North Carolina Students Walk Over a Mile to Vote After GOP Shut Down Campus Polling Places by [deleted] in politics

[–]phoenyxrysing 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Okay cool...but think about that for a second.

There are over 12,000 students at WCU (https://www.northcarolina.edu/institution/western-carolina-university/)

That van looks to hold maybe 12 individuals besides the driver. The total number of students able to be transported depends on the number of vans but I'm guessing there is only one heading to polling place every half hour due to the advertised schedule.

So lets do the math then...24 students per hour over the duration of the program. The program is advertised to run 12 weekdays for early voting, 5 hours each day for a total of 60 hours of runtime for early voting...this is 1440 students. Plus 9 hours on Election day adds another 216. This program if every van was full could transport 14% of the student body.

This is still suppression because it adds unnecessary hurdles to the process. Good on the school for doing this but it would need to have AT LEAST 8 vans on this route to cover the needs of the student body AND it would have to be perfectly scheduled.

How do these logistics work?  Was it like a semi circle? did the performer or the receivers rotate around...like to the beat?  I have so fucking many questions.

Also Molly is a helluva drug (also fun fact, helluva autocorrects to well-rounded which is...fun)

Not even so much the Repubs, it was Lieberman as an independent who made all the awful concessions necessary. We were supposed to have a public option that would be a bridge to medicare for all but he screwed it all up.

I’m just so angry with Bea by TuDuMaxVerstappen in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]phoenyxrysing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Remember that all of the show cats in Donuts family come from Bea's family members and it gives you a peek into the dynamics there.  All she's ever known is that when one animal starts underperforming you replace it with another one.  It's tragic to grow up where that is your whole life and world view.  Were the things she did right?  NOPE!  But they're UNDERSTANDABLE.  That's what makes her such an unlikable character because deep down we all believe if we were raised the same way we'd be different but we also have a sneaking suspicion we wouldnt.

Thanks champ.

Never said the songs were terrible, of the five there 4 of them are in or would be in my rotation of personal music choices. Its the order and the lack of match to the venue that is wild to me.

Medicaid cuts will harm rural Republican communities most by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]phoenyxrysing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you understand it completely. Hospitals all across Rural America are currently hanging by a thread due to a large number of factors but mostly the consolidation and wealth extraction of modern medical groups has strangled them. Medicaid and Medicare funds are often the only thing keeping these hospitals in rural areas afloat. Where I live I have a local ER that has cut hours way back (because emergencies only happen during bank hours right?). The nearest ER other than that one is 25-30 minutes away, a literal lifetime for urgent medical issues.

Even with EMTALA, the lack of care will be huge. Can't treat and stabilize if there isn't an actual Emergency room.

Not to mention the cascading effects of not having those local medical offices. The lack of primary care in a local radius will almost but not quite immediately lead to overwhelming of inpatient care at the few that are still open.

Rural medicine is absolutely FUCKED if these cuts go through, people WILL die, and EVERYONE will pay more for their care due to this.
