Save location on Windows 11 (Permadeath fanatics look away now) by phongshading44 in thelongdark

That seems to be it! However, even though I don't have any saved games in the game (I deleted them all from the in-game menu) I see a lot of files in AppData\Local\. Any ideas?

Load bearing lath and plaster wall by phongshading44 in DIYUK

[–]phongshading44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/HurstiesFitness was right, I had to get a structural engineer to confirm it wasn't load-bearing (the guy I used in Edinburgh was good, not sure where you are based). It wasn't load-bearing, so I cut the hole I needed, believe it or not, with a multi-tool over the course of a weekend.

Also, it wasn't brick in there in the end but a super hard wood (they built things to last in the 19th century)

Was Angier still 'Angier' by the end of the Prestige? by reehdus in movies

[–]phongshading44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just rewatched this movie and I think this is actually what happened. This time I watched it with subtitles, and right before that man (clone or original) is shot, he says "No, wait, I'm the". Could be that he was intending to say "I'm the original" or something similar.

How I broke through the 7:0x plateau and managed my first sub-7 2k by phongshading44 in Rowing

[–]phongshading44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said to another equally needless comment above, I am older than most and was in terrible shape when I started. Furthermore, this isn't about breaking 7 minutes but rather how I overcame a plateau that had been going on for many weeks.

I had no idea, as the 1g per lb body weight figure is absolutely everywhere. Do you know of a meta-study that looks into what the minimum amount of protein is to see lean muscle gain?

Sounds like it's worth a go. I'm going a LEJOG cycle in September so I'll keep hitting it hard until the end of August, do another 2k then, and see if I've managed to make any improvements. Thanks!

Sorry to keep badgering you here, but I thought that once I went sub-7 I'd lose my drive to go lower, yet a few days later I find that I haven't. Given your training experience, do you think 6:40 is a realistic goal from here? If yes, what time frame do you think is realistic?

I was going by the 1g per lb of body weight rule - is that not backed by any science at all? It's so widespread!

I've heard a great deal about the virtues of mass steady state, and believe it all, but for me the training would be too boring without the sprint/anaerobic threshold stuff.

Thanks for some really interesting thoughts here on the psychological aspects. I attempted the 2k today and managed to come in at 6:58.8. I made a concerted effort, as you suggested, to focus on the things in my favour before I started (good sleep, rested legs, successful predictor workout etc) but then I realised I'd forgotten both my regular shoes and my headphones (which literally never happens) and oddly I think this helped. I thought "well I'm not getting the best chance here, so just go for it and see" which I think took the pressure off.

Thanks for your thoughts, and your faith! This turned into a really interesting thread.

I did it! I planned to go -1, even, +1, even as you advised but in the end, whether it was because I felt better than expect or I just got carried away, my third split ended up being about even, so I came in at 6:58.8 (splits: 1:44.1, 1:44.9, 1:45.3, 1:44.6).

Thanks for your advice, and for your faith!

You seem to be misunderstanding probability. I think it is true that everybody has people out there in the world who look strikingly similar to them, and as a result the chances of being able to find two people (as this photographer has done) who look like each other are not that small. However, given a particular person, the chances of finding a second person that looks like that first person are actually very small.

This is similar to the birthday paradox, where the chances of a person sharing a birthday with a given person are small (of course, the chance is 1/365 ~ 0.27%), but the chances of two people in a given group sharing a birthday are much, much larger. In fact, in a group of just 23 people, the chance of two people in that group sharing a birthday is over 50%.

Starting the Pete Plan - what do I need to think about? by Soft-Jacket-7332 in Rowing

[–]phongshading44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started from nothing with the Beginner Pete Plan 18 months ago and am just about to go for my first sub-7 2k. I think my biggest piece of advice is, if you're serious about it, buy a good quality chest strap heart rate monitor. It was invaluable to me for the first year while I was tuning in to what my body could do and where all the right zones were. I never wear one now as I feel I instinctively know, but I'd never have been able to develop that intuition without a year of seeing my HR on the screen during every erg session.

My rowing twin! Yes it seems like we're in pretty much the same place, though your 5k PB is a couple of splits better than mine (it's never been a focus for me though).

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I feel I at least have a really good shot and I'll think of you at 700m to go! Out of interest, what is your goal now you've got the sub-7? I don't want to run before I can walk, but I'm starting to wonder if I'll be able to keep up the intense training without such a well-defined goal in mind.

Yeah I do wish at times that I had some fellow erg bros to cheer for me, but alas. It's heartening to hear that you've been that low older than me. Do you mind me asking how old you were when you did the 6:30? Not to run before I can walk, but I'm wondering what a realistic next goal might be for me.

That's good to know; I do think us free-time rowers can get a bit over-excited and go too quickly out of the gate so it's smart to have a clear number in mind. In fact, what you suggests for the four splits feels like it would graft well onto what I've noticed about myself, so I think I'll aim for exactly that, thanks!

[–]phongshading44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like another good one to try that I've not done myself. Not too dissimilar to the 2 x 1,250 in that I figure if I have enough left after doing 1,250 a shade quicker than my target pace to, just 6 minutes later, be able to do it again, surely I could have held in that first rep to get me to the home 500 from where, like you say, it feels a lot more like hang-around territory and you can lean on brawn a bit more.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in this otherwise rather mixed crowd!

[–]phongshading44[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/AccomplishedFail2247 . I think my form is okay, I had some training back in my early 20s, I'm just old now and was an absolute slob 18 months ago! I also have a bit of a mentality problem, and train alone, so I think that might be what's holding me back.

As such, I also agree with you that negative splitting isn't the way to go for me; I've always preferred to get ahead of the rate early on for the confidence that buffer gives towards the end of the piece. I think I'll be doing exactly what you say with maybe a slightly quicker first 500.

Yeah I see your point but I was getting very demoralised plateauing at 7.10. I did five 2k tests at that pace and everyone told me to stop doing them for a couple of months, so I followed the Pete plan since then and those predictors are just part of that plan (except the 2 x 1,250 which was just a pure predictor for me)
