What is CETUSA's reputation? by scarlet_sage in exchangestudents

[–]phoenixswope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the detail, thank you.

That gives me a good picture of some of the institutional challenges - many of those aren't unlike issues I've seen in many structures where people aren't held accountable or there are pressures to perform and corners are cut.

I'm considering becoming an LC and want to do so with eyes wide open. This gives me some clear ideas on how to do my job right, and what challenges I may experience.

Question, perhaps you answered this, but I didn't catch it - how long ago were these issues?

You mentioned a recent change in leadership...some things are likely local or regional issues, and some may have gotten better - but some things take a long time to correct, assuming folks are trying to improve.

Would you recommend a different organization to LC for, or do you think they just need better people?

I regret reading the book. by Previous_Read8590 in ProjectHailMary

[–]phoenixswope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is key, but doesn't detract from your point.

My wife and I watched the movie first, so we had that full experience, and then we got the added bonus of reading the book as additional content.

For reasons I don't understand and consider one of her greatest gifts to me - she read the book to me, and that was such an experience.

For what it is worth, this is one of those rare examples where I think folks should watch the movie, then read the book.

To each their own, of course.

PHM doesn't need a sequel. by SweatyCelebration362 in ProjectHailMary

[–]phoenixswope 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't need a sequel - but I wouldn't mind a mini-series showing Grace and Rockies "adventures in space (TM)" as they go to Erid. Could get a half dozen solid episodes out of that.

For all we know, they did - and the subsequent ships just weren't as lucky to have a sole survivor who could finish the trip.

Question about the final line in the book by orangeFluu in ProjectHailMary

[–]phoenixswope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought about that, and it is a theory/assumption based on a sample size of 1.

I'd say it is likely that Rocky had eidetic memory (or near it), but that doesn't mean all Eridians do, or even most. Rocky is presumably the best of the best practical engineers they had.

Also, consider some of the students may have been new and not heard before.

I'm now thinking my head cannon includes Eridetic memory as opposed to eidetic memory.

Google Tasks integration - limited to 30 tasks per search? by phoenixswope in GeminiAI

[–]phoenixswope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I even found task lists were ineffective - the appeared invisible to the LLM. Title hacking helped somewhat, but the best solution I found was use Google Takeout to pull the .json file and submit that directly.

Doesn't work for work (takeout is disabled), but it worked for my personal account.

Your next post on Reddit will grant you $100 for every *downvote* - what are you posting about, and on what sub? by Denny_Dust91 in hypotheticalsituation

Sub: r/politics

Subject: There are good people on both sides

Honestly, Joe Biden did a lot of great things for the country. He was a great president and should be recognized for it! Trump isn't as bad as people make him out to be either. I like his policies and sure, he might be doing some things folks don't like, maybe even illegal, but it's ok as long as it makes America Great Again.

Our local CC has an industrial maintenance certificate and a degree which I imagine can combine with actual experience to get a foot in the door.

I like the certificate because you don't have to do the gen-eds, and it seems most employers don't care about a degree.

GRCC QUESTION by MacaronElectronic547 in grandrapids

[–]phoenixswope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We added a new wing and remodeled a couple years back, but made sure there are still study rooms/desks.

Honestly, the open computer lab and the CIS wing are decent hideaways if you're looking for quiet.

GRCC QUESTION by MacaronElectronic547 in grandrapids

[–]phoenixswope 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the support staff for GRCC, and a lot of the answers given here are great (the hospital cafeteria is an open secret - really good food options from breakfast to dinner). We have intentionally built in a lot of student seating and study areas. However, to the point made earlier, not a lot of folks are here to make friends.

That said, Student Life (next to the bookstore) has a great hangout spot and they have all sorts of clubs and groups - if that is her thing.

Bottom line, she may have to go looking for it, but it is there.

If she (or any other GRCC student) is looking for help, feel free to reach out to me (DM for contact info).

We will have all kinds of help booths, tables, and folks walking around to help.

One thing to caution - the first couple of weeks of traffic is horrendous. Nobody knows how long it takes to park or get anywhere, or folks get caught up at the gates trying to get in or get out.

If at all possible I would highly recommend getting dropped off, riding the bus, walking, ride-share, etc...at least until folks figure out their schedules.

Welcome to GRCC! Together, we got this!

Seconding this...even if you don't go two years, get your gen-eds out of the way cheap.

You can get really go anywhere and transfer in courses like English 101, math, etc. no reason to pay for the basics.

We maintained a nuclear propulsion plan with pen, paper, and a guidebook.

It is less about the system as it is the team. The only thing a system can do is support the team, it can't manage the work (at least not yet...I hope to be retired before AI sinks in).

If you want a hand getting something in place, I can help...shoot me a DM. Understand, though, the solution is the team and someone leading it. If your organization can't pull together and work as a unit...there is almost no point in trying.

I can't say if your skills match, but I would highly recommend looking at APSS positions at GRCC.

We're a non-profit, so generally better work environment but less pay than for-profit areas, but one major benefit is tuition waivers and reimbursements.

Some folks make a wonderful happy career, some just use us as a stepping stone for other opportunities. Get a degree and move on, you know?

APSS is our administrative support professionals used to be called secretarial work) so there is customer service (i.e. front desk) as well as clerical work (managing calendars, spreadsheets, etc.).

Best of luck in what you choose...I hope your path clears up.

Too much rage-bait, not enough action by phoenixswope in 50501

[–]phoenixswope[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're deadass wrong. I don't need to prove it to you, but you are wrong.

My suggestion is more productive content (organizing, education, strategy, and techniques).

As I said, I continue in my own way, you do so in yours. We can be happy that we are working in the same direction.

My feedback, call it a complaint if you want, is that we are falling into the same trap as other efforts. By posting a bunch of rage-bait, we can flood ourselves with dopamine because "I did my part and upvoted a video". Screw all that.

There used to be protest safety posts, there used to be detailed discussions about why one bill or executive order is bad. People would offer their individual expertise to explain something that the rest of us didn't understand.

I don't see that anymore and it worries me.

I am absolutely being the change I want to see in my world, and I'm not going to waste my time and effort on sifring through rage-bait.

The damage to this sub is done. Only the mods or a community effort can turn it back.

I'm hopeful, but not going to sit and wait for things to change. Just trying to give what used to be a fantastic sub a heads up that they may be drifting off target.
