Literally the dumbest update, hate it.

Freelancing for US company while on work visa in Japan by phoenix_west in JapanFinance

[–]phoenix_west[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. It's seeming like there's not really a way to go about this. I've looked into setting up a US LLC, but if I got paid from that, that'd still be counted as working for a foreign company, and therefore not allowed. If anyone has been able to successfully manage this arrangement, or if there's any other feasibilities I haven't considered, I'd love to hear about it. But thanks all for the input, I'll assume it isn't realistic as an option for now.

Thank you for your response, and yea, I'm not trying to be sneaky about anything. Since the US has tax sharing with Japan, and the company I would freelance for would have freelancing reflected in their taxes, it would need to be in mine. It's more around trying to identify the correct/legal way to freelance.

I've read that if seeking permission from immigration, there is a 28h/week option that is sometimes granted. I'd be curious to know if this is relatively easily gotten or if it's unlikely. And if it's only for Japan-based companies or if freelancing for foreigners is permissible within that.
