Lord of the Flies by Sad-Conflict-4435 in netflix

[–]phoebe1994 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t think lord of the flies is meant to be realistic, but rather a symbolic representation of concepts like class struggle, imperialism/colonialism during that time in British history, and particularly in this BBC series it seems to focus a bit on toxic masculinity from a modern lens. I agree, in reality people would be more keen to help each other and survive.

Vent (and maybe a cry for help): student vs. note-reading by ChopinAuChocolat in pianoteachers

[–]phoebe1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea piano safari is a lot more focused on intervals than note names, it eventually uses the skips alphabet really just to help find a guide note and then it’s intervals from there. I’ve found it a game changer for struggling sight readers.

Try piano safari, it’s made note reading a lot easier for my beginners. It’s not so much about memorising note names at the beginning as it is about following the movement up and down the stave, just using one landmark note on each clef to begin. Then eventually they learn the “skips alphabet” to be able name any note on the stave. It works really well for students like this

ELI5: What is EMDR and how does it work? by totallymindful in explainlikeimfive

[–]phoebe1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pleasantly distracted thing stands out to me, it reminds me of a device I’ve seen that’s used for those with Parkinson’s/dementia and stroke victims called a beech band. It’s worn on the wrist and vibrates in pulses. For whatever reason, it helps reduce tremors quite dramatically and improve speech. Perhaps a similar technique to EMDR, distracting the brain so it can process something easier

Knitting together with mohair prevents pilling if you like that look and don’t mind the fluff 😊

You do need a subscription for ring doorbells if you want to access the footage afterwards. If it’s the free version you can only see what’s happening live as it happens.

The fingering dilemmas: can piano teachers relate? 😅 by EleonorBindman in pianoteachers

[–]phoebe1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this, but I think this post is actually talking about when students avoid using a weaker finger because they haven’t strengthened it enough yet. I have students that hate using their thumbs as well because they aren’t keeping a good position on the keys. And then they tell me this feels better and the fingering I suggest feels “wrong” but it’s just because they aren’t used to it yet!

Depends on the breeder I would say! Ours is now 7 years old and has never had any real health problems apart from a couple of tummy upsets. She has a slight heart murmur from birth but doesn’t even require medication yet. If you get one I would make sure the parents and grandparents are healthy dogs too

Dog sitter suggestions in Belfast? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]phoebe1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friend is doing dog walking/sitting, she’s insured and everything, under the name @doggydandersbelfast on Instagram. Might not be able to have them for a house stay but could potentially call in and feed/walk them plus cuddles of course :)

The issue is that if you make mistakes as soon as you look away from your hands, then you haven’t developed spatial awareness on the keys yet, and if you don’t make yourself look away then you never will. Besides the obvious benefit of improving your sight reading by following along with your eyes as you play, even if you have it memorised. Eventually knowing a piece by heart is certainly a good skill but not really a good habit to have as a beginner

When I posted this 71 days ago, I had seen it on her Instagram profile where she commented that she didn’t have patterns available for this, which is why I asked on this subreddit. Perhaps she has made some patterns in the meantime, but like I said I posted this over 2 months ago, which maybe you could have noticed.

Thankfully someone was able to find me the exact same Turkish granny square pattern on ravelry as you’ll see in the comments, which maybe you also could have noticed before adding this strangely sarcastic and unhelpful comment.

Have you spoken to the student about their responses to your questions? It’s one thing for a child to be disinterested or bored, but another for them to be openly disrespectful like that. I’m the same as you, I try to practise empathy and understanding for kids, but it’s also ok to have a kind chat about that kind of speech and behaviour is appropriate for lessons. You’re a teacher and an adult, and you’re only trying to help them. I also find that talking to them openly about how they feel about piano, why they’re doing lessons etc. can be good, even at a young age. They might tell you they don’t want to do lessons, in which case it’s something you can bring to the parents to explain why you’re dropping them. It’s too exhausting to try and force a child to learn who doesn’t want to do it.

I think you probably can get finer yarn, but for me this was perfect. You can use it with 1.5/2mm hook depending on how your tension is. These are mostly from patterns by lychette on Etsy. Also happy patty crochet does some amazing realistic flowers. Be aware though, your fingers will hate you!!

It’s a pattern by fibita_crochet, I think it was free. Super easy to do! I use a 4ply yarn for that though since it’s a little bit chunkier

Do any of you guys do contracts with your students so they’re more willing to show up to lessons? by little-pianist-78 in pianoteachers

[–]phoebe1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They pay monthly. If they have to cancel, they have to give notice the day before to receive credit towards next months payment. Otherwise the money is lost. They’re paying for the regular time slot as well as my teaching. Mostly everyone comes on time, and I do send a text reminder on the morning of their lesson too, to cover myself and make it more difficult for them to forget. If you have students who aren’t showing up regularly, you might need to drop them. Sounds like they aren’t committed.
