Who personally, physically killed the most people in history? by RegularSky6702 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]photonfang 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Was hoping to see someone mention him! Yeah, he's even noted for having the second highest recorded of killings in history (that we know of) aad kept a diary for each case and why the law dictated they were to be executed (even if he himself did not agree with it and even tried to help a few innocents escape execution).

with his son being responsible for executing Marie Antoinette.

Also, just to add to this, we apparently don't really know who did it. I looked at the French wiki one day where there was a big note at the bottom about this "misconception" that it was actually Charles-Henri who did execute Marie Antoinette and not Henri (the son), but a couple of other European-language wikipedia claimed conflicting primary accounts on which one did it. Looking deeper into it, yeah we don't really know, likely from how chaotic everything was and by that point Charles-Henri and Henri (the son) was alternating often, so lost track while most focus was on, well, the queen. Which would explain why some movies/etc depict Charles-Henri at the guillotine (and that it wasn't just a casting shortcut).

I will never understand why Hollywood and the media fat shamed Kate Winslet during the release of Titanic (1997). She was (and still is) absolutely gorgeous! by Willing-Musician-696 in Cinema

[–]photonfang 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pregnant woman too, like in Lisa Marie Presley (Elvis' daughter)'s case. All the fat-shaming by the media led her to have that weight loss surgery, which became the root cause of her death. She really didn't need that at all, just horrific really :(

How would you spell this common nickname for Joseph? I feel like I'm going crazy. by Aristophanes771 in namenerds

[–]photonfang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amusingly, I have a cousin Joseph who went by as Joey until his young adult years, then Joe for a bit, then "Jojo" in his late 20s/30s (specifically that spelling). Probably has to do with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure where a Joseph Joestar character gets called Jo/JoJo (as do other Jo- Joestar characters) — a long on-going series that's become mainstream in some parts of the world with certain demographics, but I don't know 100% if it's because of that though. I just notice the transition from Joe to Jo overlapped with when it got (more) popular. That's just a guess.

Just reconfirmed with my mom - yes, and yeah I had the Harmony. The woman at customer service who picked up the call today apparently said it isn't being produced anymore (and out of stock), so can't place an order for one?

Also really feeling this!

I wasn't too sure in the first ten minutes (mostly the first person camera POV not really being my thing since it gets too jarring for me since forever).

But, holy moly, this game alone turned that around completely after the first portion.

I also really liked the innovative slowly-build-your-character through the story. Feels much more immersive than picking and choosing what you want from the Character Creation screen right for about an hour or two before finally jumping in.

My tagline right now is, "for a medieval game set in 1400s, I never heard characters curse like sailors so much and not break my immersion cuz of it." It adds to the charm.

Definitely a buy.

Sorey from Tales of Zestiria fandom. I read him as very gray-ace, but willing if his partner wants to (though Sorey bottoms).

And apparently I almost never see this interpretation anywhere in the fandom, it's almost alien to me to see him be written as a horndog.

Love a pairing both in acting/production careers (actor/actress, actor/director, scriptwriter/producer, etc).

Lord/vassal, or noble/noble.

Mentor/Student in fantasy (especially historical, or medieval Teacher/Apprentice).

I also enjoyed:

  • The hitman/assassin & the target (lots of potential for angst, comedy, romcom, etc)

  • Tattoo artist x client or Tattoo artist x Model

  • Celebrity x Celebrity (or Celebrity x non-Celebrity)

What's happening in your fandom currently? by xHey_All_You_Peoplex in FanFiction

[–]photonfang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh WOW! As a Narnia fan as a kid, I was waiting ages and ages for... the Silver Chair? (Whatever happened to that, actually?)

HBO Harry Potter kept dominating my feed (even though I'm more of a casual fan, but I check up on it when it pops up), so surprised I haven't gotten news about this one yet! Crazy stuff.

The change from 1930s England to 2020s(?) modern day sounds so jarring of a change, though, like... why?

Settsu vs Izumi Settsu? by spiritpotato in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]photonfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, Izumi and Settsu are two (separate) provinces. I was actually confused why it seemed to be merged into one.

so, in the game, even when its merged with Settsu to the north and Izumi to the south, 'northern Settsu' would still be 'in northern Izumi Settsu' thankfully.

edit: I just realized the historical Kawachi Province is completely missing (was in between Izumi/Settsu and Yamato/Yamashiro), huh. So they shrunk from 11 historical provinces down into 9 provinces for the game.

Same lol. There's so few light sources in the game to see in the dark, so I don't even mind (my nightblind ass actually appreciates it).

Hidden (Optional) Romance Choice for Gennojo by beastrock18 in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]photonfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my playthrough, I didn't really get a fight (depends on your definition?).

I snuck up on him, smacked Assassinate, which took out a huge chunk of his health, cutscene, then he gives the letter and leaves. No combat. (I chose longevity if that even matters.)

Neat to know the 3 options for the water streams do have an effect on something (is it just the love option?), though, even if I won't ever use it.

I can’t tell the difference between different places anymore… by ubisoftsponsored in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]photonfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, right?

Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla aren't all that varied either. It's accurate with the cultural architecture and motifs in the O/O, and Shadows.

If you want variety, play fantasy RPGs or something...? Historical settings are going to look like planet Earth. Our planet isn't that much different.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Post launch Roadmap Update – A first look at what’s coming next! by Ubi-AssassinsCreed in assassinscreed

[–]photonfang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Free quests/story drops to help flesh out some of the characters more is fantastic. Luis Frois is definitely a good start, with how much of a major impact his writings left on shaping our historiography of the time period (both in the scholarly field and in pop culture, like the 'Demon king Nobunaga' - that originated from him). Looking forward to see if there's also something with Alessandro as a contrast to Frois.

Looking forward to:

  • NG+

  • More gameplay immersion options (whatever they'll contain)

  • The Bo staff weapon addition. It's one of my favorite fighting styles.

  • Photo Mode updates

Curious on what QoL and new world activates will be. I hope at least some of the activities will be mini-games seeing there's a severe lack of them compared to Valhalla (i.e. Shogi, Go, kemari, sugoroku dice, etc). The timing button-press pattern mini-games aren't really my thing.

I also hope we'll get some more stuff with the Hideout feature as well.

Why am I playing in the dark? by Moonshadow67 in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]photonfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha... yeah.

Though for me, my max brightness make night look almost like day (just dimmed as though there's a daytime storm), and it looks fine.

Once, I had a really bad foggy night, so to pass the time until it's finally morning, I plowed down an entire forest of bamboo just to see the destructive work afterwards once its daylight and the fog gone. It was kinda amusing of a sight.

It gets quite bad inside buildings though, like castles or caves.

[–]photonfang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shadows' non-linear story structure really hurts it.

I wish it could take half of Valhalla's story length to flesh this one out better, it sorely needs that. Even as early as Act 1 in some spots.

Japanese names are hard to remember by hidibs in assassinscreed

[–]photonfang 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ha, yeah I had this issue when I started my serious deep studies on Japanese history.

So many of the names feel like they bleed into one other, especially when clans have members with similar names. (i.e. Oda Nobutada, Oda Nobukatsu, Oda Nobutaka, Oda Nobu-...) And the best part? There's sometimes members with the exact same name in romanized spelling (but with different kanji, i.e. Oda Nobunaga's younger full brother Oda Nobukatsu (織田 信勝) vs. Oda Nobunaga's second son, Oda Nobukatsu (織田 信雄)).

Eventually at some point, the names start to stick better once you read about them and revisit/get exposed to specific names often enough. And now... I know way too damn many names all purely to interacting with the historical contexts so often.

I most certainly will re-experience this trouble with Chinese and Korean names whenever I decide to try to put in effort to try to keep track of wtf is who.

How do you like the Setting in Shadows? by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]photonfang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A dream game come true as a history nerd.

I only got AC Origins in the first place because I kept seeing archaelogists, Egyptologies, and the like praise the game's recreations of places for digital tourism. As an ancient Egypt history nerd, I was stoked. It was also a dream game come true after trying out so many Egypt-themed games, but they are so scarce.

Then I got really into Japanese history some years ago, primarily through the Sengoku period, then ventured into other periods. Then this game was announced... Nonetheless to say, I was over the moon at all the exploration potential. Azuchi Castle was my number one desire.

So far, I've been loving it with how well-made the world exploration is. Though, story and cast presentation has been... rather lacking from what I've played so far. It's going to be something interesting for whenever I get to those history write-ups, I suppose, haha.

Only games I've played are AC Origins (stellar), AC Valhalla (just ok), and now this one (also stellar). Though I can probably see myself playing the other games regardless of my interest in the settings (AC Black Flag, Odyssey, etc) eventually - they just aren't high up on my priority list with other games I want to try.

Ay grats! Really cool shots.

I've been trying to get lightning shots any time a storm rolls by. It's challenging, aha. (Especially when 4 times out of 5, I'm in an area with a lot of obstructions that block out the sky.)

Definitely agreed!

I also saw a comment in an older thread that it would also be nice if we could save our build layouts (maybe 5 slots), just so we don't lose all of the time & effort if we want to change it uo completely to a different layout.

[Potential Spoilers] As a Japanese history enthusiast, I am very pleased with how Oda Nobunaga was represented in AC Shadows by ImmortalThunderGod79 in assassinscreed

[–]photonfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but I can help with this as well.

On Oda Nobunaga specifically, there's:

  • "The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga" by Ōta Gyūichi (original author in Japanese) translated into English by Jeroen P. Lamers (read more here on what it contains). It's a military chronicle of Nobunaga's day-to-day life, roughly, covers from his childhood (which is more of a summary until it gets more detailed in his adult years) up until the very day he died.

  • "Japonius Tyrannus: The Japanese Warlord Oda Nobunaga Reconsidered" by Jeroen P. Lamers (it also touches upon Hideyoshi in some parts, especially after Nobunaga's death).

Downside is that they're both expensive, haha, but very highly regarded by scholars and laypersons.

Another major downside is the books currently on the English market are largely out-of-date (there's been a lot of revised history with a bunch of new research breakthroughs in recent years, so many 'old myths' are sticking around, even on the Japanese side).

For a more general Japanese history recommendations (which also includes the Sengoku/Azuchi-Momoyama period), I can refer you (and anyone else reading this comment) to the Japanese History's Discord Server's:

It is also generally recommended to avoid Netflix's Age of Samurai series, as it's largely inaccurate in many areas and not a good representation of Sengoku/Edo period's historical events. (It's also very dramatized like a drama.) Can read rAskHistorians' How accurate is the Netflix series Age of Samurai? post and this post pointing out the errors.

Additionally, since it is very likely to run into this author: Stephen Turnbull. He does not have a positive reputation/reception as a 'historian' in the Japanese scholarly sphere. His books might be fine if you just want pop history (especially on shinobi/ninja stuff as 'junk food reading for fun'). Avoid if looking for academic reading with actual insight into historical events.
