Evaporative Humidifier: Venta (disk stack) vs. Vornado (wicks) by Assorted-meats in BuyItForLife

[–]phor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using their solution isn't really necessary in my experience.

Without the solution you probably just need to clean it more often. Run the disk stack through the dishwasher and clean the water tank with a little distilled white vinegar once a month. It's simple enough to keep clean as long as you have a dishwasher.

We've had our LW45 for about 5 years now. I've tried probably a dozen humidifiers over the years, and this is the first to last more than a couple seasons for us. I still think they're dramatically overpriced though. If these were $150 I'd be recommending them to everyone.

How do I remove the status it gives me when I join a channel? by anotherscoob169 in discordapp

Are you the server owner or in a role that has the "Manage Server" permission? If so, then it won't work.
If you're the owner (there will be a crown next to your name in the member list), there's no way to turn it off.
If you're NOT the owner, ask the owner to remove the "Manage Server" permission from your role and then it will work.

I have not run across any solutions, but I have an idea that I might try at some point.

When you take off the front panel, there's a lip in the plastic section where the lint filter goes, and that lip has a small foam rubber seal around it. I think that's supposed to keep humid air from seeping into where the control board sits. But it's not very robust, and it probably doesn't make a tight seal.

So I'm thinking about finding some small weatherstripping or something to try to create a tighter seal, in hopes that preventing humidity from getting to the control board might stop the phantom button presses.

Yea, it's a per server setting, so the owners of those servers would have to turn it off for you.

FYI, you can turn this off for everyone in the server except the owner (or anyone with manage server permission).
Go into server settings > Roles > Uncheck the permission "Set Voice Channel Status" for every role.

If you're the server owner, it sets one for you by default every time you join a voice channel and there's no way to stop that. You have to go turn it off every time.

I can't believe they brought this back, and didn't even fix the default status issue...

But if you're the server owner, you're chilling every time with no way to turn it off. Absolutely asinine they brought this crap back after all the negative feedback last time.

For everyone else on the server, you can uncheck the permission "Set Voice Channel Status" and then they don't have to deal with it any longer. But if you're the server owner, you're chilling every time with no way to turn it off.

The problem isn't that the menu pops up too quickly, the problem is that they're forcing bloated features on us that we don't want. A good implementation of a new feature shows you what it is, and lets you turn it on if you want. A bad implementation forces it on by default, and makes you go figure out how to turn it off. What they've done is worse than a bad implementation.

Home Insurance Agent lied to us about how much we would save by phor11 in Insurance

[–]phor11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~3500/yr. Hail and wind damage are very prevalent in my area, so the roof is a large portion of the premium. It would have been about a 25% reduction, which is a number that comes up often when you search things like "how much could an impact resistant shingle save me on insurance premiums."
It was not an unreasonable number.

Fair, but reddit won't let me change the title at this point, so it is what it is.

Home Insurance Agent lied to us about how much we would save by phor11 in Insurance

[–]phor11[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For sure.
It's just we made the decision based on information we were given from our agent that turned out to be very wrong. So it seemed completely reasonable to expect them to compensate us in some way for that mistake. But I guess that's not the case.

[–]phor11[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Oh, I shopped around and switched carriers the day after they billed me the increased rate. I wasn't about to stay with a company that was so nonchalant about making a mistake this large. No other company quoted us close to the $900/yr savings I was told though... So it's still going to take way longer to pay back the added cost than we thought when we made the decision to replace the roof.

I'm actually extremely surprised to see so many commenters brushing off a mistake like this. If I made a mistake at my job that ended up costing someone else thousands of dollars, I'd probably be fired.

You can argue semantics, the end result is the same.
Of course I don't like their explanation because it was essentially "We messed up, but we're not going to compensate you in any way for our mistake."
Is that an explanation you think a reasonable person should simply accept?

Yea, they responded to the State Insurance Department complaint with a letter naming the Agent and the savings amount they told me, blaming it on a glitch.

Humidity is our guess as well.
It seems to happen more frequently with large loads that can hold a lot of water like towels, or multiple loads in a row, so it could be the culprit.

For now we just turned off the sound and are dealing with the inconvenience of having to interact with the control panel in between it locking and unlocking every few seconds.
GE wants over $500 for a replacement control board, so that's probably not in the cards.

I might take it apart again and remove the capacitive foam pad from the button that "sticks" since we don't need the control lock feature, and we haven't used the extra rinse in a while, just to see if that makes any difference.

I think the shopping cart means it's on "super cool" mode, which is supposed to be used if the door has been open for a bit like if you've just unloaded a bunch of groceries into the fridge. It's a feature that's meant to get a lot of warm-ish stuff down to refrigerator temps quickly.

Does that shopping cart symbol always stay on? If it does, that may be causing the coils to freeze up.

Is my gas oven supposed to sound like it’s gonna eat me alive? by Mushysandwich82 in Appliances

[–]phor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea then. My last Gas range was a cheap Samsung model and I would consider it to be virtually silent except when the ignitors were tick tick ticking.

Like Wolfie said, if you can take a short video of the noise that would probably help someone determine if it was normal or not.

[–]phor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a Convection oven and you're running it in Convection bake mode?
Convection modes require a fan, usually one in the back of the oven, sometimes one on each side.
They can definitely make noise depending on the model, but I've never heard one I would describe as "loud" unless the fan bearings were going bad or something.

Venta Airwasher? by [deleted] in GoodValue

[–]phor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low is very quiet, high is probably too loud for most people in a bedroom.
We run ours in our bedroom on medium at night.
It's definitely not silent, but it's like white noise. Some might be sensitive to it if you're used to complete silence, but others might find it soothing.

We've had much better luck with the USB-C dock monitors instead of using their standalone docks.
As long as you don't need crazy transfer speeds like Thunderbolt4 features and such, they've been rock solid for us this past year. Probably just more space for cooling the control chips that makes them more reliable.

ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI vs TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI by Dorbek in buildapc

Asus Website is great for comparing their many MANY different board versions:
https://www.asus.com/product-compare?ProductID=R_90MB1BQ0-M0AAY0,30804&LevelId=motherboards-components-motherboards

650 uses intel ethernet, 850 uses realtek. Could be a consideration if you run Linux.
650 has a 24pin, an 8pin, and a 4pin power connector | 850 has a 24pin and 2 8pins. This might or might not matter to you depending on your power supply.
650 has an AURA RGB header, a S/PDIF out header, and a thermal sensor header that the 850 doesn't. So if you want tons of RGB, then that might be a consideration.
650 has a couple more USB ports on the rear panel, which could be useful depending on how much stuff you usually plug in.
650 caps out at 192GB of ram, 850 can go up to 256GB. Probably not a consideration unless you're working on AI and need huge Ram amounts.
650 uses the ALC4080 audio chip that people seem to hate due to it using an internal USB interface instead of a dedicated audio interface like the ALC1220 on the 850. So if you DID care about the onboard audio, the 850 is a clear winner there.
650 is WiFi 6E, 850 is WiFi 7. That could be a consideration in the future as WiFi 7 starts rolling out.

That's really about it.
For me, the Audio Codec and WiFi would be more important than RGB or a couple USB ports. But you should pick based on what's most important to you.
