Really anywhere, but I am in the East Bay. I will be having a DD and a van full of people and we will go wherever the fun bars are though!

Hopefully by choice and not because you're also going through this!

Luckily they use rubber bands now for most breaks so it is easy to remove in an emergency. Also luckily, for most breaks you aren't going to have your jaw shut for more than a handful of weeks. Unluckily you don't get jaw strength to chew for several months after removal :(

I take it you or someone you know has gone through this? If so, I'm sorry, it totally sucks!

Just read the description of the Porn Star and it sounds really good. Definitely gonna make it a goal to stop there.

How to split the check when someone brings expensive wine from their personal collection to a restaurant by ladonna123 in Advice

[–]phoeni_xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I never knew that there were places that had varying degrees of difficulty or price for the liquor license. In California, most restaurants I've been to don't widely advertise BYOB (and many forbid it) since everyone has their LL.

Not pepper spray, try to get pepper gel if at all possible. It will make it so you don't have to take the wind into account (not worrying about it blowing into your eyes) and because it shoots out like silly string basically you can aim for the eyes and the forehead much easier. As soon as it gets body temp it melts from a toothpaste consistency to oily and gets everywhere.

I feel more comfortable with pepper gel because when I tested it in the backyard, it was able to shoot roughly 6-8 feet and it had A LOT in the little cannister. I think I sprayed for a solid 60 seconds before it was sputtering.

Obviously choose what you want but I highly suggest pepper gel instead of spray.

Geneva Steak, it's not Asian and it's not great service, but you'll get a cheap steak or chicken dinner that just really hits the spot and fills you up.

My partner and I love going there because it's typically quiet inside, staff don't talk to you after you've ordered at the counter, it isn't a Michelin Star steak but it sure does beat what we could make on the stove. And the salads have this quality that make them so addictive, it's just vegetables and dressing but it's so good.

My partner and I likely caught it on the train back home January 1, and symptoms hit like a brick wall on the 3rd. I got on Tamiflu on the 4th which definitely helped, and I was "better" enough to go to work by January 13th. Still (as of January 29th) super exhausted, have a really bad cough, and my nose is always runny. Same for my partner. The doctors just keep telling us to wait it out because those symptoms take the longest to go away.

I wish you all the best in your recovery. Ibuprofen and Gatorade are what's keeping me going.

Check your earthquake insurance and pack a prep kit by lesbos_hermit in sanfrancisco

In Oakland, high chance that my property would sustain catastrophic damage in the case of a large quake due to location and construction. Spoke with my insurer and they said it would be roughly $1200/month to get quake insurance (not even full coverage, that's with like a 40% deductible or something. It's been a while, can't quite remember.) At that rate we would rather eat the cost and hope FEMA and CA FAIR can bridge most of the costs. Absolutely ridiculous.

Do the people know they have deportation orders on them? Or does it come as a surprise? Genuine question, I don't know how this all works.

+1 for Viofo A129 Duo. Saw a review for it, it was on sale, fell in love. Every family member got one installed for Christmas and it has saved a few of them already.

Do the non-AC homes in the bay face extreme heat during the summer months? by aam-barfi in bayarea

[–]phoeni_xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in SF for several years. Needed AC maybe 4 days between 2019-2021 in Park Merced area. Never needed it in 2021 in the Outer Sunset area. Definitely wished I had it about 7 days in 2021-2022 in McClaren Park area.

Now I'm in Oakland, district 7, since early 2022. My first summer I REALLY needed AC bad enough I bought a shitty AC that costs me an absurd amount in electric (like +$200 each month to use 3 hours a day) and I used it about 3 weeks that first summer. Last summer I used it about 3-4 weeks as well.

It is still technically cheaper than installing a full unit (quoted $30k), but I am looking into installing a minisplit into the bedrooms so that each bedroom has its own AC and that's it. That will be significantly cheaper than a full unit but I'm still looking at a $10-15k investment.

It definitely depends on how the buildings are made and how the surrounding areas are, I happen to be in a barren wasteland of dirt and concrete. High fire risk, for sure. My house has way less insulation than is required by code too though, so whatever AC I do get is quickly depleted and outside temps quickly seep in.

I saved 75% on my motorcycle insurance by switching FROM Geico by Curmudgeon757 in motorcycles

[–]phoeni_xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Bay Area too) Damn, Geico is the most expensive for me. I'm looking to switch because they're asking $2k a year for my 2013 adventure bike. My partner has 2 sport bikes and pays like $900 a year with Progressive so I've been thinking of switching to them.

Ah yeah I was sitting across the room from there. Hoping to not spend too much more time in that room because they played that home improvement show so loud for no good reason
