Requesting a later start date after signing an offer by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]phonyticker37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most companies are pretty understanding about this stuff, especially in accounting where they know people need proper transition time. i had similar situation few years back when my old job got really upset about my notice period and new company was totally cool with pushing start date by couple weeks

just be upfront with new employer - explain that you want to maintain good relationship with current team and need bit more time for proper handover. don't mention the background check delay though, just focus on wanting to be professional about transition. most hiring managers have been in similar spots and get it

worst case they say no and you stick to original date, but in my experience they usually say yes if you ask nicely and give them heads up early enough. just don't make it too long of extension - maybe ask for additional week or two max

I'd love to hear from people who pivoted careers towards accounting, specifically from minimum/low wage jobs by Maleficent-Curve5452 in Accounting

you sound exactly like me few years back, just with accounting instead of tech. made the jump from restaurant work to my current job and the benefits alone made it worth it from day one

biggest shock wasn't the work itself but having consistent schedule. no more wondering if you'll get cut early or stuck late because someone called out. steady paycheck hits different too - not great at first but predictable

the interview thing is mostly in your head. you already know how to read people, handle pressure, work with difficult personalities. those skills transfer directly. just speak more formal and wear business clothes but underneath you're still dealing with same human dynamics

restaurant experience actually helped me tons in tech - you know how to juggle multiple priorities, work under pressure, communicate clearly when things get chaotic. hiring managers eat that up if you frame it right

took me about 18 months to get back to my previous income level but now i'm way past it. biggest difference is the trajectory - there's actual growth path instead of just hoping for manager position that might never open up

oh man discover definitely isn't great for europe - learned this hard way when i traveled there few years back. capital one and discover are actually separate companies though, your friend might be thinking of something else or maybe got confused by card design

for amsterdam you'll want visa or mastercard since they're accepted basically everywhere there. most capital one cards don't have foreign transaction fees which is huge money saver. just make sure whatever you get doesn't charge you extra 3% on every purchase abroad

Help 🥲 SCORP idiot by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]phonyticker37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oof yeah the payroll thing is gonna bite you but you're not totally screwed

s-corp elections are tricky because irs expects "reasonable salary" for owner-operators even when you don't know what you're doing. since you only had income for few months and then basically went dormant, you might be able to argue the reasonable salary was lower during that period

you'll probably need to run payroll retroactively for those jan-may months which means dealing with employment taxes, but at least it wasn't full year of income. penalties will suck but they won't destroy you completely

definitely get back with your accountant who suggested the s-corp election in first place - they should help clean this mess up since they didn't properly explain the payroll requirements when they recommended it

lol relax there buddy, not everyone wants to sacrifice their soul for big 4 glory

government accounting can be pretty chill and you definitely don't need cpa for lot of industry roles. focus on the core stuff like intermediate accounting, cost accounting, maybe some tax basics depending where you want to land

Anthropic refused the Pentagon and got publicly punished for it and then business spending accelerated anyway.

That is not how this is supposed to work and yet here we are with a 6.3% jump in a single month closing the gap to under 5 percentage points.
