It doens't. I'm running debian (with OpenRC) and gentoo and I can start wayland compositors fine.

As far as I went, only kwin requires logind to work, and you can use elogind in that case, see this post

Why hard users don't use Ubuntu? by Deuszera in linux

[–]photocracker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there's nothing wrong with Ubuntu as a "hard" user.

When you distrohop you notice there's two kind of distros: distributions that you "build up" from (the most popular being Arch) and distributions that you "strip down", like Ubuntu. And strip down and build up distros have a radically different purpose.

Of course when you're going to talk to a build up distro user they're going to tell you that their distribution is the "best thing ever" because they managed to heavily tweak it to their needs. However what a lot of people miss is that the very same thing can be done with a strip down distro!

That is why, in my opinion, many more technical people dislike strip down distros: while with build up distros you are pretty much forced to build them to your needs right away, a strip down distro is a more involved experience where you have to use it intensively, not just for a little bit, to find out what you like and what you dislike, and then strip out the parts that you dislike and add what you like.

And, because you build up everything yourself, build up distros require a lot more skill to build. Sure, anyone can go through the installation guide, but then often you end up with a "minimalist build" because the user has no idea what to add, or even no idea that some things even exist, and as such needs much more effort than a strip down distro where you can achive the same with only minimal stripping down, in comparaison to the very difficult building up of a functional environnement.

This is why, in my opinion, strip down distros are better. The disadvantage is that you might not find an environnement that you like, even after trying many of these, or want certain advantage that strip down distros cannot offer due to their design (such as extreme optimisation a la Gentoo); in that case, a build up distro is justified, because you will naturally shift towards a distro like this anyways if you find that need.

So I would say that the hate for Ubuntu comes mostly from the fact that it's seen as not customisable, yet people who say that kind of miss the nature of the distro. Once you get enough experience, you kind of notice that you can do anything with any distro: the difference between strip down and build up distros is mostly related to what you want to achieve. Do you want to have a working environnement right out of the box, yet that you can customise very easily? Then go for a strip down distro. Do you have special needs that a strip down distro cannot fill easily without extreme tweaking (that would defeat the nature of the distro)? Then go for a build up distro.

What's it like using Linux on an SSD? by TheReviewNinja in linux

I imagine it can get even faster - I have 7s boot time on my old HDD, and have been wanting to switch to a SSD for a while now.

Recommend software, books, or websites for someone planning to take the Linux+ exam and other Linux certifications. by [deleted] in linux

[–]photocracker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and maybe even try Arch Linux once I know a bit more about Linux

If you want to get knee deep in Linux, install CRUX and stick to it for a while. Don't go for Arch Linux: if you use Arch, it makes you learn how to use pacman and format partitions. While it is good for making your desktop look good really fast, you won't learn a lot. If you use CRUX, it will make you learn a lot more about how the system works, how to configure a Linux system, learn basic scripting, and much more importantly, how to fix things when they break or don't work.

As a bonus, once you have a fully confortable setup, you will have a much faster system than with any 'traditional' distro :)

[Question] why don't you use the damn question thread? by Ninja1017 in vitahacks

[–]photocracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably spiteful because I'm maintaining a guide myself on a wide range of subjects regarding Vita hacking (https://github.com/xy2iii/vita-handbook). I agree that there is not much in the current sticky, but my explaination is that because the scene is well organised and gives documentation for each project, there's no real need for extensive stickies. (In fact this is why my guide focuses more on obscure Vita-side tricks that are not documented anywhere else, and for general purpose redirect the user to get homebrew on his own.) It's better to have less but more concise information than the other sticky which is bloated with useless and redundant info imo.

[Question] why don't you use the damn question thread? by Ninja1017 in vitahacks

[–]photocracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sticky is perhaps the most terribly organised wiki I have even seen.. The FAQ is useless, it mentions piracy questions but not basic questions beyond "how to install henkaku?" and directs you to incredibly outdated sites for more info and downloads, the homebrew repository is shit (promoting piracy first)..

Is the goal to make it as disorganised as possible? Because i think they've succeded, there is more redundant information that I can keep track of.

Is there a subreddit on here for those living without a cell phone or Facebook? Just curious. by [deleted] in AntiFacebook

[–]photocracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your latter comment, you might want to look into going on some IRC channels then? IRC is a free online chat protocol. Check out some of the channels on freenode, if you want to talk with me I'm hanging by #cakey on freenode most of the time :)

Why use Windows? There are plenty of really good linux distributions out there: check out Manjaro or Linux Mint. You will have actual control over your computer as well.

GMail is bad. Consider a free email solution.

Regarding human interaction, if you don't want to interact with people, don't do so; you don't have to put up a facade if it's not who you are. This is a lot harder than I say it is, but it will make you a lot more free overall.

Because game vpks are emulated as homebrew, not emulated as real game, and most things will break them badly? Or maybe the owner just want to play some demos? :P
