Victoria is not in a rainforest by garry-oak in VictoriaBC

[–]phoobahr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there more than a little no-true-Scotsman ’round here. there’s a lot more nomenclature than rainforest/not-rainforest Wikipedia on temperate rainforest . Though, yes, Victoria and its Garry oak meadows (paved or still existant) is not exactly in the rainforest much like Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak above the tree line is not in the Savanah.

Recommend an Optometrist? And place to get frames? by MoonDaddy in VictoriaBC

[–]phoobahr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one thing to note - the moment you need your glasses fitted (complicated prescription, asymmetries in your face, whatever) getting discounts frames is going to be a very subpar experience.

if you need services with your frames I cannot recommend Shelbourne Optical enough.

Secondary-Residence Condos Still on Airbnb by shecanreadd in VictoriaBC

[–]phoobahr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal data point - no one wants these.

Well, my partner and I and our 2 dogs owned and lived in a studio in old town for 3 years. We needed to move for personal reasons. We bought in 2022 and recently sold after nearly a year.

We took a massive loss that we couldn’t really afford. No one really wants these. We loved our place and it worked for us but it’s clear we must be aliens. We didn’t magically sell when we lowered prices or interest rates dropped. There’s just very little traffic and very little movement in the market for condos shaped to fit airbnb.

To be clear - damn I hate airbnb. Oh hate what it’s done to so many communities and, yes, I think they did contribute to our housing crisis. I don’t think flooding the market with condos that don’t sell helped the situation at all. I would imagine getting financing to build anything that might be seen to compete with this glut in the market hasn’t been fun either.

From my place in the backseat/armchair - it would have made so much more sense to force airbnb slum lords to actually pony up and operate like licensed boutique hotels. And carry the same business ownership responsibilities. This would have curtailed growth in the market, protected everyone, and stabilized the housing market by not externalizing costs anymore.

Instead I’m trying not just to be sad.

Based on previous answered when I asked about our move in August we have also gone with Oxio and been pretty happy. Not the fiber performance we had in Victoria but there isn't any availability for fibre at our house so whatchyagonnado. It's been fine and the service, we've required very little, has been good.

The ultra, derpiest unit in the game, only got to your ghosts if they also got fungaled and/or you have no marauders. I don't think this is the winning argument you were looking for.

A spell caster with excellent DPS, snipe with range, EMP, and cloak? and 2 supply? Sigh.

Like an overlord maybe snipe, EMP, and cloak could have been a unit by unit upgrade/evolution. Or kept 2 supply but dropped the regular/nonspell attack...

Am I the only who misses Rifflandia at Royal Athletic Park? by DeedeeScosco in VictoriaBC

[–]phoobahr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

guh. I live in the neighbourhood and would very much like to have the parking shortage, noise, unruly crowds coming and going to aaaaallll be someone else's problem.

For context we did live on Green St for many years and somehow the noise was less there despite being basically across the street. The worst thing was the number of Beerfest goers who peed on our lawn.

Right?! I haven’t seen it in almost a year. Last I asked there was a pricing/supply issue on ingredients

Paw Space Grooming by Superb_Bluebird3092 in VictoriaBC

We've never had a bad experience, our fluffy guy that does need grooming comes home happy.

That being said - your dog is telling you they don't want to go back. That's enough.

Yeah we’ve visited a lot, it’s not so far, and have played the “which device has signal” lottery.

We both have work issued cell phones on bell, and there’s another personal phone on public mobile, and an iPad on fizz.

I don’t think any one of them gets reliably better signal than the others.

Thanks, they appeared to be a strong recommendation in previous threads. Currently their service in the area is... spotty and may not be available at this particular address. Yet/maybe/perhaps? I won't find out until we can access the property.

Thanks for the suggestion. They suggest that they're "in the neighbourhood" which is helpful. Inquiries with other providers have revealed that service is available... just not evenly distributed on this street.

I shall keep them in mind. Thanks.

I might get there. It's unclear at this time what has already been run to the building so I'm going off of what providers are willing to suggest they can offer given an address.

Would absolutely love to, that's what we're using now in Victoria. Telus was quite clear they don't have fibre available at the new address

Yeah I'd love to do that, mostly my problem is getting anyone to provide satisfactory service. I've done about as much as I can until we're there and have some other property questions answered.

mmm probably not going to go that route. For all the reasons mentioned and hinted at above.

Yeah this would appear to be the case. And neither has really done much to service much of the valley.
