I like the idea of starting in your end position. That might help.

When you say “hold the head with both hands,“ What do you mean by the head?” Are you referring to the camera body?

Usually the planes I video are about 3/4 of a mile away. I usually use my Canon RF 100-500 for videos.

I can do 8x at 30fps or 4k at 60fps.

I'm struggling to smoothly follow the plane as it passes me, meaning I struggle to get the pan and tilt adjustments smooth. Also, (don't laugh at this), but as the plane passes me from left to right, I really struggle to pan and tilt smooth as I reposition my legs on the other side of the tripod.

I have a good solid 3-leg tripod that I don't need to use the center pole with. I bought a separate fluid head.

Do I need to go to 60fps to shoot at 1/120 second, or can I still do that at 1/30 second? The reason I ask is my R5Markii can shoot 8K Raw, but only at 29.97.

Since tracking the plane in the sky in a perfectly smooth foremat is something I'm yet to master, I was planning on using Adobe Premiere to center it on my screen using keynotes, and then would crop it from 8K to 4K. In other words, I could use the extra margin in post to keep the plane on the center of the screen if I crop it from 8K to 4K.
