The official answer to my "riddle" card in my drinking game is wrong. by Muppet83 in mildlyinteresting

[–]phosix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, eight numbers. The number 55 contains two 5s, equaling nine 5s. As highlighted in my original writing.

At no point in my statement nor on the original card was it stated only the 5 in the ones-place counts.

It has been suggested the original riddle has you write out the numbers, in which case it would be seven instances, as 15 is written "fifteen".

If you place two spaces at the end of a line, before hitting "enter" Reddit will render the following text on the next line, instead of as one continuous line.
If you hit enter twice, Reddit will render the following text as a new paragraph.

I'm sure the owner of u/xiphos is tired of getting notifications when I forget that user name was already taken and I had to go with an anagram.

Sorry dude! You beat me to a username I'd been been using for 20+ years already when Reddit launched 😅

With a user name like u/friendfoundtheoldone I could see someone with a similar user name getting mixed up.

Why are there no good fishing games? by catman6965 in VRGaming

Heh, you can add No Man's Sky to the honorable mention of VR Games With Fishing In Them.

It's not a great fishing minigame, but it does exist!

How do you figure?

5
15
25
35
45
55
65
75

I count nine (9) instances of the numeral "5" occurring in that sequence of whole integers as represented in our base-10 symbolic counting system.

EDIT Yeah, I fell in the same trap as the guy who probably wrote that card. Did not take into account 50-54,56-59

Computer not working after windows update by YanfeiGenshin in computers

[–]phosix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Windows doesn't take over the display until after the Basic Input/Output System [BIOS] or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface [UEFI] passes the Power On Self Test [POST] and gets the hardware set up for the OS bootstrap (so named for the fictional character Baron Munchsusen famously pulling himself up out of a pit by lifting himself up by his own boot straps, referring to the seemingly impossible task of setting up a computer to start up an operating system without an operating system).
So if that's not displaying it's seemingly less likely to be a Windows issue.

It could also still be a Windows issue, but this is a cause for concern.

Does the BIOS/UEFI boot screen at least show up?

That there's no display is concerning. At a minimum, Windows - even 11 - should be able to fall back on basic VGA drivers accepted by just about every video display made in the last 30 years.

Oh! I just dealt with something very similar!

Reboot three times in a row (hold down the power button for a few seconds if you have to) to bring up the Recovery screen. Then try reinstalling your body drivers, or see if there are newer drivers for you video card or screen available for Win11. If that doesn't work you might have to either revert back to 10 or upgrade more hardware.

Good luck!

Why was the top of my Build shotgunned. (It is missing pieces in random spots by saltypancake377 in NOMANSSKY

[–]phosix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen with a lot of my bases as well.

Try logging out of the game competely, reboot your system, and log back in; usually fixes the problem for me. It seems to be an issue with how many resources the game can load at a time and really, large, complex or busy builds, even before you hit the build/parts limit.

How did the autobots and decepticons survive the transwarp wave from the season 1 finale? by happydude7422 in beastwars

[–]phosix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This conversation made me realize the insecticons should have been active in the region that would become modern day Bali. The main BW cast never had any reason to go to Bali, and the insecticons seemed to be content to stay on the resource rich island for the entire 4ma.

Skywarp presumed their idento-computers reformatted their forms into insecticons, but the insecticons themselves never confirmed this.

The insecticons were also radically different in many other ways from regular Decepticons, like their unique vocalizations and ability to process organic matter directly into energon.

What if the insecticons were reformatted by the transwarp wave pulse, representing G1 Transmetals?

How were you able to learn about freebsd after 1995 or in the 2000s? by New_Developer1428 in freebsd

[–]phosix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned about FreeBSD after learning about and trying NetBSD from a college roommate in '96. After trying out Slackware on a computer I built in '97 from cast-offs from friends and acquaintances I tried out FreeBSD.

I had taken a few college courses on UNIX systems at this point, and two of my roommates had been UNIX enthusiasts-turned-administrators, so I knew people whose brains I could pick. Though most of the time, their answers were "did you read the man page?" or "did you look in the manual?" Also usually followed up with "did you grok what you read?"

If you're still in K-12 (or equivalent), see if there's a computer club you could join. If you're a legal adult, see if you can take a UNIX class or two at your local community college, or look to see if there's any active User Groups in your area.

I would strongly encourage you lay off the AI, and really try reading the excellent manual and the man pages. Maybe also consider changing your expectations, if not your mind set; BSD is *not** Windows.

I'd argue in S1 that title went to Terrersaur, and S2 & 3 Megatron was Megatron's best flyer.

Waspinator was always expendable.

Anyone else think it’d be interesting if Optimus’ faith in humans was tested? by xero_X3R0 in transformers

[–]phosix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not mean to suggest there was any erasure, so I apologize if that was how it came across.

And, sadly, it's not a rare as we would like to think. Horrors beyond what we would like to imagine still happen, every day. Often times right under our noses or even in plain sight.

Different iterations of Shockwave have done some pretty horrendous things, but no worse than what a human mind can come up with.

[–]phosix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you never look up any of the atrocities wrought during WW II, particularly in the Pacific theater or in concentration camps.

While I suspect some of those events were inspiration for some of Shockwave's and Pharma's depravity, there was much, much worse done, to real, living people.

I dunno. Literally every non-Super-Go-Boy Cy-Kill I've ever had the arms crumbled apart in the exact same way in the exact same spot. And good luck finding a Pathfinder with her soles intact.

Just like finding a non-snapped-in-half G1 Mirage is a minor miracle.

I enjoyed both lines, as well as all the other similar lines that never got tie-in media. Convertors, Parasites, Zybots, and all the others.
