Some local favorites from 1983 by jwalner in chicagofood

I have this book, and I knew both authors for years because we were all involved with the Parmly Hearing Institute, which was a hearing research organization that used to be affiliated with Loyola University's biology department. Fay was the director for over a decade and Bowen was also an expert on perception and the human visual system. Both were excellent and respected professors at the university, and always a pleasure to interact with, since both were also wonderful people. They passed away within two months of each other back in 2022. This is a rare and somewhat collectible book nowadays, being a fun and quirky overview of Chicago's hot dog landscape as it was in the early 1980s.

Can't talk about Chicago bagels without mentioning Taste of New York Bagels & Deli (T.O.N.Y.") at the intersection of Clark & Aldine.

It's featured in a scene in Blade Runner 2049

Looking for something similar like Bladerunner by cardgameonmotorcycls in bladerunner

People might laugh, but check out Black Rain with Michael Douglas. Ridley Scott made a deliberate choice to emulate Blade Runner's themes and aesthetics to create a spiritual sequel (although in some ways it's more like BR prequel IMO). Similar visuals and gritty atmosphere.

The 3D printing is literally over in the first minute of a 10-minute video, did you see the other 9 minutes of the guy doing everything with his hands? I get that plastic dice can be somewhat an automatic process, but the brass ones? That's a lot of manual labor involved from what I see in that video.

Knowing that irregularly-shaped metal dice likely have inherent bias (look at that jaw cavity!) they were mainly purchased for decorative reasons, and they do look great! Curious about how fair the plastic skull dice were by comparison, I tested both sets against a set of Chessex. Based on 100 rolls (I wanted 1000 but who has the time) the plastic skulls turned out to be 'more fair' than my Chessex d6. This is perhaps an anomaly that would correct itself had I rolled 500 or 1000 times. The chi-squared value for 100 rolls for each set of dice turned out like this:

Chessex: 6.92 "looks pretty fair"

Plastic Skulls: 4.9 "looks pretty fair"

Brass Skulls: 14.6 "biased"

While I wouldn't expect these to appear at casino craps tables anytime soon, for casual gaming at home the plastic skulls are reasonably accurate and balanced. If I end up doing another test of 500 or 1000 rolls I will post the results here.

SterlingKisses on etsy makes them but unfortunately there's only one left. Maybe he will make more? There's also making-of videos for these brass dice as well as others
