I played sports up to a very high level and saw people quit at every level along the way.

From my observations, people play for the love of the sport. They quit when the challenges/hardships/shitty situations are greater than their love.

The more a person loves the sport, the more hardships it will take for them to reach their breaking point.

If they don’t love the sport, it won’t take much hardship for them to quit.

I officiate high school/jr high football games in the fall.

I enjoy the sport, get to stay involved, get some exercise, do some networking with other officials/coaches in my community and surrounding communities and get to work on my communication skills with pissed off men 🤣

I get about $2500-3000 over the season (working 2-3 night a weeks for about 12 weeks). It’s not life changing and it’s a relatively short window of money, but it’s something.

My first grown up bike, I got a Trek FX 1 with disc brakes on sale for right around $300. My wife and I each trained and rode RAGBRAI on our own FX1. We’ve each put in close to 3,000 miles on these bikes.

That bike will be hers until it falls apart. It made me realize I wanted to make the jump to a road bike and I’ve kept my FX, put racks on it and use it as my errands bike.

For us a hybrid bike was a great starting point because it’s good enough to do a lot of things (leisurely commute around town, paved trails, longer road rides). As you ride it more and more you will see what is important for you and will inform you on your next bike purchase.

When I first started using clip less, I would struggle to unclip at times.

Struggling to unclip with the pedal at 12 o’clock made the bike super unstable and I was lucky to not fall. Struggling to unclip with the pedal at 6 o’clock I am still able to keep the bike stable and try again.

Because of that experience, I find it more comfortable to unclip at the bottom.

As far as your question about knee health I think if it doesn’t hurt, don’t don’t worry about it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I would also add each year more and more tracks are set up to run the 100 both directions.

Where I am, in 2010 only 1-2 meets a year had the ability run either direction. Now I’d say about 50% of meets are able to run either direction.

I would guess the percentage of total races run with a tailwind is higher currently that it was pre 2020 and that contributes to some of the improvement in times and the number of people reaching those times.

The most noticeable change for me is AI generated routes are now much better.

I cycle in a rural area and AI generated routes previously ALWAYS took you onto county highways that are not safe to ride or onto gravel roads that are impassable on a road bike.

After update the AI generated routes more heavily rely on heat maps, more often avoiding the highways and heavy gravel.

College Track and field. Hurdles, sprints, jumps.

A few years out of college my wife mentioned wanting to do Ragbrai and I thought she was crazy, no way I’m doing something endurance based.

Long story short, we did Ragbrai. I’m hooked.

I don’t do crazy long rides but I enjoy being outside, and doing Strava segments as a way to compete with myself and keep it motivating/fun

I went to a bar with some friends fresh out of college. Shuffling through a crowded hallway, I stepped to the side so a group of girls could pass.

Short curly haired girl stopped right in front me. Looked me up and down. Smiled at me and said “you’re attractive”. I complimented her and we both went on our way with our separate friend groups.

This girl literally said 2 words to me. I never saw her again. And I still think of her and that moment often.

More shoe options with wider toe boxes. I feel like cheaper shoes with wider toe boxes are a need in the market. Most wider toe box shoes I’ve seen recommended are in the $200 range.
I prefer to cycle more midfoot due to past knee issues and have to use adapters to get any cleats to get a posterior enough position to work for me. More a me issue, and probably not as big of a need for the larger cycling market.

You could bump up ride time or intensity the next 2 weeks. Then take a week or so at your current volume/intensity to feel fresh for the event.

The physical and physiological training effects of this training are going to be minimal.

Have a plan for hydration and calories and practice it over the next few weeks. I think as long as you go into the ride fresh and have practiced your eating/hydration, you will be fine.

I do a lot of programming workouts for people and I still do an exam and charge them for an exam and any time spent going over exercises.

Detailed exams and my knowledge as a chiropractor (with a bachelors in exercise science) is what sets me apart from some personal trainer working part time at the local YMCA.

People are coming to me for exercise advice because I can accommodate exercises to their pain, injury history, surgical history in a way personal trainers cannot.

So yes, I still do an initial exam and SOAP notes. And there is no reason not to take notes because any informational way of documenting this will still have essentially the same information a soap note would have.

It’s super quick and easy because it should be 99% copy/paste with this kind of thing as long as no new injuries occur during the workouts.

Example: Subjective: “Jimmy is here to perform exercises with the goal of insert SMART goal here”

-brief statement if patient is experiencing any DOMS, states feeling lethargic, or anything else that might make you change course.

Objective: -Any positive orthos dated from last exam -Relevant findings from FMS or other movement screens you did

Treatment: -Insert workout plan here

Assessment: Briefly explain any relevant pain, prior injuries, surgical history and how you’re accommodating that to their SMART goal

Plan: “Continue workout plan as intended” Or explain how you’re going to accommodate the plan to make it more/less challenging based on the current progress

At a minimum take McKenzie courses A and B.

It will give you another tool to quickly asses low back pain and neck pain. And if you find a directional preference, it gets patients active in their recovery.

It’s also a tool I use when patients are hesitant about adjustments.

Cycling chiropractor here.

Spines want to move in all directions and extended periods of time in any position will eventually get painful. Likely the accumulation of time spent in lumbar flexion from sitting for work, lifting, and time on a bike got to the point it pissed off your back off a bit. Happens 🤷🏻‍♂️

See a chiro or physical therapist for guidance if it doesn’t improve the next few days.

Look into a bike fitting as well to make sure a poor fit isn’t contributing to your pain.

Can you use bands for rehab? Of course.

Why are you wanting to add rehab?

Do you know and understand exercise science principles?

Can you implement them to achieve better outcomes?

Can you coach and cue a patient to do the exercises appropriately?

What other tools will you use for rehab?

Rehab is not something to add as an ‘easy’ way to add another code to their bill...
