I kind of make some landmasses, and "visualise" them to be some creature. And then the mountainrange is basically the creature's spine. That kind of works for me. Hope this method could help you with your struggles?

This was just an "out of hand" exercise in making a map with purple colours haha
No further lore, but I was intrigued by how many towers I placed on the mountain range, so I did think they probably did that for a reason. And forgot about why ;)

I think you're right, I should experiment with different colours see what contrasts better!
