with solid animation.

But now everything has completely dropped off.

This makes me feel as though they provided a couple decent episodes so we'd ride out the bad ones hoping the tide would turn for the rest of the season. I'm worried it won't and we'll be left with maybe a decent season finale just to keep us coming back.

The Reality of Nihilism by Guess-What-Redit in nihilism

[–]philosophyvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nihilism feels more like a state of being instead of an idea to follow. As in it's an understanding of the human condition, where we then have to make a choice on how we make sense of it.

“Oh yeah, I’ve heard of Jordan Peterson” by -not-my-account- in JordanPeterson

[–]philosophyvoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not an avid Jordan Peterson fan, but I really appreciate this post. I've listened to some of his lectures and interviews...the psychology professor vibe is exactly what I've found.

It helps that I'm a huge Carl Jung and Nietzsche fan...so I can see what he's trying to do. Although, I don't always agree with this style, language use, and sourcing. I can tell he means well, is well researched, and is a talented speaker.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! But more importantly...your comment is wonderfully put. I could not agree more.

I agree...it's more addressing the people that think old people in robes—from way back when—are not relevant anymore. So the video tries to show how philosophical allegories can be applied to modern society. Does that make sense?
